@MysticalOS: For what it's worth I just e-mailed Mike Morhaime, Jeremy Feasel and Ion Hazzikostas with a link to this page/to your story. I could try contacting more of them but that'd be considered as "spam", anyhow I hope they reach out to you sometime soon. Good luck, I wish I could do more.
I always assumed it was a gigantic team behind the add on. I also assumed they were financially supported by Blizzard. Damn. I'm definitely gonna be one of his patreons. It's the least I can do after using it for years.
If you believe in a deity, may it smile upon you and any endeavor you pursue. You sir, are a rare individual. ty
1500 patrons so far. It was like 500 yesterday. Money should shart flowing into his pockets, I'm glad he now has a chance to upgrade his life :-)
Easy pledge for $10 a month. Been an invaluable resource for years!
"I have health issues because I can't afford medical insurance or to have dental surgery I need. I take fish antibiotics to manage an abscess tooth I've had since Legion pre-expansion event. Unfortunately, as my body has gotten more resistant to antibiotics, the infection has spread to 2 other teeth and even begun to spread to parts of my jaw now and if I don't have it treated soon, it could escalate into a blood infection. I've delayed it as long as I could with self-medicating to try and save up money to get treatment."Like WTF?Something seriously wrong with society/healthcare? if you cant afford to go to the dentist in what, 4 years?
I hope you truly take care of yourself now, I don't even use DBM and I support it.
why dont you make dbm open source? im pretty sure there are people in the community who would like to work on it.
Am i weird in the fact that I like it more when patreons display the numbers they get?
Being in hard life my self and still love to play wow i can feel how hard its for u. i hope its get better to all.I use bigwigs atm. only cause i think its lower in resources, yet i know every option in DBM config window more then bigwigs cause been using DBM for a lot of years before i switched.
I would never have been raiding without this addon, you have my support!
As a long time WoW player (11yrs ish?), I can't possibly imagine playing without DBM anymore. I consider myself a 'semi-casual' player, who does raid but never mythic, and DBM is instrumental in my ability to do said raids and dungeons, especially new ones that I've never been in. I too am a primary carer for a disabled mother (who turned 55 yesterday in fact, happy birthday ol' girl!), and have to be nearby at all times to ensure her safety as well as to maintain our home (and cook/clean etc). WoW for me is a major part of my life, where I best friends are (my guildies), and I couldn't imagine not having it in my life. I know the stresses of trying to maintain real life (being a carer full time, without ability to have a 'proper' job outside) and trying to maintain a guild etc. I'm pretty darn worn out myself with just that, but to have coding on top of all that for an addon would be bonkers imho. I've always seen DBM at the top of the curse addon's download list (most downloaded etc), and it's always been a must have for as long as I can remember. I have no intention of using bigwigs (DBM is great, why change/fix something that isn't broken?), but I do know of others that do use it. However, I've always thought DBM was produced by this big team of professional coders who're at this all day. To find out it's made by a SINGLE man is just mind blowing. Hats off to you chap, you're a damn legend for juggling all of this, and getting it done in time too! I'll be pledging my support on patreon after finishing writing this (and will be linking this on my guild facebook too), and honestly wish you (MysticalOS) all the best with both your health and wealth in the years to come (and aye, dayum dude, get that tooth seen to! :S ). It's great to see the community rallying like this to help you out financially (enjoy you're chair made of gold chap! :D hehe). /salutewith much love, Turowai
I think that this story wasn’t known by Blizzard. I’ll be supporting the Patreon page but in the end I really feel that Blizzard needs to buy this add-on and make it part of the game. Many raid groups require it. Period. I know there are the “BigWigs” players but most use and rely on DBM.Good luck and I’ll donate soon.
I'm more than happy to throw a few bucks a month at a service that I use on a regular basis that's of high quality. I only wish that the dev would've asked sooner before life got so rough for him. I mean, they say "find what you love and let it kill you" but I don't think that they meant that literally man. 😉 Anyway, it seems like he's getting the help and resources that he needs now. I only hope that it continues to grow because this dude has put out some seriously high quality work for us all. Sincerely,An IT guy who loathes coding.
DBM is a great tool, I think a subscription model is a good idea and to limit some features to subscriber only is the way to go. Those who will only do free will go BigWigs, and sure, that's most people (just the way it is - internet users feel everything should be free - nobody really cares about the labor of other people), but what is the other alternative? DBM is going to go away otherwise.I also see it as pretty sad that Blizzard doesn't buy addons that become core to gameplay. I mean what else does someone have to do to showcase what the game is missing that people really need? DBM explains complex fights and helps coordinate encounters and has been the most downloaded addon for years. I am betting Blizzard staff use it and develop thinking people will have it - aka, they got the upgrade to their program totally free and profit from it.
Thank you Wowhead for this post... I had no idea...
Thanks for this post, I also had no idea...@MysticalOS: all the best to you! Take care of yourself and your mother. I love your work, I just became a Patron.
