You can also kill the Black Blood of Draenor mobs--they drop sludge-encrusted objects that occasionally contain the ore (I got one drop of 4 ore last night, though I'm not a miner).

The quest for this and the skinning/herbalism drops (which can also be looted from the sludge covered objects mentioned above) are only available if you have those professions.

From what I understand you can turn these in (and all daily quests) all the way to exhaulted.

Is it me, or do you still have to be level 70 in order to do this quest, therefore the reward really does turn out to be 11g 99s?

You need the prequests to get any netherwing daily quest.
You need 350 mining skill to get this one.
If you get any of the 3 gathering quest (mining, skinning, herba) you can not get any more (1 of 3 only).
You still can get the Netherwing crystals quest from the same Taskmaster, though.
You can collect the ore regardless how many you collected so I assume you can mine it ever when you don't have the quest so those who have mining and skinning I'd say do one day the mining, skinning the other day so at least on one day you immediately can hand in the 40 ore you mined during the killing frenzy in the mines. Entrances are at (65,90) and (63,87)
I also confirm that netherwing eggs will be found in the vains (10% droprate I'd say).

As an extra note, the loot table on this ore is quite interesting. Not only is there a chance you will get a netherwing egg, you can also collect:

Eternium ore (1)
Mote of fire (1-2)
Mote of earth (1-2)
Uncommon Gem (1)
Rare Gem (1)

Yes, that's right. I had the fortunate luck to mine TWO rare gems from nethercite ore deposits inside 10 minutes. (one per node) Mind you, I have been mining the ore for weeks and never had one drop, so I expect that this was just blind luck.

However, the motes alone make it worthwhile mining. If you have to choose between the ore or the herb, the ore is a much better deal for the effort.

The entrance to the mines is at 65, 90. Without co-ords: on the main map, there is a blue crystal under the 'N' in 'Netherwing'. It's at the base of that blue crystal, a little left off-centre.

It seems you cannot do this quest if you didn't have the required mining skill when you first started (Neutral to Friendly).
I had 81 Mining skill when I first started. Worked on it to get it up to 275, now Friendly with Netherwing, and I can't get this quest. Only quest I can get is the crystals. The gathering quests seem to be "locked" after talking to the taskmaster for the first time.

So, be sure you have at least 275 (not 350) mining before you talk to the taskmaster. Don't screw up like I did. :P
Good thing is you can sell the ore quite profitable in the AH, depending on your server and faction's economy, and how lazy people are to not just mine the Nethercite on their own.

In 2015 (WoD) you now need 275 mining to be able to mine the Nethercite Ore. I can see people saying 350, that seems to be outdated info. You might need 350 mining to pick up the quest though, can't confirm.
Also if you have both Skinning and Mining I'd advise you pick up the Mining quest. It takes up MUCH less time to farm 40 Nethercite Ore than 35 Nethermine Flayer HideNethermine Flayer Hide.
You can get the most of them simply in the caves, so mine while you're on your Picking Up The Pieces...Picking Up The Pieces... and Dragons are the Least of Our ProblemsDragons are the Least of Our Problems quests.

Wait, so you're telling me that you have an extra daily if you happen to have mining on the character that you're going for the mount on? Sounds legit.

As of 8.3 (and probably earlier), this quest will show up once you reach 50 skill in outland mining

Taskmaster Varkule Dragonbreath at Dragonmaw Base Camp in Shadowmoon Valley wants you to bring him 40 Nethercite Ore.
