For those wanting to know a 'must have' list, create an account at https://wow-petguide.com/ and set it to 'scan' your Blizzard account (it won't ask your password, much in the way WoWhead uses your Bnet account to log in). The tool it uses creates a list of pets that are most used on their guides, and to focus on leveling up first. There are also many pet battle guides, like pet dungeon guides, WQ guides, Achievement guides (like family familiar, etc). This is the only time I really level pets now and it sucks (not the leveling method that there is nothing else to make me feel awesome about leveling). Everything else just seems so slow I never want to do it lol. According to rematch I have 566 pets in my leveling queue and I usually only find time for ~40 or so before I get way to bored. You don't need to level ALL of your pets thru Squirt battle, but it is a very handy way for people to start leveling at least the most wanted ones, the carry ones, etc. The rest, which might be the most of the roost, you can still level there, or farm those Pet Charms. In Legion's Class Halls mission tables you could farm tons of charms, and in BfA you can too. A mission gives roughly 30 charms, if you beat the 200%, per character, so, more characters, the better, they are BoA, so you can farm them on the other faction, or server, and send all to one.
Xu-Fu's Pet Battle Guide has a list on main pages of the most helpful pets for the various pet battles. Very helpful for setting up your stable.
Xu-Fu's Website is a great resource on this and all things related to Pet Battles....https://www.wow-petguide.com/index.php?m=Powerleveling
If you missed this, it looks like the next events for US realms could be on: May 3rd 2020June 17th 2020November 14th 2020December 29th 2020.It is not really possible to confirm these dates as Bliz has not listed Pet Battle Bonus Events in the calendar past January. But this date assumes squirt in the garrison every 15 days and the pet battle event every 7 weeks.
