Friender (lvl 110) can be found in Gnomeregan (lvl 20's), in the instance, in the Engineering Labs, asleep on the floor in the center of the room.

Along the outside walls of this room there are 3 sets of buttons, yea, it's a puzzle, push a button and if it's on it will go off, if it's off it will go on. And if a button is next to the button you push it goes off or on depending on what state it is in at that time. I have no idea how I did it, just pushed buttons till they all are lit and Friender will wake up and run circles around the room...

Get ready..... As mentioned before, he hits like a Mack Truck, and there is no announcement that he wakes up... so use "Aspect of the Turtle", then tame away.....

Edit: He does scale so far with your lvl, just tamed him again on a lvl 100 and he was lvl 100 this time.

After having tamed this amazing creature two times, and having helped someone else tame it once, I can confirm a few useful bits of information that may help you save time.

At this time, it is possible for the 8 button puzzle to be unsolvable. There is nothing you can do when this happens except to exit the dungeon, reset it, and try again.

There are, however, ways to tell when the puzzle is unsolvable. I have yet to run into a case where the 6 or 7 button puzzles are unsolvable, however the 8 button puzzle seems to have a chance to be unsolvable. If you can make it so the rightmost (or leftmost) button is unlit while the rest of the buttons are lit, the 8 button puzzle is unsolvable and you need to reset the dungeon. It is literally impossible to solve when it is like this; hopefully Blizzard will fix this but until/unless they do, you will need to reset the dungeon. This seems to happen ~50% of the time.

If you can solve the puzzle, feign death immediately as Friender will run around the room, scales with your level, and will kill you in one hit no matter what level you are. Friender appears to be immune to crowd control; the only way to tame him is to use aspect of the turtle from what I have seen.

I hope this helps anyone looking to tame this fantastic creature!

Just tamed this on a level 90 Gnome Hunter, but there's a catch. It seems you have to be level 100+ to interact with the buttons. So I went into Gnomeregan on my 90 Hunter, went down to Friender's room and made sure the 8 button puzzle looked solvable, then had a friend bring their level 100 in with me (~~they were also a Hunter, I don't know if this matters.~~ As pointed out in the replies, the level 100 must be a Hunter.)

My friend pushed the buttons to solve the puzzle for me, but Friender stayed at level 90 so I was able to tame him.

Depending on if he scales down that low, this could possibly allow you to tame him as low as level 19 (provided you can tame mechanicals.).

If you get killed and have to run back, he WILL still be awake and kill you again, be ready before you go inside.

Stand back and target him. When he's running away from you (in the circle, he goes counter clockwise) run forward. As he comes back around the pillar facing you, hit this macro:

/cast Aspect of the Turtle
/cast Tame Beast

If you are just a tad early, hit the macro again to start the tame.

For anyone hoping to run in and tame this guy at level 19 like I was: the lowest level that Friender seems to scale to is 30, unfortunately, so you'll have to wait until at least then to do so.

I doubt this matters terribly to anyone... but in case anyone is not aware, non-hunters cannot solve the puzzle or in fact, push any buttons at all.

I found this out trying to help another hunter solve this puzzle.

One thing I and a friend noticed when attempting to tame Friender is that he appears 31 to my 31 toon and 100 to her 100 toon. It is safe to say that Friender is scaling to the 100 and not to the low toon. He appears low level because he can be tamed at that low level, but still has the stats of a 100.

Friender is tameable at level 30 which is it's own minimal level.

This requires two people. The hunter who wants to tame who is below level 50 and a person to help out that is level 100 and is a Hunter for the Puzzle. Once the puzzle is solved ask if they can get on a Discipline Priest. (Make sure the person you're asking has one) The Priest for my experience was level 50.

Ask for Bubble, then start taming Friender. Have the priest keep you bubbled and let them heal you. If all goes well you have a mechanical wolf at level 30.

Friender at level 30 was hitting me for 4k and the bubble essentially gave me extra health which the priest can heal. May take a few attempts to get into synergy. I did not lose aggro from Friender when I was healed!

Of course if you're level 50 you can use Aspect of the Turtle.

Freezing Trap will not work so don't even try.

Soloed as a level 100 Goblin Hunter

The wall puzzle seems to be completely random and doesn't appear to have any set pattern so i just pressed buttons till i got lucky on each wall.

When all 3 sets of lights are lit up the dog will activate.

As for the tame i just waited till he was pretty far out (he runs around pretty fast in a circle) then i hit tame at max range popping turtle just before i hit tame.

hi all,
just tamed him on exodar/ medivh. im level 41, my husband did the puzzles for me, when i first tried to tame him, he killed me :) tried again, and was in survival, but he is immune to the frost trap, was at max distance to tame, and he turned around and went the other direction lol, was able to get the tame, at 41 and without aspect of the turtle. good luck hunters :)

The wall buttons are a simple logic puzzle, as a level 100 hunter if you're close to the wall he wont aggro you when you activate him, i used a Shieldtronic Shield and Aspect of the Turtle but he never made it through the shield generator.

I came in as lvl 32, a 100 hunter buddy assisted in killing trash/puzzle. If you come down the elevator, to the right is where I staged the taming. Taming him around the first bend after he passes the elevator with yourself at the corresponding outer wall will make him path almost all the way to the elevator before he turns and routes to you. If you do it right, he will not hit you once. I am uploading a pic of the locations (my player as "Friender", my pet as me). I used rivets on the wall as landmarks on where I should stand and marks on the ground as where I should begin the tame. Keep feign death handy as the margins are slim; too far towards the wall crease and you'll exceed 30 yards when he routes back to the elevator, too far towards the pipe and he will one shot you before you can finish. Also, if you begin the tame too late, he won't route to the elevator, he will bee-line straight to you....feign death quick. Please note the elevator in the picture for further orientation.

In the event my pic doesn't post, I'll try my best to explain the land marks. Once you come down the elevator, look right, you'll see two pipes, barely pass the second pipe and look at the wall. You'll see a small plate with rivets. The first rivet (the crease) is cut in half, let's call that rivet one. Stand below rivet three counting left to right. Now stand with your back to the wall facing center, you'll see a large pipe elbow and to the right, a yellow gauge. On the ground directly between the two is a line. That's your left tame margin, to the right of that line is another line, that's your right tame margin. Split that space between the margins into thirds, start tame 1/3 past the left tame margin, he should route back to the elevator then come your way and your tame should end just barely before he reaches you.

Here's the crazy thing. He hits you according to the level you are and you will see him as such. In my attempts, I got hit for 4k (killing blow) on my lvl 32 (he was lvl 32 to me), my 100 buddy got hit for 400k and the creature was a 100 to him (same attempt). So flat out, he is YOUR level 30-110 as you see him, regardless of the array of levels you may have with you.

Easily tamed and the puzzles were relatively simple as well. As stated in other comments, once he goes active (there is no warning, no sound from him, no nothing. He just goes so be ready at all times) just throw up Aspect of the Turtle and then cast Tame Beast. Easy as can be.

Helped my wife tame on her lvl 37 Gnome. Went in as my lvl 100 Hunter to do the puzzle and then switched to my 100 disc priest. Put both shields on her and she had no problem. Seems the damage he does is based off of 100% targets HP. So she had 3k HP and it hit my one shield for 3k only. Hope this helps.

If there is a pattern to the buttons, I have no clue what it is...I just ended up randomly hitting them until they all lit up. Saying that, it did bug out on the last set of buttons and I had to go back to reset dungeon.

I don't know if it helped or even mattered, but this time I just started with the buttons on the north side and then worked my way to the set directly in front of him.

Had no issues after that, and was set to go with aspect of the turtle and tame soon as he came around the loop.

Okay, I just got Friender now. Took only a moment to work out the puzzle to wake him up.

First thing to do is go to Gnomeregan. For Horde players, there's a portal at Crom'gol Base Camp. To get there, catch the Zeppelin from Orgrimmar to Stranglethorn Vale.
Run in and do your thing (kill bosses, adds, whatever you like), and head down to the Engineering Labs.

There you will see 3 walls have buttons on it. The goal is to light up all of the buttons. This can take a bit, just be patient and stay on a wall until all the buttons are lit. Once that wall is done, go to the next wall and repeat.
It doesn't matter what wall you start on first.

Of course, when that last wall is all lit up, Friender will wake up and run around.
Use your Aspect of the Turtle when he is near, and then tame away :D

**REMINDER** You need to be at least a level 100 hunter to get the wall lights to even work.
Also, only Gnomes and Goblin Hunters can tame Mechanicals. Hunters of other races must gain the ability from a Mecha-Bond Imprint Matrix . Chances are you will see them on the AH, it's where I picked mine up.

I named him Sparkplug. I like him because he pretty much has the Alliance colors.

Guys I just tamed the guy as L110 Undead hunter.
I lit all the lights on TWO SETS and haven't got to third when Friender awoke and ran.

As stated by TonyDale and others this simple macro will help:

/cast Aspect of the Turtle
/cast Tame Beast

Now.
1. Before you start turning ON the lights on wall, be sure to track beasts on your minimap and target Friender himself as he sleeps (yellow dot). That way when you awake him, his dot will turn red and his icon will turn red so you know that it is time to press that macro. DISMISS your current pet, don't forget that.
2. Then start with lights on the wall closest to him, finish with the lights farthest from him (that way you have a time to react).
3. Lights actually follow this pattern: when you press light/button it will turn in opposite state not only itself but also neighboor buttons/lights as well. So you gotta make sure that you start/finish either from one or the other side, that worked best for me, I solved both light sets that way.

By the time he reached me I was already half way taming him, he managed to hit me once or twice and was tamed. I haven't even noticed any health dropping on bar :) .

If you're looking to silence your Mechanowolves' constant growling fidget sounds, just create six blank or silent OGG files.
Name these files...

mWolfAttack1.ogg
mWolfAttack2.ogg
mWolfAttack3.ogg
mWolfAttack4.ogg
mWolfAttack5.ogg
mWolfAttack6.ogg

and place them in the following WoW folder path...

World of Warcraft\Sound\Creature\Wolf

That will put a muzzle on their noisy trapjaws.

UPDATE: Due to data mining occlusion effort by Blizzard in patch 8.2, muting sound files by adding your own ogg files no longer works.

You can however, create your own addon to mute it.

First open a blank text file using Notepad in windows or any basic text editor you may have.
Copy and paste the following code in to it, and save it as MuteSounds.TOC

Note: Make certain TOC is the file extension, and not TXT. You may need to Google how to view file extensions in windows, if your file extensions are hidden from view.

Next create a new addon folder inside your "C:\Program Files (x86)\World of Warcraft\_retail_\Interface\AddOns" folder. Name this folder "MuteSounds".
The file path to your World of Warcraft installation may differ from the example above.

Then copy and paste both of the files you created, MuteSounds.TOC & MechWolf.LUA, into this new MuteSounds folder.

Lastly start up the game and enjoy the silence.

This addon should be enabled by default unless you're creating this beyond patch 8.3.x. In which case you will need to update the Interface# in the TOC file, from 80300 to whatever the current number may be.

Find this number by running WoW, and at the login screen you'll see the Version number at the bottom left corner. Then convert it to the interface number.
For example, game version 8.0.0 was interface# 80000, 8.1.0 (a major patch) was 80100, 8.1.2 (a minor patch to 8.1) was 80102, and so on.
The version# in the TOC is just a note in game, you can update that as well if you like.

You can also create your own LUA files to mute other game sounds. for example...
Make another LUA file, but this time you might name it TigerJowls.LUA with the following code inside. Then place it in the MuteSounds folder along with your other LUA file.

You may be wondering how to find the number associated with each sound in the game. Well you can find the FD ID# for each sound at the "WoW.Tools" website. Select "Files" at the top to browse, search and even listen to every sound in the game. This way you can find those sounds that annoy you, and make your own LUA to add to the list.

You can also just make one LUA file with a giant list of annoying sounds. However I found it easier to later undo specific sounds I muted by making a LUA for each category or subject I intended to mute. Then just remove that LUA's file name from the list in the TOC, preventing it from being loaded. It's entirely up to you.

If it helps, I just solved the puzzle.
The goal is to light up all the buttons on all three panels.

The logic to them is as follows:
- A button can have the status On (lit) or Off (pretty obvious, I know).
- When you press a button it changes the status of the button you press AND the ones directly beside the one you press.

Once I realised this logic, it only took me a minute to light up all the buttons.

Can be tamed at any level 30 or over. I tamed it at Level 60. Just need to have someone shield you (preferably Pally bubble) if you don't have Turtle, and then Tame Beast. You'll also need a Lv 100 Hunter in party to do the puzzle.

My Experience:
As of Legion,
I got this pet tamed with ease taking in consideration most of the above mentioned posts in regards to:
/cast Aspect of the Turtle
/cast Tame Beast

The only thing I got stuck with initially was the puzzle of (8) buttons but then after reading some of the post and mainly the one of mflson ..

When you press a button it changes the status of the button you press AND the ones directly beside the one you press.

I immediately I reset the instance and tried it again and did it in less than a min. It is very easy when you know what to do.

NOTE: that if u click the one that is on already it turns off and there is the trick. so don't think that if it is already on it is the correct pattern. Just think and follow your logic. I am posting a picture hope it explains the idea. The pattern of the buttons is always random and this is an example only to show the idea how it is done. Here is the Picture

The first time I went in the dungeon the eight button puzzle was unsolvable. Reset dungeon, reentered and all puzzles solved with minimal effort. Friender runs around center of room and if you are standing by the buttons he will not aggro. Cast a frost trap into his pathing and when he hit it he was immune but he aggroed. Started tame and successfully tamed him.

Just want to add my 2 cents to this:

1. Before doing anything having to do with Friender, clear the room of all mechanicals, then flip your tracker to mechanicals. Friender should be yellow to start, red when he begins his run.

2. As others have said, once you figure out the light sequence, it's easy. Start at one end and work to the other side. Do the lights closest to Friender and work your way around, one set at a time. Lights on/off, effects it's neighbor so when you get to the end and you have 2 off lights, go to the end light, turn it on and all lights should be on.

3. When you are ready to tame, make sure your current pet is dismissed, and just moments before you start use your Turtle. Why? Because he hits like 20 mac tracks and the 8 seconds shell is 8 seconds fewer in taming while he smacks you around. Start the tame immediately when the shell appears.

4. If all has gone well, Friender should be yours and your health may or may not be almost gone.

As of 7.3.5 I dunno how well someone can solo this as I think all the dungeons scale with characters now (at least to lvl60) so I'm not sure how easy this will be to get to let alone tame by yourself.

So, went to collect this cool pet and had to reset a couple of times because the 8-light puzzle was in the "unsolvable" state. I solved it but then all of a sudden, without me solving the other two puzzles, and without the other two puzzles being in solved state, Friender just began running around and killed me because I wasn't expecting him to be awake.

It may be a bug where it saves the solving of the puzzles to your char, regardless of instance reset, so that you only need to solve any unsolved puzzles the next time you try. It just surprised me so much I blurted out "Friender NOOOOOO!"

Friender - HUNTER PET TAME (MECHANO WOLF BLUE)
• To obtain, the hunter pet: Friender, you must first obtain Mecha-Bond Imprint Matrix from an Engineer with the plan, Schematic: Mecha-Bond Imprint Matrix, which costs 1 Curious Coin from Xur'ios (located in Broken Isles Dalaran). If you don't know an Engineer with this plan, check the Auction House, as it may be available there.
• You can also be a Gnome or Goblin.
• The minimum level to get this pet is 100 (I've seen on Wowhead that you may be able to obtain this pet, with the above requirements, but at a lower level, if you have a level 100+ player in your party, but I can't confirm this).
• Note that this can be done in any specialization as the Mechanical Pets (as of 7.3.5) are not considered exotics.
• Before starting this capture, make sure to have Aspect of the Turtle and Tame Beast in a location, on your Action Bar, that is easily accessible!

1. Gnomeregan Entrance
• Head to the Gnomeregan dungeon, located in Dun Morogh in the vicinity of 32, 37 (the subzone of New Tinkertown).
• Travel down the corridor, and get on the elevator at the end of the corridor.
• Once you're below, follow the passages to the Gnomeregan entrance at 30, 74 (if you don't have a coordinate add-on, look for the Dungeon Portal icon on your world map).

2. Inside Gnomeregan - The Clockwerk Run, Hall of Gears, & Launch Bay
• Follow the path ahead toward The Hall of Gears. Before jumping down below, collect a S.A.F.E. "Parachute" from the "Extra Parachutes" box.
• Jump down and use the S.A.F.E. "Parachute", to slow your fall (if you're a class with a slow fall ability, you can use this instead).
• Head toward the Launch Bay (the passage will be on the West end of The Hall of Gears, and you will see quest giver B.E Barechus sitting on a Mekgineer's Chopper).
• After following the "S"-shaped hallway, and arriving at the Launch Bay, jump down.
• The passage you will follow, when at the lower level of the Launch Bay, is located at the southeast side of the room (5 o'clock position). This corridor will lead you to the Engineering Labs.

3. Engineering Labs
• Once at the Engineering Labs, take the elevator down below. You can find the elevator at the northeast side of the room. Take this elevator below.
• Kill the adds below.
• You will notice a series of Buttons on the wall. There will be one wall with 6 (west side of room), one with 7 (south side of room), and another with 8 (north side of the room). Some of these will be lit, others will be turned off. You will also notice a sleeping mechanical, Friender, next to the wall with the 7 Buttons.
• Activate your Track Mechanicals and focus target Friender (target Friender and type /focus). This ability is granted to you, when you use Mecha-Bond Imprint Matrix.

4. Button Puzzle & Taming Friender
• Head over to one of the button panels. They can be done in any order, but I would recommend starting on the 6-Button side (west wall) and working your way counterclockwise (concluding with the 8-Button side (north wall). This will give you enough time to turn around and target Friender to tame it (it hits like a "Mack truck")
• When you're viewing these Button panels, you will push one and it will switch that Button, as well as the buttons to the left and right (if there are no buttons to the left side, for example, it will only impact the button you press and the one to the right). You're goal is to turn on all the lights of all three panels.
• I want to mention, once more, that Aspect of the Turtle and Aspect of the Turtle in a handy location, on your Action Bar BEFORE the last Button is lit.
• Once you last button has been turned on, Friender will awaken, run around the room toward you. Activate Aspect of the Turtle, target him and use Tame Beast.
• Congratulations on taming Friender!

At the moment, Aspect of the Turtle is level 70. That makes this a lot harder to do before level 70. The last time I tried to use a priest to help me tame, the priest immediately pulled the animal's attention off of me with her casting. IDK if that has changed.

Surprised nobody's mentioned this, but this mob is named after the robot dog companion of Neo-Human Casshern / Casshan, and is the same color pattern of blue and silver/tan. Casshern also predated Mega Man by more than a decade.

Successful tame on September 13, 2018, Patch 8.0.1 on Gnome. Completed 8-light wall puzzle when Friender got up and began to do laps around the structure in the center of the room. I did not do any of the other two puzzles, so it may have bugged, or I might have gotten lucky and the other two were simply already lit up.

At 111, he hit like a truck, so I popped Aspect of the Turtle and the tame went smoothly.

With Aspect of the Turtle being level 70 now, you need some other immunity to tame him. I took a Mistweaver Monk and had him life cuccoon me right before I started taming on my lvl 35 hunter. Worked perfectly.

Also, once activated, Friender will keep running around. I used my max lvl hunter to do the puzzle with the monk in the room, logged off and onto my lowie hunter and had the monk invite me to the ID.

For anyone coming at this later, the scaling DOES stop at 110. So, at 118, Friender was still only 110 to me. I solved the three puzzles, hit turtle, and had him tamed with no problems.

Tonight the wife and i completed this tame. She was on level 41 hunter, and I used 120 hunter and 120 paladin. To make a long and painful story short: clear instance up to Friender. Tried puzzles on 120 hunter. 8 light puzzle unsolvable. reset instance, came back in, did one more puzzle (7 light puzzle) and Friender came alive and ran to and killed 41 hunter instantly.
Logged to 120 pally, came in while she waited at the top of elevator. She came down and I used Blessing of Protection on her and she then started Friender tame. He was level 41 for her. Tame completed with a little bit of time to spare.

There was an attempt to use my 120 hunter's spirit mend on her to save her from the hit from Friender but that was ineffective. BoP worked just fine in the end, gave her enough time to tame.

As of today, with a 21 lvl hunter couldnt click buttons, i brought a friend shaman 50 lvl to click buttons, still he wouldnt be able to click them..

As of today, level 48 Mechagnome Hunter, I am able to do the puzzles. Friender is running around and seems to one shot me though...

Update: After running an errand IRL, I came back and tamed him after popping Aspect of the Turtle! Yesterday, I went to Chromie in Stormwind to go back to the present in order to do a different dungeon, so I wonder if that has something to do with being able to use the buttons. On Wowhead's Mechanical Pets guide (https://www.wowhead.com/mechanical-hunter-pet-guide#mechanical-pets-mechanowolves) it says "only level 100+ players can actually click the buttons to solve the puzzles." Level 100 should be level 41-42 in pre-Shadowlands, so I am not sure why (other than maybe Chromie timewalking reasons) someone above level 42 cannot do the puzzles.

I just tamed him and he did not retain his name, but I was able to name him Friender.

Easy to tame in Dragonflight. Solve the puzzle by clicking the buttons on the walls around the room until all of them are lit up. When you click one it will either light up or turn off the ones next to it so just keep clicking them until you end up with everything turned on.
