Very easy quest. After accepting the quest, talk to the vortex again and he will turn you into a cyclone and swap out your skill bar. You will automatically fly up to the boss and, after defeating him, will be automatically flown back down. In battle, throw the DoT spell on him (#2) and then hit on refresh, optherwise spamming the tiny damage spell (#1). Damage text will scroll when you have the Lordly Immolation on you and just immediately cleanse it with #3. As long as you keep it cleansed (comes every 15 seconds or so) you will have no problems.

Having a problem doing this today, tried the quest 3 times. Magmathar dies but I get no quest credit, not in a raid / group of any kind.

Im wondering if it has bugged out with one of the hotfix patches.. Anyone else had trouble with it now or the last couple of days?

I had the same problem, after trying it a couple times I think I narrowed it down to the quest being bugged so that if the periodic damage from Vortex Vengeance kills him you are not properly credited for the kill.

My final time, I slowly worked him to death with Sky Lightning after weakening him enough with Vortex Vengeance and was properly credited.

He has to be killed with Extinguish Flames spell not Sky Lightning..

I had the exact opposite happen. Killed him five times with Sky Lightning with no DOT on him. Then I tried letting the DOT kill him and got credit. If it's bugged for you, might want to try it both ways.

First 3 times...failed. Last time I tried a couple things:

- Waited until positioned in front of Lord Magmathar
- Let the DoT kill him

Then I got credit..

It could also be the fact that people are killing him too fast. When people are only spamming 1 to get credit or if your just letting the DoT kill him its both adding more time.

Tried a number of times using the suggestions above, then decided to run through the checklist of things that would be suggested to me should I submit a ticket: first on the list - disable addons. Logged back in, used the lightning bolt and dot just as I had on my first attempt and it worked first time. I would suggest disabling ALL your addons if you're having trouble with getting credit for this quest. Good luck :)

It was glitched for me too. I did the suggestions of dropping the quest and retaking it, the not using the DOT spell, but none of them seemed to help. I just kept trying. On the sixth (possibly seventh) try it finally just decided to work. I have no idea what the cause was. I guess persistence just pays off.?

Still bugged as of 10-23-11. Ill try with the lighting finish, if not, will put in a ticket. (4th try)

UPDATE: Cleared. yes, the lighting has to be used more than the DoT. Still, it's bugged.

Still bugged on 11-15-2011. Spammed all three buttons till he was near death. Then let the Dot "Vortex Vengeance" tick away at the end, and got the credit.

did this today, twice in a row had the Vortex Vengeance on the mob and twice I didn't get credited with the kill so the quest didn't get completed.

third time I used Vortex Vengeance to get him to roughly 700 health then purely used the lightning bolts, killed him and lo behold quest got credited as completed.

Still the same glitch in this quest as of yesterday. If you kill him with Vortex Vengance, you don't get credit for the kill, and have to go back and do it again.

I did what Osknapp said after failing this quest several times and it worked like a charm!
I think the key is to make sure the Sky Lightning kills him in the end.

I followed the instructions of this post, using only the lightning to kill - and he drops to 1% and slides down the face of the mountain while I get sent home.

It's still bugged, and from the sound of it, it's worse than before. Cannot complete this quest.

First tried using both Sky Lightning and Vortex Vengence: No kill credit.
Next tried using only Sky Lightning as final kill strike, no DoT: No kill credit.
Tried using only Sky Lightning throughout the fight: no kill credit.
Finally tried using only Vortex Vengence throughout the fight: Kill Credit! Yay!

One day before MoP and this quest is still bugged. It probably will not be fixed any time soon.

But, no credit for kill first time around. Then, I flew up and just killed him. Still no credit.

So, I came here and like others said, I killed him with the lighting (no DoT) and got credit.

I believe this quest may finally be fixed. I just did this quest on my mage and forgot about the lightning thing so I was using all 3 skills until he was at about 25% health. Then I went to mostly lightning, using the Extinguish skill when it came up and Vortex Vengeance when I remembered to. Vortex Vengeance was the kill shot and I got credit on the first try.

For Hunters wanting the Belt from this quest and are confused how to get the quest:

Collect the quest from Astranaar where you are told to kill Furbolgs. From the Furbolgs you will be able to loot a "Troll Charm". This will start a short quest line that takes you to the Lava Flow and shortly, this quest.(##RESPBREAK##)16##DELIM##Gontier##DELIM##

Still bugged despite having been bugged since Cataclysm began almost four years ago. I managed to complete it on the second attempt using just Sky Lightning when he dropped to 15%. It's quite annoying.

For anyone who already has a flying mount and is wondering: No you can NOT just fly up there and kill him. Well you can, but you won't get credit.
