Talk to the three highlighted dredgers nearby -- Dirk, Gil, and Purps. Then return to Rendel and choose a pigment.

Follow-up quest is Making a Smarter Dredger.

Tip: Before you start this quest chain, visit Ta'tru at the Night Market, south of the Wanecrypt Hill flight point, and buy Kaja'Extreme for a later step.

You have an option to select Green like Rendle after inspecting the other 3 variants. So you have a total of 4 variants available.

Other than just appearance, is there really any differences between the four colors? Especially differences that might affect the use of the dredger as butler for the Ember Court? Color is obvious, but I am wondering if there might also be performance differences... Dirk acted bold, Gil acted sad/depressed, and Purp seemed a little dim-witted but somewhat arrogant. Do these personalities carry over to the butler when you choose a color?

The quest text suggests that it's possible to re-color your dredger, but I haven't found a way to do it yet. Muck dye re-colors their armor, not their skin. The list of dredger cosmetic options (under the achievement "Dredger Style") doesn't seem to include any options for skin re-coloring. It may have been an intended feature that never made it into the live game.

Is there a prerequisite quest to activate this quest series from Rendle? Although Venthyr now, I was originally Night Fae at the start of the expansion. Unsure if that has anything to do with it or not.

I chose purple, he came out of the muck purple, and when I learned him as a pet and summoned him, he was suddenly blue.

EDIT: After I named him, he turned back to being purple.

Yeah, this here muck pool's got everythin' we need to make your dredger butler. We'll make this one special just for you. Made to specifications, as the fangs say. First up, you gotta choose its color. Us dredgers comes in all kind of different shades of muck. Take a peek at some me fellow dredgers and let me know what color we should dredge up for your butler. We can recolor a dredger after-the-fact, but it ain't pleasant. <Rendle shudders at the thought.>
