I don't get how ilvl scaling works after all you can see in arena players with a HP from 280k to almost 600k all of the same class and spec.

This fix actually does make some sense. As long as you can go in without a gem in your socket, and not have the socket apply to your pvp ilvl, that's a sufficient workaround to the original issue. Whereas adding a gem to the socket after zoning in and having it give you the gem bonus without applying to your pvp ilvl, unbalances things in the other direction, and is effectively an exploit.
Removing the gem from the socket is the core workaround. Adding the gem back in without pvp scaling noticing is an exploit. I understand why they fixed it.
