This fish is part of the first secret fish achievement, Secret Fish of Mechagon.

The fish:
All of the fish for part 1 of this series can be caught within Mechagon. The catch rates are quite low (~1%) so expect to spend a fair amount of time fishing. You do not need max Kul'tiran/Zanadalari fishing. Once caught you'll auto-accept a quest to show the fish to Danielle Anglers, who is also on the island. Should the quest fail to auto-accept for any reason you can simply right click the fish from your inventory to start it.

Note: Below are confirmed locations and are likely not the only locations where they can be caught.

The coastal fish:
These 3 fish can be caught near Danielle, though its likely they can be caught anywhere along the coast of the island.

1. Energized Lightning Cod
2. Solarsprocket Barbel
3. Bolted Steelhead

The area specific fish:
Each of these fish can only be caught within a specific area of the island.

I'm not sure if this fish is bugged or what, but I casted 500 times on the coast where directed and didn't catch it. I managed to get all the other fish easily and fished up a ton of Sentry Fish, four Energy Cells, and 300 Spare Parts, yet no Bolted Steelhead.

I like many others was having an issue with this fish not showing up. After hours of fishing on the coast I decided to try fishing inland at 47, 37, the same location as the Tasty Steelfin, then within 10 casts I managed to get the Bolted Steelhead. I hope this helps anyone else struggling to get the fish, happy fishing!

Just wanted to confirm that this fish DOES come from the coast. Took me a couple days and around 100+ casts on the shoreline but I got it a bit farther north of Danielle.

I was also 175 fishing, not sure if that matters or not.

I swear this fish has some kind of daily or time dependent condition, 600+ catches from various locations listed in the comments and still haven't seen it.
Actually, scratch that, literally got it just as I was writing this post. I'm almost certain now the condition is "complain on a website" before you can catch this.

This seems to be a hard one for some. I was probably over 1000 cast with no luck but then i noticed the video here and another screen shot and both had a time around 3:30.

3:30 local time can and went no luck but when 3:30 server time came around, i got it in about 5 cast. It might just be luck or it could be tied to server time when these are out. I'd be interested to know when others caught theirs.

Here's my advice: Just fish anywhere on the island, inland or by the shore. I had nearly 3000 casts in various ponds and all around the coast until I finally caught it (in the open waters by Danielle Anglers).

There's no special way to do it. No perfect time of day. No spots that work better than others. It's just a massive pain to get compared to all the other fish, for some strange reason.

Fished for three hours with no luck, all over the island. At the three hour mark, I summoned my Left Shark pet and got the Bolted Steelhead in the next 20 casts. It was very fast after having the pet out. Probably not connected at all, but you get a little crazy fishing for this thing.

I caught a Bolted Steelhead in a hyper-compressed ocean outside the Ogrimmar AH. Now I know why it and the Spitting Clownfish quests wouldnt open. Gonna have to wait few levels

...starting to wonder if this shares a drop with Midnight Salmon. When I stopped catching the fish for the achievement is when I started catching salmon... just a thought..

Can someone please tell me where the lead in quest for this is, to find the patience to get this fish?

13.8 billion casts and nothing. OK maybe not, probably about 100 casts, but my brain is going numb. Thinking I may find the Right Shark, before I catch this fish.

I caught this fish relatively fast(about 3 mins in) in the cave where Rumblerocks spawns. there are multiple ponds there but you can even fish in the earth.

Just caught one of these at 70.37, 65.51 while waiting for the Reclaimation Rig... also caught a Bottom Feeding Stinkfish & a Solarsprocket Barbel within the past 20mins here

After 3 hours of nothing I decided to take a break. I logged out to main screen, then came back an hour later, equipped the Powered Piscine Procurement pole (I was previously fishing with the Underlight Angler), and I got this fish and the Solarsprocket Barbel in under 5 minutes at 36.90, 46.42 right behind Danielle, fishing from the shore.

Fished mine up at the fleeting forest (47,37) after 37 casts. Previously tried in the open water near Danielle Anglers but was unsuccessful after 80 casts.

Seems that the Bolted Steelhead can be fished up anywhere, just at a much lower drop rate than the other fish for this achievement.

After multiple location tries, was finally able to get this fish at 26.51, 78.52. I also had another quest item so not sure if that really mattered or not but still did take a bit of time to catch.

I've tried all of the trucks listed with no luck. On the up side, I have a lot of spare parts, fish oil,and mid ight salmon. My in-game luck is usually better.

Caught @ 19, 83 in Western Spray ...I actually went there as it is a recommended spot for the Mechanical Blowfish, so maybe both can be found here.

After trying all the spots listed in this thread for 2 hours of fishing, I decided that I was going to try something different. I figured with a name like Bolted Steelhead wouldn't it make sense to fish near the mechanicals? With 25 casts I got Bottom Feeding Stinkfish (first) and then I FINALLY got Bolted Steelhead. LOCATION: 80.68, 49.83 facing the top of the sub thingy. I was actually in the water, but I hope that it would have the same results if you were on the shore. Good luck and fish speed!

I think I've got a rough idea of how this crazy fish works.

So there are 10 secret fish, capturable in 8 unique locations all over the island. Energized Lightning Cod and Solarsprocket Barbel in the Ocean by Angler Danielle, and 7 other fish in their specific locations. As it's already been noticed, Bolted Steelhead appears to be capturable anywhere and no two people seem to have the same experience - I'll take a stab at explaining why below.

Each fish also seem to be capturable daily. I was able to catch each fish more than once, but never on the same day.

So here's the rub. I think that the Bolted Steelhead has an x% chance of coming up at any location where you haven't yet captured your daily fish. Once you've caught the fish in a specific location, you no longer have any chance of catching it again so you also have no chance of capturing the daily steelhead.

So here's how I finally caught this bugger. Day 1, went all over the island and caught all the secret fish sans Bolted Steelhead - all within around 20 casts. I did hundred more casts on day 1 but didn't catch anything interesting.

Day 2, started in the ocean by Angler Danielle. Caught a Solarsprocket pretty quickly, but about 30 more casts got me nothing. So I moved to a cave. Caught a Cave Eel pretty quickly, but couldn't catch anything interesting after that. Someone in the zone caught a Bolted Steelhead on a Western Spray island - so I went over there. Caught a Mechanized Blowfish pretty quickly, then nothing interesting. That's when I started to develop my crazy theory.

So, tl;dr - to catch this guy, I think the trick is to hit up each of the secret fish locations. Once you catch that location's specific fish - move to the the next. Eventually, RNG will be with you and instead of fishing up the fish native to that location in Mechagon, you'll fish up the Bolted Steelhead. If you rotate through all the locations without capturing it, give up until the next day.

I hope this explanation isn't too convoluted and that it helps someone else not feel insane.

I caught this and 3 other quest fish, fishing for about 15 minutes outside of Throne of Thunder waiting on the world boss spawn in a Hyper-Compressed Ocean

I don't even have mechagon unlocked and can't go turn it in!

Conversely, my character that has it unlocked has been fishing for 5 hours solid and hasn't gotten it yet.

Looking at the stats, this is supposed to be 10x rarer than Midnight Salmon in Mechagon, but I'm up to about 50 salmon with 0 of these, which leads me to believe there is a global spawn rate that is waaaay low mixed in with some higher spawn rate spots on the island... especially because my sentry fish ratio is around 10x more common than midnight salmon as in these stats.

maybe of use to others.... I had already caught one fish weeks ago, but last night decided to go for the achievement.... caught 10 fish relatively quickly at all the locations indicated, and caught my original fish again.... at this stage I was just missing the bolted steelhead... so 10 fish caught which also netted me 250 rep with rustbolt. I am still at honoured... and that was it, spent another hour or so fishing, and did not catch any special fish at all. So I finally gave up, logged on this morning, and within 10 catches, I got two fish, including bolted steelhead.... Therefore it seems logical that there is a hard cap of 10 fish per day to avoid rep grinding...

This fish is the devil, I swear. I've tried all of the advice below from others.. fished at their spots, used their tactics, and all with no result after several days of fishing.
I think ultimately, it just comes down to blind luck. It has a low drop %, so who knows.. could be the first cast, could be #1053.
Just keep trying anywhere, as it seems to drop all over, and don't give up. I maxed fishing here over 500 casts ago lol
So MY advice is simple, just keep trying!

I was curious if Dragonflight had messed with this, but it does still drop. After hundreds of fishing casts in the various locations that have all been suggested before, I finally got this in the Fleeting Forest at 46, 37. It took around 5 minutes of continuous casting before I caught it. And funny enough, I got this and Solarsprocket Barbel in the same cast.

Don't give up, keep fishing and it'll land for you eventually.
