Be careful with this boss. About halfway through, he will spawn some fire elementals (sort of like Ragnaros), which can wreak havoc if you're not prepared for it.

The other thing to keep in mind is that getting through the Dark Iron Highway to get to him is sometimes more difficult than Bael'Gar himself. Make sure to have plenty of crowd control.

It's hard to find a group willing to do Bael'Gar, considering his being pretty much out of the way of everything else of consequence in Blackrock Depths.

Considering his drops, that's a shame.

Getting to Bael'Gar:

The troops on the Dark Iron Highway on the way to Bael'Gar are not to be taken lightly. Despite being located near the start of the instance and the easier Detention Block area, they are some of the tougher pulls you'll find in the instance.

The key tactic here - as almost everywhere throughout Blackrock Depths - is to prevent runners. One fleeing mob can easily pull another roving group of troops, and wipe your party. Target and eliminate the Medics in each group first, then whittle down the rest, with stuns and snares at the ready for low-health mobs. Ice mages and warlocks can be a real blessing here, and hunter freeze traps can also save the day. Stay calm and focused as a group, and things should go smoothly. If events get far out of hand, you can always run for the instance portal.

Be aware that the various groups change position periodically, often marching from side to side on the Highway as they perform their drills, or even patrolling down the length of the Highway. Once you clear the first group - nearest the entrance - and the group on the opposite side of the Highway from them, you can wait for and eliminate the fire elemental patrols. Once you've established a clear area, you can start working your way back towards Bael'Gar's mysterious doors, methodically clearing the groups. As always, watch your back!

Note to stealthers: the demon dogs in Blackrock Depths can see you. Be advised.

The "A Taste of Flame" quest for Bael'Gar has already been mentioned, but if you are Horde, this is a perfect time to complete http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=4082, and may provide somewhat more incentive for Horde groups to make the detour and attempt him.

Lore sidenote: Bael'Gar is one of only (I believe) three Molten Giants extant in the world outside of Molten Core. Magmus and Volchan are the other two. Magmus is located further inside the instance, and guards the Emperor's chambers, while Volchan is a rare spawn who wanders the eastern end of Burning Steppes. With the Molten Core being rarely run nowadays, these three molten giants may be the only ones players ever encounter in Azeroth.

It is undetermined what lies beyond the giant doors Bael'Gar is guarding, and the exit point seems to lie below the unfinished zone between Stormwind and Coldridge Valley.

At level 70 with the Shadowforge key, anyone can make it to him with killing only 1 mob.

Enter the instance, take a left turn, go through the gated door (key required).

Go to the end of the hall (run past the fire mob).

Take out the dog on the left side of the first group of 5 humanoids you see.

Once the dog is dead then look both ways and when it is clear begin to run down the path to the left (be in the center of the path).

If mobs start to come near you just go in between the humanoids on the left or the right and wait for them to pass you.

When you get to the boss watch out for the group on the right, every few minutes they do a patrol loop in the boss area.

As a level 70 mage I found him to be fairly easy, even without kiting him.

I am an Arcane Mage, but if I were a fire mage I’d use the same spell rotation. If I were a frost mage he would be an even bigger joke.

So I cast fire ward, then mana shield. I wait until fire ward is at 50% of its duration then open with arcane blast. Cast it 3 times then shift to arcane missiles. Use whatever you have for buffs to your damage such as trinkets and such and just keep going at him. When the adds spawn, just stay calm. Cast frost nova and back away from them. Shift to arcane explosion for about 3-5 blasts. Every time that fire ward is up, use it.

He should not be a problem, the patrolling adds are your only caution.

Solo'd him as a 70 combat maces rogue with just an Anvilmar Hammer (Bandit) mainhand with Blackout Truncheon offhand, and fire festival bun/damage buff. Had 2k health left. Popped bladeflurry at 50% and if lava spawns did indeed spawn, they died without me noticing. He dropped his 2-H mace :( I wanted the mainhand for laughs lol

Warlock 70, destro... went in, past the highway, ran in past Bael`Gar, and dotted while VW tanked. Used Shadowfury to stop`em, and just nuked shadowbolts. Perty easy.

Didnt aggro any grps of dwarfs. Aslong as you stand behind him, no pats see you.

Tried to solo this on my 70 fire mage without luck. He's immune to fire and I don't have uninterruptable arcane missiles. On the plus side, if it's not looking good, just run out. As long as you don't aggro anything he won't. I think with either imp. arcane missiles or as frost he would be pretty doable if not easy.

Solo with a 70 Sub Rogue 16 / 0 / 45 ... Evasion / Prep tanked him.

If you tank him with your back against the gate behind him, and him fully in front of you and not standing half-inside the wall, he won't spawn the lava things.

If you're level 70 farming this guy for a lower level player, you can avoid having to clear all the groups for your low level char by:

1) clearing to General Angerforge's room and positioning the low level char at the corner facing the bottom of the stairs.
2) Set to group loot.
3) Run back to Bael'Gar, avoiding aggro on any of the groups.
4) Pull Bael towards the wall nearest the lowbie char. Kill him. Loot. The low level char will be able to roll.

The groups leading to Bael are such a pain, and I like using this workaround when having to farm deeper into the instance anyway.

Not sure if it's just me but every now and then (seemingly HP-based), this guy would take a few moments to summon a lava slime. The other little issue is that summon would set off an inferno attack that, at least to my 67 Night Elf Fury Warrior who had no fire resistence, would hit for over 1,200 HP every time.

Every. Single. Time. At ~6K HP left he had done enough infernos to blast the remaining HP I had in one fell swoop. Tried focusing on him without the adds, tried bloodrushing the adds as soon as they popped, even tried killing a few dwarves in other rooms to pre-build rage by the time I got to Bael. These were all good attempts but all failed. To be honest the only reason I think I even was able to down him solo was a lucky run where I got a few good free slams. Even used Superior Healing Potion and my healing trinket, but again those would last for only a little longer than one inferno attack.

While everyone's mileage may vary, I could not see a warrior doing this much below 67 solo. Prot spec or those who have a lot of fire resist may fare better. For what it's worth, far harder IMO than even the Emperor.
