I'd love to see this site stay free for those who want it. It really is a great website. Think of it as a donation with perks. :D
This post was from a user who has deleted their account.
I've mentioned this before, but to be clear—we intentionally built the Premium system so that the features you get for subscribing are not game-changers. We COULD have made all of our awesome new features from now on Premium-only, but we intentionally chose not to do that because we didn't want to gimp the site for non-Premium users. We're aware that the things you get when you sign up for Premium are little things. That's intentional—we did it so the people who DON'T want to pay (or can't pay) don't get screwed out of the full capabilities of the site. :)
Soooo... if we donate we also get premium accounts on WoW-Interface (and a few other ZAM affiliates)? Networking does have its advantages. I do hope you guys are careful with this move, as I'm sure a lot of people will be rather... skeptical of purposes or motives. Also, as a stupid question: Can we keep ads on, or choose categories of ads to come up if we donate? As stupid as it sounds, sometimes I see ads that I like (I specifically disabled ad-block on WoWhead because I want to support the site). Things like LAN competitions, contests and conventions sometimes go through your ad cycles, and I like seeing those.
You know, I don't think it honestly occurred to us that someone might want to keep the ads on. :) Worth looking into, I suppose. Anyone else want a capability like this?
Meh... IMO I don't really think it's worth it... I mean, I'm already paying monthly to play WoW, and as for the services, I can deal with the ads. Also, I've always gone to the WoWarmory for character info due to all the ques... Besides the little perks such as custom avatars and such, doesn't seem to me like a good idea. Not to be a hater, just not a good idea IMO.
I'm going to be blunt. I don't feel like sifting through 12 pages of people complaining about silly things, but people need to open their eyes and stop QQing. Stop and think about it.
I have respect for people who work on development projects like this - community projects that give back without earning masses for the admins, and hell, the cost of a year is the same as one night of beer in the pub so how does it hurt to say "Thanks, you've done a good job, keep it up." with a donation, which is what this comes down to - a voluntary donation, not a mandatory payment. If you don't like it, don't pay it, and move along, nothing to see here. But Wowhead has enhanced my gameplay and I see no problem with sharing the love (or wealth I suppose), considering the cost is next to nothing for most working adults. And if you unfortunately can't afford it right now, well if they're not removing any of the old features, what's the problem? On a feedback side like many others I don't really feel that the premium features are particularly useful but the cost is extremely low, and I will be grateful to get rid of that codebox that's for sure. I do hope there are more cosmetic or convenient features added to premium, without obviously detracting from the wealth of information shared here with all users, paying or not. At the moment I do think many of those that pay (like myself) are not paying for features but to show their appreciation for all the existing features.
Perhaps if the perks actually pertained to me, than I'd give the $10, actually more than that to be quite honest. Anything forum related doesn't interest me, and the profile updater is sub-par to Armory. If the perks offered actually benefited me in some way I'd willingly give $20 for a year or 6 months even, not a problem. My critique of this idea is to offer perks to people who do as I do; only uses the search functions for items, and browses for quests/armor etc etc. Expand on something like that and maybe you'd have some more sales going, but until the only perks are a banner and some forum things, WoWhead.com is going to have to wait to get some of my money.
Wowhead doesn't aim to get your money. This is not our goal. It's never been, and I doubt it will be in the future.Refer to Malgayne's comment on the previous page for details.
I haven't read much of the other comments, but as long as the opportunity to upgrade isn't being shoved in our face every few seconds (deviantart, anyone?) then I'm cool with it.
