There are actually two separate skins for this pet, a dark blue with purple, and a paler, ice-blue.

These pets are amazing to level up against.

They spawn in large groups and will always have either 2 critters, 2 flying, or 1 critter and 1 flying with them. In my experience, the 2 critters is the most common so if you use a beast with Ravage you can take them down really fast for easy experience without needing to stop and heal.

The best place I've found is just east of the Horde garrison around 58, 64, just outside Grom'gar. There's a long line of them that you can run up and down killing.

Has anybody managed to capture a rare? I've battled more than a hundred and green is the best I've come by so far.

Plenty of Rares at 58, 31 (plenty of them in general, so just stop a fight immediately if there isn't a Rare Icespine Hatchling in the group and move on to the next group. This is the fastest way to capture Rares of any type). If your pets' health isn't high enough when you find a Rare of whatever pet you're hunting, just exit the fight, health them up, and re-enter the fight with the SAME green-pawed pet on the ground. It will contain the same pets at the same levels as the first time you entered into battle with it (and hence, the same Rare you're hunting).

In Frostfire Ridge at 61,9 15,8 I found a Icespine Hatchling which spawned over and over again. After fighing it once it immediately spawned again. So I kept on fighting for approximately 30 minutes until the rare version finally spawned. Also noteworthy, as all other pets in Draenor it is accompanied by two other pets (Frostfur Rat, Twilight Wasp, Rat). Which means even if the Icespine Hatchling itself might not be rare, the other pets can be.

I fought against this team the entire time with 2 beasts (Mossbite Skiterer rocks!) and a moth and had no downtime, but I am sure there a better setups if someone wants to push it to the limit (e.g. for Draenor Pet Brawler).

This is a great pet for carrying 1-2 other pets and levelling up against lvl 21-23 critters near Nordrassil in Mount Hyjal. There's an inordinate amount of critters around here. There are a few flyers and wisps so bring a pet to counter those as well. I swapped in a magic pet for the flyers and a dragonkin for the wisps. It's not unusual to get all critter fights here though. I also like this area because the stable master is outside and some fights are nearly next to it!

I usually use Gnaw to start and keep using it and Puncture Wound (when it's off cooldown) until Ravage will kill the opponent and heal you for the next fight.

Two pet strategy with Carry Pet - great for leveling a boat load of level 22-24 pets

25 Rare Rotten Little Helper (Club, Booby-Trapped Presents, Greench's Gift)
25 Rare Feline Familiar (Pounce, Call of Darkness, Prowl)
Carry Pet (use level 23+ for quick battles)

If enemy battle pet in 2nd slot is Flying or has Call Darkness, open with Booby-Trapped Presents, then follow with Greech's Gift, otherwise proceed as follows:

Open with Rotten Helper and Greench's Gift. If hatchling does not die, use club to finish him off.

Enter 2nd enemy battle pet. Booby-Trapped Presents. Swap to Feline Familiar. Prowl followed by Pounce until 2nd enemy battle pet dies.

Enter 3rd enemy battle pet. Booby-Trapped Presents explode. Swap to carry pet and finish off the remaining battle pet.

8 rounds.

A great spot for grinding pet battles during Sign of the Critter is just west of Darkspear's Edge flight master in Frostfire Ridge. Carry pet gains 1558 XP with Safari Hat and Lesser Pet Treat which should be enough to level a 24 pet to 25. Additionally, a level 107 alt can earn 11-12K XP for each pet battle.

Grinding pet battles can return Flawless Battle-Stones and Rare Icespine Hatchlings, Frostfur Rats, and Twilight Wasps.

I've recent discovered the addon tdBattlePetScript and I've been using the scripts found from Xu-Fu pet battle website. I decided to write my own script for leveling against Ice Spine Hatchling's in Frost Fire Ridge using a Feline Familiar. This hasn't been tested if you're using x2 Feline Familiar's and the ending to the code hasn't been tested for a third pet as of yet. But it should simply use your other pets slot 1 ability if Feline Familiar is dead.

To anyone farming a rare: Watch out for the "Body Slam" ability! It damages the Icespine Hatchling itself. My capture team lowered the rare to 1 HP...and then it body slammed. *Poof* Dead. It took me 20 minutes to farm up another one. Not a huge time investment, but still.

To solve this problem, simply white flag and reset the battle until the hatchling's abilities do not include Body Slam. Good luck and have fun!
