We are breaking down how to handle Shared Suffering on Attumen in Lower Karazhan, explaining how the mechanic works and providing tanks a trick to use on High Mythic+ keys for this dungeon.
Attumen: Kiting
Shared Suffering
Once dismounted, Attumen has multiple dangerous abilities focused on the tank:
He will cast
Mortal Strike
once or twice per dismounted phase, which, if not parried, reduces the maximum health of any target hit by 50%
He also will cast
Shared Suffering
, which is a slow and deadly ability hitting in a circle around him, sharing the damage evenly between all targets hit. Attumen can move while casting this, and will recast this if no target is hit
In this article, we will focus on
Shared Suffering
, as the damage it deals very quickly spirals out of control as key levels increase. In low keys, it is perfectly possible for the tank to solo-soak this with a handful of cooldowns. In higher keys, this damage very quickly becomes dangerous, and getting your team to share the damage puts them at risk of getting sniped by Midnight's
Mezair
. This is especially true as you cannot control the position of Midnight, and
Mezair
will always be a cone with at its center Attumen.
As key levels increase, you may resort to multiple tricks to manage this mechanic. We'll list a few of them below.
Option #1: Solo Soak
As Attumen's success condition for
Shared Suffering
is that at least one person gets hit, if the damage done by the ability is not too high, it is possible for the tank to solo soak this.
Shared Suffering
is affected by avoidance, and is shadow damage.
We recommend checking with your class discord on whether they have cooldown suggestions to handle it. For example, for Blood Death Knights, most players doing sensible key levels (up to +23 tyrannical, where
Shared Suffering
does 440k upfront damage) are able to take the full brunt of the damage with the passive
Will of the Necropolis
, and
Vampiric Blood
+
Anti-Magic Shell
+
Rune Tap
(+ alternating
Icebound Fortitude
and
Anti-Magic Zone
for those
really
high keys). This grants you 35% bonus maximum HP (moving you from ~120k to ~162k), an absorption shield for ~48k, and a combined 44% damage reduction before any versatility or avoidance, making the 440k upfront hit manageable with a very small amount of versatility or avoidance (or both!).
You can also leverage cheat death effects such as
Purgatory
. That said, it is worth noting that most cheat deaths are capped to a 100% maximum overkill value, and that even with one, you will need to manage at least some of the damage.
Purgatory
is the exception.
However, this leaves you with virtually no health on a +23. It is a very risky gamble, and likely only worth it if you can comfortably live the hit.
Option #2: Kite
Shared Suffering
Attumen walks at 120% movement speed while casting
Shared Suffering
. This makes it possible (and very easy) to outrange the cast, with a temporary movement speed increase (such as
Death's Advance
or
Divine Steed
) or a displacement effect such as
Roll
,
Heroic Leap
or
Demonic Gateway
. You do not need to run for the entire duration of the cast; Attumen does not start following you immediately, making it trivial to dodge if you move out at the last moment.
If you intend to do this,
inform your melee DPS
- they will also need to move out temporarily to not get hit, or they will die.
Alyrion provided a clip where he successfully pulls this off:
If you successfully manage to do this, Attumen will attempt to recast
Shared Suffering
, but there are two important points making this worthwhile:
The dismounted phase is a fixed 20 second duration, after which Attumen remounts. If this timer is exceeded, even while Attumen is casting
Shared Suffering
, he will cancel his cast and jump back on Midnight
Attumen's cast sequence seems to prevent him from casting two spells immediately, making him wait ~1s between casts
Attumen's spell queueing priority has
Shared Suffering
as
second
priority,
Mortal Strike
being first. This means that, assuming that
Mortal Strike
was cast early enough in the phase, Attumen can cast
Shared Suffering
and hit nobody, cast
Mortal Strike
, then attempt to cast
Shared Suffering
Option #3: Sacrifice Somebody (with an immunity)
A number of DPS and healer specializations come with defensive cooldowns allowing them to immune the entire upfront damage dealt by
Shared Suffering
. In a coordinated group, you can leverage these cooldowns to either share the soak, or let them take it entirely. You can either plan this ahead of time, or track their cooldowns and call it on the fly (if you are able to communicate with them).
Deliberately planning for somebody with an immunity to get hit has two noticeable advantages over kiting Attumen:
All of your melee DPS lose ~1s of melee uptime
The tank does not need to worry about potential recasts
There are a large number of spells you can use for this:
Cloak of Shadows
(Rogues) and
Aspect of the Turtle
(Hunters) are two safe examples. Since Attumen is typically the penultimate boss encounter in most routes, we do not recommend truly sacrificing people, however; the combat resses are too valuable if something goes wrong during active phases on Maiden.
Just remember to coordinate with your team before you attempt this, as everybody needs to be on the same page for this to work!

I've done the place a few times and he has always been the last boss I've killed. Not sure why you would kill Maiden after him.
Maiden is typically the hardest boss. You want all of the Shrouded buffs you can get for her.

Only on Tyrannical and I wouldnt call her the hardest. It just requires alot of damage thrown at her and alot of healing thrown at you. It is not mechanically demanding.
She is one of the easiest bosses, if not the easiest among the 4. I wouldnt call "if you dont have the dps or hps, git gud" hard. I would say that it is a dps check boss that is unforgiving for groups that dont have the dps or hps.

Attumen is usually the second boss I fight. Death skip after Opera and jump down onto the stairs run down to him then Moroes then Maiden

i play VDH and on 24 tyrannical all i gotta do is to save fel devastation alongside with fiery brand and i live, fel dev paired with Shard of Annhylde's Aegis trinket let me live through it aswel and if sometime im not healed enough theres always cheat death backing it all up.
Maybe thats not the case for every VDH as of now my gear consists of 40% versa and 19% avoidance which i believe plays big part in that specific fight.
so youre gearing massively wrong and have to waste multiple defensive abilities for a specific ability, leaivng you dry for the rest of the fight, got it
