Is any pre-quests necessary to start this quest and start building my garrison?
Or can I just get a warlock to summon me, and start building the garrison as soon as WoD hits live?

If you get stuck on the cinematic - do not cancel the quest in hopes of repeating it. It will NOT spawn again. And the interaction with Khadgar will not work. You will be stuck without any way to get to Frostfire Ridge.

Who removed my edit? Is JC really a swear, has zam gone even more mad?

Anyway, there's a workaround without waiting for Support's mercy.

1. Use Support's Unstuck\teleport to graveyard function
2. If it doesn't work, alt-f4, even if it takes you to queue.
3. If unstuck got you to the graveyard and out of the cinematic lock, you have two options, I tried only one: I went back to the ship, talked to Khadgar, re-initiated the cinematic, it continued to the loading screen, quest was auto picked up. Otherwise you can try the theoretically existing portal in Org for those, who finished Assault on the Dark Portal.
4. If it doesn't work, as I've heard from another ghost ship unfortunate person... well, sorry, but worked for me.

This quest seems to be a bit buggy and I wasn't the only one that crashed during the cinematic you must watch at the start of this quest. In order to get to Frostwolves you have to complete the viewing but unfortunately I crashed.

I logged back into WoW and I was stuck. The road to Frostwolves and quest completion was blocked and could not figure out how to restart the cinematic. I thought abandoning the quest would pop up an exclamation point so I could restart the quest but that did not work.

Luckily someone in chat clued me in (just had the same issue) and the solution work. Go back to Khadhar (he's standing with the entire gang behind that big pink sparkling glowing wall) and click on him again. He'll talk to you and restart the cinematic and the quest.

Second time was the charm!

It bugged out on me a bit there was a ? on my mini map but no npc. I just walked up the hill and rode to the next part, the npc appeared and was able to turn in.

I had close to the same bug, the difference was that i saw the full cinematic and was in Frostfire Ridge already. I saw a yellow question mark at the bottom of the hill but no one was there to turn it in to. The fix was to continue with the quests that were there and available. You will run up the hill with thrall and the others and eventually you will be able to turn in the quest. If you get to the point where you plant your flag as part of the quest and you have not been able to turn it in then something else is wrong. But if you got that far it may not matter anyways, you will just be out of a quest.

This bugged out on me, showing the cinematic, but not transporting me to Frostfire Ridge.

The solution? Talk to Khadgar again.

If like me you accepted A Song of Frost and Fire from Farseer Drek'Thar before turning in The Home of the Frostwolves, don't fear. You haven't messed the chain up.

Simply go up the hill, hand in A Song of Frost and Fire and pick up the next quest (Verick's Vindicators) from Durotan. Then go up the mountain and follow the road along until you reach the clearing at 46.48, 66.54. After this, the quest givers are over in the camp at 48.63, 65.25.

Since i changed server and faction when i went thru the portal in Orgrimmar to the Blasted Lands it started the the pre quests over. However you don't do all the beginning quest but start with Khadgar after the bridge he destroys originally. You do all the remaining quests to the boat that takes you to Frostfire Ridge(Horde). However since you already have a garrison you cant complete the quest given on the boat. Delete and go to your garrison.

Pick up The Home of the Frostwolves from Archmage Khadgar, after completing The Home Stretch.

1. The Home of the Frostwolves - (Video)
• After arriving in Frostfire Ridge, following the Tanaan Jungle (level 90) quests, turn in this quest to Farseer Drek'Thar at coords 40.8, 67.0.

2. A Song of Frost and Fire - (Video)
• Accept A Song of Frost and Fire from Farseer Drek'Thar.
• Follow Farseer Drek'Thar to coords 41.8, 69.6 and turn in the quest to Durotan.

3. Of Wolves and Warriors - (Video)
• Accept Of Wolves and Warriors from Durotan at coords 41.8, 69.6.
• Follow Durotan to coords 48.8, 65.2.
• Turn in this quest to Thrall at coords 48.6, 65.2.

4. For the Horde! - (Video)
• Accept the quest, For the Horde!, from Thrall at coords 48.6, 65.2.
• Click the Horde Banner at coords 48.7, 64.9
• After Gazlowe comes through the portal, you can turn in this quest to him at coords 48.8, 64.9.

5. Back to Work - (Video)
• Accept Back to Work and A Gronnling Problem from Gazlowe at 48.8, 64.9.
• Click 6 Tree Marking flags in Frostwall.

A Gronnling Problem
• Kill 8 Frostfire Gronnling while you mark trees in the area.
• Turn in Back to Work and A Gronnling Problem to Gazlowe at coords 48.8, 64.9.

6. The Den of Skog - (Video)
• Accept The Den of Skog from Gazlowe at 48.8, 64.9.
• Travel south to coords 48.4, 70.0.
• Kill Skog.
• Travel north to coords 48.8, 64.9 and turn in the quest to Gazlowe.

7. Establish Your Garrison - (Video)
• Accept Establish Your Garrison from Gazlowe at 48.8, 64.9.
• Travel southwest to coords 46.9, 66.3 and click on the Master Surveyor.
• After the cut-scene, travel east into your garrison, to coords 42.0, 55.0, and turn in the quest to Gazlowe.

8. We Require More Resources - (Video)
• Accept the quests, We Require More Resources, and What We Got, What We Need from Gazlowe at 42.0, 55.0., as well as The Ogron Live? from Rokhan at coords 45.6, 43.2.
• Pick up the Garrison Cache at coords 54.5, 52.2.

What We Got
• Travel east to coords 41.2, 50.4 and speak with Skaggit, telling him to "Get the peons back to work."
• Travel north to coords 49.0, 17.0.
• Speak with Senior Peon II and tell him, "Gazlowe needs you."

What We Need
• Travel east to a cave at coords 40.3, 60.3.
• Follow the path down to coords 41.8, 59.0, and pick up 10 Drudgeboat Salvage from the ground that you come across, also by killing/looting Pack Boar.

The Ogron Live?
• Defeat Groog, located at 41.8, 59.0 and exit the cave.
• Travel back to your garrison and turn in the quest to Rokhan, at coords 45.6, 43.2.
• Turn in the quests, We Require More Resources, What We Got, What We Need to Gazlowe at 42.0, 55.0.

9. Build Your Barracks - (Video)
• Accept Build Your Barracks from Gazlowe at 42.0, 55.0.
• Travel west to coords 59.6, 46.9 and pick up Garrison Blueprint: Barracks.
• Right click the blueprints, in your inventory.
• Go to coords 52.5, 53.1 and click on Architect Table, and click & drag the Barracks to the large empty plot (see video if you are unsure what I mean).
• Follow Gazlowe to coords 57.6, 47.8.
• Click Finalize Garrison Plot.
• Turn in this quest to Gazlowe, who is standing next to you (in front of the newly constructed Barracks).

10. We Need An Army - (Video)
• Accept the quest, We Need An Army, from Gazlowe.
• Travel to your Garrison's Town Hall, and turn in the quest to Warmaster Zog.

Winds of Change
• Accept Winds of Change from Warmaster Zog at coords 40.0, 54.4 (your garrison Town Hall).
• Exit your garrison, and travel northeast to a cave at coords 56.7, 62.6.
• Click on Olin Umberhide, located inside the cave.
• Exit the cave, travel back to your garrison Town Hall, and turn in the quest to Warmaster Zog.

11. Mission Probable - (Video)
• Accept Mission Probable from Warmaster Zog, in your garrison Town Hall.
• Click on the Command Table.
• After you click Next a few times in your Garrisons Mission window that pops up when you click the table, click on the mission Gronnlings Abound and click "Start Mission" (located at the bottom center of the Garrison Mission window.
• Turn the quest in to Warmaster Zog.

Those of you wondering why this quest doesn't exist on your leveled character, this is because the quest is for the now defunct lvl 90 boost version of events. Apparently a leveled character does not have a version of this quest

This quest seems to be bugged in patch 9.0.1 (Shadowlands Pre Patch)

If you are trying to quest through Draenor with a character that has already unlocked the garrison it seems that Drek'Thar does not appear at the docks when you first arrive at your garrison, can anyone confirm this bug with me?

If you are trying to do this quest on a character that already has a garrison the only work around I have found is to party sync with a character that has just stepped through the dark portal. Promote them to party lead. Pick up the first quest and then party sync. Then visit the party leaders garrison. Drek'thar will be at the top of the trail where the garrison would go.

How to obtain this hearthstone fast as a toon (must be lvl 59 or lower):

Get to Chromie and choose the Warlords of Draenor timeline.
Accept the auto-added Warlords of Draenor: The Dark Portal quest and head to Vanguard Battlemage who teleport us to the Blasted Lands.
After teleportation, simply delete the Warlords of Draenor: The Dark Portal quest and casually walk into the Dark Portal. Thus we completely skip all the scenario of the battle for Tanaan Jungle.
Take the quest The Home of the Frostwolves from Farseer Drek'Thar nearby. Proceed to the questchain and the hearthstone will be ours in a couple of minutes.

If our character is lvl 60 or higher, then we should teleport to the Warspear from the Portal Room of Orgrimmar and fly to the place of our future Garrison in order to take the quest that starts the Garrison questchain. Again, proceed to the questchain and the hearthstone will be ours in a couple of minutes: The Home of the Frostwolves from Farseer Drek'Thar in /way 40.8 67.0 Frostfire Ridge.
