I came here looking for info on the spell of the new Garrisons on Draenor, but this is not it.

Clicking on the Essence Font starts a "disenchant item" spell. You then have to click on the item (probably in your bag) that you want to disenchant, turning it into a shard or dust. Obviously this is useful if you are not an enchanter. It is a way to reduce unwanted, but soulbound, items to usable (or marketable) enchanting reagents.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet, however, items disenchanted through this do not count toward the the Achievement Dust, Dust, and More Dust!. I was a bit disappointed to see this as I hoped that my non-enchanters could finally help out by disenchanting soul-bound things.

Since nobody mentioned that yet... You can only use this well to Dissenchant Draenor Items only! . It will not work on items from earlier expansions unless you have the propper Enchanting level on your Charakter.

Might be worth noting that the Font only works with Draenor items. Anything before Draenor will show as unable to disenchant.

Because of its name, I was initially confused as to what the hell this thing actually does, especially considering the item destruction warning that follows once it's clicked. Seems like somebody at Blizzard figured out during WOD development that 'font' is a fancy, archaic word for 'cauldron'. Wouldn't it have been easier to skip the typical Blizzard over-complication and just call it a Disenchanting Cauldron?

I discovered something pretty cool. If you shift+click on the Essence Font, then DE the item, you will auto-loot the materials!

It might work for regular ol' disenchanting for an enchanter but I haven't tried it yet.

It has been mentioned here that you cannot disenchant pre-Draenor items here.

It hasn't been mentioned that you also cannot disenchant post-Draenor items here.

I found this out the hard way when I attempted to build one for my warrior (who's not an enchanter) in order to disenchant all the gear I have got in Legion and outgrown.

I was running a few timewarped dungeons at the beginning of March 2017 with one of my alts who needed pandarian rep. I also went and did a few quests around the garrison, taking a little revenge on the mobs that killed me ad naseum in the last expansion. Well, I used the essence font to d/e some of the draenor blues that would only get me 5g at vendor. I clicked one of the timewarped items by accident, and I was surprised when I received a leylight shard. I was able to d/e 3 of the legion timewarped items. The essence font doesn't d/e epic timewarped items, but it's still great to have a non-enchanter be able to get a little more money from d/e'ing instead of vendoring. The downside is the time spent figuring out which of the timewarped Legions items cannot be disenchanted.
