Just picked up one of these while on the quest "One Gnomes Trash" with Rare Metal Collector. I only got one in about 10 min of spamming locations all over the junk pile areas so it must be rare or I was just unlucky.

Got several boxes while farming these for a while, and get this, the punchcards can warforge!

On my rogue i farmed 229 spare parts and got 4 boxes during the farm which took about 35 minutes.

I'd say its a pretty good quest to use for farming a good starter or perhaps BiS punchcard, i dont know if they can Titanforge, but they can absolutely Warforge to 408 instead of its usual 404 ilvl.

If you're looking to farm Small Metal Boxes to get the Paint Bottle: Electric Blue for your Xiwyllag ATV, here's what you need to do:

First of all, you need to pick up the quest One Gnome's Trash. This will give you the Rare Metal Collector, which is needed for both the quest and to loot the boxes.
Secondly, you need to look for the shiny areas around the three quest locations. Then, you simply need to use the quest item to start gathering the 100 Rare Metal. When the quest is complete, do not turn it in, or you will lose the quest item.
Thirdly, make sure to drag the Rare Metal Collector into your action bar so you can easily spam it and keep the Rare Metal Collector buff at 10 stacks.
Finally, just keep doing the same thing until you receive your paint bottle. This may take some time as the drop chance for the box itself is pretty low, but the paint drop chance is about 15%. Don't give up!

It is worth noting that you can do this while flying using Anti-Gravity Packs. You can get those from the armories, or you can craft them if you have the blueprint from Rustfeather.
I highly recommend to turn off War Mode, especially on weeks where Call to Arms: Mechagon is active.

Once you have it, you can safely turn in the quest and apply your new paint job to your Xiwyllag ATV by talking to Kram Kelada in Bondo's Yard.

It has been confirmed that you can loot the paint bottle even if you don't own the mount.

They must have buffed the drop rate of Small Metal Box, because I got three of them within the first 20 minutes of my farming. The third box contained the Paint Bottle: Electric Blue, so I stopped after that. I did set up a keyboard macro to repeatedly press the action bar key that I bound the Rare Metal Collector to, so I was able to use it exactly on every global cooldown, so that may have made it slightly faster. Other than that, I just flew in between the two areas closest to the Mechagon hub with Anti-Gravity Pack until the paint bottle dropped.

I'd like to add my 2¢ , as I've only started hunting Paint Bottle: Electric Blue as of patch 10.2

- Please refer to the other posts as to when you can start hunting (quest needs to be up etc.)

My observations :

- The druid's Flight Form , is to no use when hunting, as soon as you use Rare Metal Collector , the flight form gets cancelled.

- In the same vain, I've tried Sky Golem , to no use.

- Despite what other commenters say Anti-Gravity Pack is useless today ; the 'downward' range on Rare Metal Collector is so small, you're barely hovering above-ground to collect, often wasting time by 'dismounting' you because you hit the ground. I imagine it was of tremendous use back in the day, as a means to quickly escape aggro, which isn't a concern at max-level today

- I did manage to grab myself 2x Scorched Data Disc , since Discs of Norgannon was up . It's a surprisingly effective way to get a hold of this particular disc if Strange Recycling Requisition isn't working out for you.

- For every 9 Rare Metal I would get about 1 Spare Parts , this seems trivial, but with the *enormous* of parts needed to collect everything on the island, it all adds up. It's worth noting that this is an unbuffed rate . I haven't tested with Metal Detector . Again it is very possible to farm a few thousands in a few minutes nowadays, but at least it's a consolation price, knowing that you aren't completely wasting your time chasing the paint.

- the frequency of Small Metal Box seems absolutely random to me, I'd have stretches where I'd get 3 in 5 minutes, than nothing for an hour , I guess that's the nature of RNG, but with my limited set of 40, I have nothing meaningful to say about the acquisition rate of the boxes.

- In the same vain, I have some serious doubts about the 1 in 6.67 droprate of the paint. At this point, I can still chalk it all up to RNG, but I wouldn't be surprised if a ninja-nerf was introduced in Shadowlands, as a way to 'offset' the fact that it's now much easier to run around and collect the boxes without interruption from aggro'ing mobs.

My advice :

- Grab a good playlist, and get yourself in the mood to grind *forever*
- Do not try flying, gravity pack, etc. Grab your fastest max-level speed-set (a druid's 61-set will likely cause to much aggro-issues) , and don't loose hope ^.^
- In my experience, running this circle with the speedset is the easiest : You won't get stuck on terrain, there's plenty of 'white dots' to suck up, and by the time you've run a full circle, the new 'dots' will have respawned.
