You can grab this Weekly (without doing any of the Azerothian Archives introduction quests) from Eadweard Dalyngrigge in two locations, or just from your adventure journal:

Every hour on the half-hour, the public event "The Big Dig: Traitor's Rest" will start in the Traitor's Rest area of the Azure Span and last for up to 12 minutes. You can mouseover the event's horn icon on the map to check for its next uptime or potential rewards for your next participation.
The only thing needed to complete The Big Dig: Traitor's Rest is a Doomshadow defeat!
We'll only get the 5000x Mysterious Fragments for the first completion of this Weekly per account! (it's supposed to flag hidden quest ). Other characters will see Dragon Isles Supplies instead.

As for the Community Feast, players need to wait near an NPC (Eadweard Dalyngrigge) to receive solo tasks in the area and when we complete them, we'll add pages to the event's progress bar. (Obviously nothing is exactly solo in heavily crowded events, the few tasks handed out to players AND digging for exposed objects are shared when it comes to their progress)
For every time we fill the bar (1000 pages, repeatable during one event), every player in Traitor's Rest will be rewarded with a tome or appendix (shown on the bar) of different rarities with different amounts of Azerothian Archives reputation and Mysterious Fragments. (e.g. Immaculate Tome, Preserved Djaradin Tome, Meticulous Archivist's Appendix)
You will get Mysterious Fragments on literally everything in the event (e.g. task & dig completions, opening container items, etc.) so I will no longer mention them.
Each task completed is worth 50 pages, but you'll see bonus pages based on the number of players in the area: 270 when solo, 120 with two players, 70 with 3 players, 45 with 4 players (never had more players around on PTR to see more values, or too many on Retail to see when the bonus stops). This scaling is there to make sure that a solo player doing 3 tasks (960) will approximately see similar numbers of pages as 2 players doing 3 tasks each (1020), 3 players (1080), or 4 players (1140).
While waiting for your next task, you can dig for exposed objects around Eadweard's tent for a smaller number of pages (especially nice when 3 tasks will leave solo players with 40 pages left to fill the bar), but be prepared to fight some hostile spirits (also worth some pages). These dirt piles are all close enough to Eadweard to not worry about missing your next task.
After 9 minutes the tasks will stop (while the exposed objects will be there to dig for another 3 minutes), BUT...
All our activities around the bones of the two-headed dragon disturbed the Traitor's Rest spirit's peace and we'll see a short spawn event and can then defeat Doomshadow for more rewards (AFAIK no limit on that, so you could repeat that every hour for 50 rep, and a chance on cosmetics, a mount, etc.)
When Doomshadow is defeated OR the 12-minute event timer is over, another 1000 pages will be added to the bar, so everyone will get another tome/appendix. This also means that everyone who's in Traitor's Rest when the event ends will receive at least one tome/appendix even when no one was actively adding pages.
(Probably no longer intended or bugged, players (me included) are reporting they didn't get anything but Doomshadow's loot)
Even if you don't care about the rewards of this Weekly, as an achievement hunter or battle pet collector you should complete it 6x because every completion will give 17% on Finally At Rest (incl. Hap'he). This achievement is supposed to take a character 6 weeks (with a new page added to Eadweards journal every week), but right now the Weekly completion of any character will add to that.

Surprisingly you can mount up while "channeling" some activities as long as you don't move! (e.g. ~~digging for exposed objects,~~ releasing otters, etc.). Just try it out on different things, it can save you some seconds for the cast time. Unfortunately the Devs felt the need to add a really large no-mount-bubble around Eadweard 2024, February 13 so this is no longer working for digging near the NPC.
Similar to the Community Feast you can dismiss your actual task when you don't like/understand one or it feels bugged (on PTR excavating with the fire totem often was). Fly out of the Traitor's Rest area until the event timer disappears and then return to Eadweard Dalyngrigge to get a new one.
For some tasks you have to grab hats from a crate and throw them on creatures. The range of that spell is really large, so you can try to stand near the crate and find your targets without any/a lot of movement.
When the 9 minutes for tasks are over and your bar is only missing a few (let's say up to 40) pages for the next completion, you could fill that by digging for 3-4x more exposed objects, grab the actual reward~~, and another one for the 1000 pages for killing the final boss or event being over~~.
(I don't recommend that when you wanna go for the rewards of a Doomshadow kill or the Weekly completion, other players might kill it while you dig, or you could run out of time when you have to kill it almost alone~~, but you'll get another 1000 pages anyways~~)

You have to dismount to see the Gain Clue Extra Action Button near Clue Seekers for the "Collect Research Clues" task with Hap'he.

The community event is super broken and doesn't give out the tasks so you may not be able to get past the 1k pages for the first reward.

Bugged task - Bonecleaver Cleared - only 4 spawn. Screenshot attached (uploaded to wowhead, but not added yet by wowhead). I did fly and walk around the area to confirm that it was not just a display bug, only 4 bonecleaver spawned.

Quest can be completed in raid group, only requirement is to tag the boss at the end.

Side Note: Cosmetic rewards come from tomes completed during the event, so don't just afk till the boss appears or the undead guy gives you a task, interact with the buried artifacts around the tent with percent bars above them to complete more tomes. Every player counts in this timed event.

I was laggy for a short time when the boss spawned, and it was killed in around half a second I'd say. I literally didn't even see the boss show up, when it was on my screen it was already dead. Kind of ridiculous how squishy they made it since you have to tag it to finish the event/quest.

Completed the Big Dig: Traitor’s Rest on my main and got the 5000 mysterious fragments. I did next hour on an alt, and while the event tooltip showed they would receive a once-weekly 5000 Mysterious Fragments, too, they did not, once I completed it. Those two characters no longer show the weekly reward on the tooltip, but my other alts do, making me assume all characters that complete a Big Dig will receive the 5000, once, each week. Did I run into a bug? What is intended?

dont stand in the blue quest circle because DS doesnt show up there. It's back beyond a big log or bone or something and it's over fast. because of the commotion its about impossible to tag.

WHen you dig around the basecamp, and there are lots of people there, it can be hard to click on the stones on the ground. A better way is to right-click the blue progress bar! It will start Excavating as long as you are near the dig area. this will save you a lot of stress and time!

They keep saying that the final boss drops 1000 pages and will thus complete whatever book you're working on, but I'm not seeing that happening. Anyone else?

Has been bugging out on and off where I don't get the tomes when you complete the bar during the event.

Edit: Seems to happen when I'm there at the start of the event (not always though). I've found logging out and back in after it starts gets me the tomes as it should do.

Doomshadow arrives about 10 minutes after the event begins (event begins, as stated before, every hour on the half hour so 6:30, 7:30 etc.). There will be a couple of tasks with timers that come up at the beginning of the event, then at the end of the second timer (about 10 min after the start of the event) Doomshadow flies in and arrives a little bit East of the quest giver's, Eadweard, four-post awning (if you look back at Eadweard/four-post awning, you will see a dragon skull in between you and the four-post awning; looking eastward you will see two NPCs using pick axes around a gray boulder on the ground, the ground in between the dragon skull and gray boulder is dark brown).

If you stand there the whole time you will still gain rewards. This was my third attempt when I wised up as I did all the tasks the first two times, never saw Doomshadow spawn because I was doing the tasks and standing next to Eadweard, the quest giver (which is what the instructions state to do) so this time I was sure to get the mob (I found the corpse after the second attempt so knew where to stand the third time).

Pretty much the opposite of how the current Community Feasts work. In the CF you await Solo Orders while being able to tag in on some 'group' orders such as tenderizing meat, harvesting meat from corpse etc - where as the Digs are group based projects for the most part as you will join others digging up the small patches of ground here and there around the tent; if youre lucky, you'll have your name called out by Edwaerd and he'll set you on a Solo task that will have you tending to objectives elsewhere in the dig site.

Unfortunately, i've found Doomshadow spawning to be a bit hit or miss; ive had a few spawns where you'll stand around for a few moments as the swirls spawn and move etc and ive had time where he'll pop nigh on immediately - in either case, he does tend to die quite quickly; presumably because the scaling doesnt kick in all that quickly when attacked by multiple players, so he can go down 'too quick' due to that.

Is worth noting that you can continue to finish up any and all digs while Doomshadow is spawning, but due to the hit/miss situation, probably best to leg it over to his spawn and be ready to tag him.
Also worth noting that you get a small handful of 'fragments' each time you complete a dig to 100%, so try to 'tag' as many as you can to 100% before moving off to another one

Ive also found he doesnt fill up the bar for your current tome like someone else mentioned in anther comment.

There is one HUUUGE problem with this new event:
People who are freeloaders and AFK the whole thing.
Blizzard made it so the event scales with the amount of people in the area.
Now, the more people are AFK, the worse it gets, the more difficult it is to finish even one tome.

If you're having trouble digging due to crowded dig spots, use your interact key (default # if not remapped) or D-pad right if on a controller, as soon as you see the interact icon over the dig spot. Easy.

Excavate around Eadweard Dalyngrigge within the yellow circle to get pages until you are given a task. DO NOT do tasks that aren't assigned to you. You will not get any pages for it and you may make it harder for someone else who has that task to complete it. Keep excavating to get as many tomes as possible (right click on the blue bar if dirt is crowded). You may only get 2-3 tasks. So keep digging.

It doesn't seem like there's any advantage of doing "Alt rotations" for this event as only the first big dig of the week give Mysterious Fragment, doing it on an alt after that only rewards rep.
For the event itself, I've been able to get 500-1000 Mysterious Fragment from each dig, no matter if I did it on an alt or continued doing it on the same character. It seems like you can also loot Doomshadow each time on the same character.

I was still on the quest Lab Partners with a Squirrel when I participated in my first Big Dig. I would get the Gain Clue extra action icon pop up occasionally, but nothing happened when I used it. This might be a bug?

You don't have to actually do anything as long as someone else is doing the quests; you can just hover there on your flying mount while the rewards pile into your inventory.

Few times now where it just phases me out when the boss spawns and suddenly its just dead and everyone gone... Great design.

As people seem to crowd the dig nodes, to make this easier I created a target Macro for the dig piles, slot this into your action bar, use it and simply press F to start digging.

Boneclover cleanup task is impossible. 6 needs to be cleaned up and only 2 exists. Sometimes I see another one repop after clearing the first 2, but it's not working properly.
If you get this task you're done for the event. I've submitted a bugreport - but maybe you guys know some workaround.

If any tasks are bugged for you, fly out of the Traitor's Rest mini-zone and return. The task should reset.

This event sucks. I noticed that like me, most players will just come to the event, take the quest, not know that they have to sit and wait for the event to start, and then just fly off because they are expecting the NPC to give them something to do but they're not. This could be better explained.

Don't get stuck in aggro... Everyone killed the dragon so fast that I didn't even get credit despite spending the last 15 minutes contributing to this dig. Now I have to wait an hour; this time, I'll just stay at the dragon spawn... Actual cancer.

...There are literally dragons everywhere. They are all over the place. I can step outside and mount one of any of the fifteen I have. I have one walking next to me right now. I can summon any of 20 different pet dragons. Have you ever left this room?

The boss scales with the number of people at the event. For some reason I was the only one there at 1530 on a Thursday. Easily solo'd as a 465 human rogue. I didn't even have to use any heals and was still over 90% health at the end. I also got an extra 270 pages for each task completed before the boss.
