Edit: I don't think there is any urgency to reach Gold, you just need to finish.

How to avoid the disconnects

During this quest it's extremely probable that you will get disconnected, this happens because of a cheating protection which should have been disabled/patched for this event. While it is possible to complete the race just soaring without blinking, it's extremely difficult to obtain gold.

tl;dr
Blink moving horizontally and not when changing zone area.

The game client controls the movement of your character, and every several frames (not every one) syncs with the server. Based on the direction and speed of your character the server has a range of possible locations you can be in the next sync.
The blink ability executes horizontally, no matter if you're previously moving up or down. If you're moving up or down the server expects to be higher or lower in the next sync but actually you appear at a different height and way ahead. The distance where you are is too far away from what the server accepts as normal so assumes you are cheating and kicks you.
A similar situation happens when you zone in a different subzone. Suramar has several layers for phasing and although seamless for the players when moving normally, you're actually entering a new instance. When you enter this subzone but blink thought it, you'll appear quite far away from its border, the server expects you to enter near the border and again assumes you are cheating.
So, in summary, try to blink as horizonal as possible and avoid doing it in some key points you will notice when changing zone name and you would probably do it in a handful of tries.

Makes sense that when you enter and leave the Suramar area and using blink at that point that you get a disconnect. Try NOT to use blink while "changing zone". Good luck getting gold on this race :D

GOLD is possible w/ disconnection issues (submitted screenshot for proof) When you start 5..4..3..2.. (hit the #2 button when the countdown hits 1 so your boost is already starting when you jump off the ledge) 1... You CAN'T fly upwards with blink. Only active #2 will help you climb. So , try to use blink only when traveling horizontal. I don't use BLINK until after the 4th or 5th ring (right before the 1st whirlwind). Once you hit the whirlwind boost, there is no point in hitting any buttons. Take advantage of the whirlwind boost. After, I hit the BLINK once, then wait 1 second and hit BLINK again bypassing the tornado. AVOID all tornados. You will need to hit #2 to make the uphill climb. If you have 1 vigor left and you are able to hit #3 reset DO IT. too many times I run out of vigor and can't reset. GAME OVER!. As long as you see a trail of stars, you will be able to do steep climbs. the long stretches of space i hit BLINK twice otherwise just activate #2 as often as possible. I think I had to reset all the vigor 3 times. after death a bunch of 109s, I hit 2 silvers, and then finally Gold 99.83. I think a lot was luck. I disconnected about 15 times. Good luck
