This is an awesome def trinket in any way.
With two pieces of T7/T8 (10% more Shield Slam dmg), Eternal Earthstorm Diamond, this trinket up, Glyph of Blocking, Shield Block and Enrage active, I get "self-buffed" Shield Slam crits up to 11000 damage on fully sundered/zero armor mobs.

Do not underestimate this trinket's defensive value.

With the change to Shield Block and the fact that bosses no longer crush, tanks that were fully avoidant pre-WotLK (avoiding or blocking every attack) no longer are. Blocked attacks still do damage, but this trinket will shave several hundred damage off one in twenty attacks. Not bad by any means.

What people are not yet used to is diminishing returns in avoidance stats. Dodge, parry and chance to be missed all suffer from diminishing returns. Once you reach around ~20% dodge or parry you get less and less per dodge/parry rating point (formula is still unknown for "to be missed").

On the other hand block rating (at the moment) doesn't have any diminishing returns which makes it even better. Because of Shield Block and Critical Block talent block is nowadays extremely potent. And last but not least block value is not something we have to search for in gear, we get it by default due to strength.

So yes, farm this trinket and don't be fooled by the blue quality. It could easily be epic for what it offers.

May be fairly obvious but this doesn't start the GCD so using this in a macro in conjunction with Shield Slam or Shield of Righteousness grants you a large threat boost and ensures that this is used effectively.

For a Paladin this would be:

/cast Shield of Righteousness

This is a very nice item for protection paladins as we seek the new uncrushability, "block capping". This item will help us get to the magic 102.4% where we block all attacks and no longer take unblocked hits. Truly, this is a great item. The on-use effect coupled with Holy Shield or Shield of Righteousness makes it even better.

It's frustrating to have to farm the instance for the boss to appear, and then compete for one of three possible drops.

Well worth it obviously, as this trinket is an excellent tool for massive spikes in threat generation, and for raw mitigation.

I see myself using this on my prot pally, together with Libram of Obstruction to severely mitigate damage taken whilst simultaneously boosting Shield of Righteousness by 792 damage.
There's potential in that for PVP uses as well :)

Also it musn't be forgotten that the shield block rating adds to threat from Holy Shield as well as mana regained from Blessing of Sanctuary.
I take it Warriors have a very nice benefit from this as well.

If you're not an Alchemist, Engineer, Jewelcrafter or Inscriptioner I guess this is a must have trinket.

I'm guessing that this is superior for avoidance, but the others for threat?

/Facepalm....

It does more than double that block value for the same time and same CD = Vastly superior.

So till now more avoidance.
Try doing a Shield slam with 5 sunders, enrage from imp. prot stance, http://www.wowhead.com/?item=38289 Shield Block.

Now try http://www.wowhead.com/?item=37872 with same buffs. It adds 480 Block Value. ~~See yourself about threat :|~~

Edit: sorry, i just saw the passive Block Value you mean as more threat? If you count that you will get 20 SS in 120 seconds....yes theoretically you would get more threat with the lvl 70 trinkets....But count that those 59(118 crit) could be little threat compared to all the extra damage you get with the extra block. And if you use the trinket you will be super careful about using SS (I hope for you) every time S&B procs or it's off CD. You probably will miss 6 seonds from GCD/ re-stacking 5 sunder armors that are going low etc. But i would go for Lavanthor's no-brainer :|

I am a Prot pally and I run H VH everyday for two weeks straight trying to get this trinket. With the random bosses, it is hard to get this drop. So finally, last night, it dropped. I was so happy until the stupid Death Knight also needed roll on it and won it. I was so *!@#ed. His excused, I kid you now, I will help with his defense. My respond was; I left group.

73.33~ is how much active block value this trinket grants and that is relatively huge.

However, Gnomergean Auto-Blocker 6000 is 59 block value and then 33.33~ (active block value) for a total of 92.33~ block value.

That means if you only want this item for block value then the level 70 epic is actually better. Given the fact that you can mostly solo heroic level 70 dungeons in end game gear, if you want an item just for block value, then get Gnomergean Auto-Blocker 6000.

Imo when you are tanking raids you should ideally have different sets of gear for different situations. For the majority (but not all) raid bosses you simply want as much hp as you can get as you cannot mitigate magic damage and most bosses cause some kind of magic damage.

For trash i have a 'block set' where my hp drops by around 3k (to just under 28k) but i gain over 5% block. This will help with lots of physical attacks sustained by trash. One important thing to remember is that for raid trash you don't need 540 defense to be uncrittable so you can afford to drop to 535 if you plan on just using it for trash, so it's worthwhile having a second shield with Titanium Plating on if you have +20 defense on your shield usually to stay capped.

Even though the spam across this website with the "billy mays here: want to build a high block value set?"...lists Gnomeregan Auto-Blocker and the +str trinket as the best BV trinket....

This actually looks better than what he has listed as far as "popping all my cooldowns to get HUGE ASS shield slams" go.

I don't see anyone mentioned how long the use effect lasts.
40 seconds.when i first saw it ,i thought was some kind of mistake., but yesterday i picked it up myself and confirmed that.
40 seconds of 440 block value every 2 mins.that means it is going to be up 30% of time.
