He was atop a rock formation at 38.37, 44.99 coords. Too high up to reach. What I did was:

Went to the zone a bit north east of Spears of Azshara, I glided through to the zone above Mezzamere, it may be tricky to land but you can reach the top rocky formation. There I waited the 3 mins and glided again to where the rare was. I ended up way above it so you shouldn't have issues reaching it.

It dropped a Scrying Stone and Prismatic Manapearl x3.

I got no problems as BM hunter, just running around and find him on the top of the rocks (39.10, 12.52), killing him as normal no problems :-)

One of the possible spawn locations for this guy exists on a high, rocky outcrop located at 50, 65. It's pretty clear this particular spawn is intended to only be killable with flying unlocked, however I was able to get to him using Gnomish Gravity Well and a Goblin Glider.

This is still one of the top pages when googling the mob, I just wanted to let everyone know, if you have a character with a jump it's possible to jump around the area to reach him. As a druid with travel forms wild charge it took me all of 1 minute to reach him, starting from the ground and using my jump to clear gaps and gain elevation.

First off, this guy has more than one spawn, and can apparently be up in multiple locations at a time. To reach the one around 27, 36, nom a Deepcoral Pod(Deepcoral Pod) and hop across the gap between the rocks at 29,29 that looks a bit like a ramp. The jump from 29,31 to the next portion MAY require being mounted to get the distance, but I didn't exactly try it without. Proceed to 30,34 and hug the left of the large rock formation. Carefully navigate the topography of the white stones at 29,35, and hop across the gap to 28,35. At that point, you should be able to actually see the target and walk to it fairly easily.

DON'T FORGET: Deepcoral Pods do NOT slow your fall speed, just increase your jump distance/altitude slightly. I wasted one because I jumped down without thinking about that.

I managed to find a way up there (when it spawn in the Ashen Strand) as an ele shammy. I will try and explain it so it makes sense!

1. I went to 29.39 29.05 and jumped to the platform infront, I used a goblin glider kit which made it easy, but is it doable without it.
2. Jump to the hull of the broken ship infront of the next platform. before continuing to the platform with the broken bones.
3. Get to the highest of the "spine bones" and from there jump to the platform one level up.
4. From here you can run pretty much straight to the snail and reach it.
5. Profit, enjoy loot :D

I too found this guy way up on top, unfortunately I forgot the coordinates but I tried forever to find a way up there. I finally got smart and simply walked a little bit away from his location and used the darkmoon cannon. It launched me perfectly on top of the rock formation he was chilling on. So if you have the cannon in your inventory give it a shot, I would reccommend using a glider though because although I got lucky with my landing I don't see that happening too often.

Found him @38.7, 45.5, over a rocks column
After trying to reach him without luck I decided to look for a higher place to use a Goblin Glider Kit so I when to 46.7, 64.9 and walked over the rocks to 43, 62.6 where I had to use 1 glider (2 are needed) to jump to the rocks infront, from there I went to 40.3, 52.7 and used the second and last glider to reach my target on 38.7, 45.5

The best part is that I got the pet.

Standing on the ridge at 58.80, 46.92, i ate a Deepcoral Pod which dropped from a Deepcoral Bud. It allowed me to jump right up.

/way 50.25 48.47

I stood at 50.33 48.49 and was able to kill the Amethyst Spireshell, but then to loot I deathgripped a Coral Skate in so i could aoe loot from the rare.
use whatever taunt you have to aoe loot

edit: there are literally a lot of spawn points so me
posting waypoints is pointless but for storytelling
you know i had to do it to 'em

You can get to the one that is high up on the rocky ledge near 25.79 31.03, but you will need a Deepcoral Pod and a Goblin Glider Kit

1. Pop the pod and go to wooden ledge in the upper, northern-ish part of the area.
2. Face south-east (should be roughly towards the large spine bones on the cliff some bit ahead of you - jump to the platform-cliff slightly to your left now.
3. Jump over to the spine bones.
4. Jump up to the area above the spine bones.
5. Follow the cliff as high as it goes. When you can't run any further, jump onto the cliff to your right.
6. Follow this as high as it goes. You will eventually reach a summit where you can jump onto a ledge with a broken vrykul boat on it. Jump up here.
7. Dismount and jump onto the highest part of the cliff (that the vrykul boat's front is resting against). It's a bit tricky, easiest way is from the side the boat is leaning. Jump towards the growth atop the cliff. It takes a few tries, but you will eventually get footing on the slope. From there you can do another jump to get up.
8. Face towards 25.80 31.02, or the lowest part you can see in that direction - mount up, jump, and at the height of the jump pop goblin glider.

The spawnpoint in Azsh'ari Terrace is reachable w/o any special items by going to Utama's Stand in Kalmathir. Run up behind the flight master and onto the stone "roof" of the world. However, as soon as you get close to the star on the map, it phases you into Imperial Gardens, and it poofs. It is possible to briefly target the small neutral mob with a macro, but again as soon as the game realizes you've moved "zones" it despawns the mob. RIP

So I spent 15 minutes scrambling up the rocky ledges and spires with my deepcoral pod and grappling hook (rogue) but the Spireshell was nowhere to be seen. I did a /tar amethyst and it turns out it was hidden inside a rock, and could attack me, but i couldn't attack it! Circling the rock, I found a spot where my follower could attack it, and waited until it was dead. Of course, after all that, i was unable to loot the corpse because it was still "hidden" inside the rock, even though I could target it. Good times.

This was near Ashen Strand, right above the flight points.

There's nothing so fun as traversing an area designed with flying in mind without the ability to fly!

If he spawns at 38,10, you have to start down at 35,32. There's a switchback path that leads up to the top of all the rock structure. Just make your way across this to find him.

Found this guy in a cave @ 56.9, 6.8 he was stuck on the ceiling, clearly visable, I though being a warlock this would be easy to get, but no, he was up there clickable but not targetable, I even tried jumping on top of the ledge at the back to try and get closer, but I could not see anything in the way so must be a bug @Blizzard please fix this!

Found at 58, 34 on the ceiling above the big hole that drops to the level below, in the Chitterspine Grotto.

Creature was targetable, but not in line of sight. I jumped around with the aid of a Deepcoral Pod, and was able to AoE aggro it. It dropped to the floor, easy kill.

As I went to loot it I had an error message saying I don't have permission to loot the corpse, as it depopped instantly.

As I've been standing in the same spot typing this, the Caverndark Terror has just spawned in the hole below me.

This guy is currently up on my server inside Mardivas's Laboratory and phases away upon entering. Tried with quest uncomplete and completed. Nice.

i believe this is a shared spawn with Sea Spireshell. i camped a random sea spireshell for a while and it respawned in the same place quite a few times, and then an amethyst spireshell respawned in its place. i'd imagine the vignette detection range could account for the rare appearing to spawn in so many additional places, but if you look at the map for sea spireshell you'll see it shows up in the same general areas.

ETA: i've been able to get spawns of amethyst spireshells by killing sea spireshells multiple times now, as well as getting mirecrawler from muck creepers. a weird thing is that some sea spireshells and muck creepers seem to share a spawnpoint, so you can get both from killing the same mob, meaning you could wind up with either rare... but some spawnpoints don't. i've had good luck killing sea spireshells on top of the big reef pieces in the coral forest area (the area where soundless spawns) and good experience killing muck creepers in and around caves (although the spireshells can spawn in caves as well).

The rares Amethyst Spireshell and Mirecrawler share spawn points with all the normal Muck and spireshell mobs around the zone. So to spawn these rares pick an area and kill all the mucks and spireshells you see and in no time will these 2 rares spawn.

one of the stupidest bugs ever. Every time I find this guy, he is usually not attackable. seems like he lives inside the rocks!
You can only stand next to him and auto attack him to oblivion. The effort spent on killing this guy with auto attacks usually not worth it. Also, you have to find the sweet spot for auto attacks otherwise he will avoid all damage.

If you are struggling to randomly find this one, you can indeed farm him. Found really "easy" way that took me approximately 30 mins. There are plenty of Sea Spireshells near murloc village (where King Gakula spawns) on the surrounding rocks. Just keep killing them. Shortly after Prismatic Spireshells should start spawning too (sign of rare spawning soon). Kill them too. Then finally, Amethyst Spireshell should spawn. Used macro for easier targetting - /tar Sea Spireshell /tar Prismatic Spireshell /tar Amethyst Spireshell. Hope this helps someone! :)

Go to the Coral Forest

I abandoned a very long search in Bloodfin Village and a long search in the Chitterspine Grotto under constant attack. I finally found an Amethyst Spireshell on top of a large coral flower in the Coral Forest. I flew over the coral flowers and killed Spireshells for about 20 minutes. There are also many Spireshells on the ground in the Coral Forest. I used this macro:

#showtooltip Amethyst Spireshell
/tar Amethyst Spireshell
/tar Prismatic Spireshell
/tar Sea Spireshell

Watch the spelling of "Amethyst". You can skip the line "#showtooltip Amethyst Spireshell". It creates an icon, but it's not necessary. Put the icon on an action bar and click often.

Be sure "Target" is checked on the drop-down menu on the mini-map. A yellow target will show on your mini-map when any one of the three Spireshells is located. There will be a down-arrow by the icon if the Spireshell is below you and an up-arrow if it's above you. Mousing over the target icon will show which type of Spireshell it is.

I killed every Spireshell I found to increase the chance of spawning an Amethyst Spireshell. The macro finally identified an Amethyst Spireshell, but the target disappeared before I could reach it. After 2 minutes the target icon reappeared and I found the Amethyst Spireshell. It had more health than the other Spireshell types. Coordinates 54.6, 55.4 (see screenshot).

About creating a Macro

Creating a Macro

Open the Game Menu (click on red question mark at bottom right of screen).
Click on the red “Macros” button.
Click on “General Macros” tab.
A box called “Create Macro” opens. Click “New”.
A second box opens. The cursor is at the top. Enter a short name for your Macro, like “Shell”.
It says “Choose an icon”. A red question mark is highlighted which is the default icon. You can skip this step because "#showtooltip Amethyst Spireshell" will generate an icon.
Click OK. This closes the box.
Where it says, “Enter Macro commands”, copy and paste:

#showtooltip Amethyst Spireshell
/tar Amethyst Spireshell
/tar Prismatic Spireshell
/tar Sea Spireshell

Watch the spelling when creating any Macro because it doesn't work if there is a typo. You can delete the line "#showtooltip Amethyst Spireshell". It creates an icon that matches the NPC name, but it's not necessary. The phrase "#showtooltip NPC/Item/Ability/Spell" can be used in any Macro to provide a matching icon. (There is a space after "#showtooltip").

Put the icon for your new Macro on an action bar and click often.

Be sure "Target" is checked on the drop-down menu on the mini-map. A yellow target will show on your mini-map when any one of the three Spireshells is located.

If you happen to find it stuck in a rock, there is a chance for you to find "sweet spot" where you can auto attack it for like few minutes.
Often, the NPC will evade (if you aren't in the sweet spot), but you can keep trying to find the spot.

What helps when this happens (and you are a caster) is for example the passive ability of your Breath of the Dying called Lethal strikes.
This can proc just by auto attacking and will make it easier.

For me personaly, even stuck in a rock, the NPC was lootable

Today I encountered Amethyst Spireshell at 70.55 25.16 and he was stuck in a rock. Used auto attack to start then used Voltscale Shield to bring him down. Couldn't loot until i used my Interact with target button. Got the Amethyst Softshell pet.

The Amethyst Spireshell spawned but was hidden in a rock. Using /target I was able to kill it through the rock, but no loot option was available. Since this has a chance to drop a pet which is also needed for a quest with Briggul in Zaralek Cavern, this is a rather frustrating in collecting the pet and working towards the Glimmerogg Racer reputation.

Update: After finishing some daily quests I checked my mail and the Amethyst Softshell pet was there, so even though I couldn't loot, blizzard was nice enough to send it to me.

Found one at /way 73.58 26.36. near the Kelya's Grave flightpath. Flew around all over the place until I thought to check under the water. It was in an underwater cave, entrance /way 72.88 35.95.

I'm at approximately 120ish kills during the Dragonlands expansion. I was killing it 7-8 times per day and then finally realized it's only a rare the first time you kill it. I've been farming it consistently (now only once per day) for a little over 2 months and I have yet to get the pet. I looked up a drop probability calculator and an 11% chance to drop after 60 attempts is a 99.9% chance you'll get the pet. So either I have REALLY bad luck or the drop rate has lowered.
