Does not upgrade the quality of a follower, in case your hopes were the same as mine.

Fear not! At max level, followers' experience will go toward increasing their quality instead of their level. Train whichever one you like and be happy; he'll eventually be purple anyways.

Out of curiosity, does this overwrites the "Fixed Traits" each follower has?
Or it just randomizes the other ones?

The Follower Retraining Certificate randomizes all abilities and almost all traits including preset abilities and traits.
The following traits are permanent and will remain while the other traits and abilities do get rerolled:
Angler Bodyguard Combat Experience Evergreen Master Assassin Mentor
It is possible to get the same ability/trait the follower had before.
Follower traits are not limited by class and specialization.
Follower abilities are limited by class and specialization.

Using a Fire Mage follower as an example.
The Fire Mage follower doesn't have the chance to get the Ice Block or Sap ability. Ice Block is exclusive to Frost Mage followers and Sap is a Rogue follower ability.

Beware: Randomizes means that you do not get to pick or choice which of the abilities & traits you want to keep and which ones you want gone, it will randomize all abilities and traits of the follower.
Beware: There is no confirm window for applying the Follower Retraining Certificate, so as soon as you right click the Follower Retraining Certificate and then left click a follower it will randomize all abilities and traits of the follower.
There is now a confirm window for using a Follower Retraining Certificate

Example:
I used a Follower Retraining Certificate on my epic quality Shelly Hamby / Mulverick who comes with preset ability Kick and preset trait Alchemy.

Before using the Follower Retraining Certificate his stats were:
Abilities
1. Kick
2. Disengage
Traits
1. Alchemy
2. Mountaineer
3. Marshwalker

After using the Follower Retraining Certificate his stats changed to:
Abilities
1. Disengage
2. Rapid Fire
Traits
1. Cold-Blooded
2. Scavenger
3. Burst of Power

WARNING: This will re-roll ALL stats on your follow WITHOUT confirmation.

I had an epic follower. She had four great abilities. I don't remember offhand the two specific Abilities, but she had the Extra Training which I felt was really good. She also had Blacksmithing which in the context of a high level follower is total junk and I wanted to just replace the Blacksmithing.

So I first tried to just click the Blacksmithing and nothing happened. I clicked the follower (thinking I might get a re-roll selection menu or something) and it just re-rolled everything.

Don't make the same mistake I did. I ended up with Taunt and Pummel (which is fine, whatever) and then Naturalist and Cave Dweller and Primalslayer . It could be worse, I guess, but I'd have preferred to keep the xp bonus.

After going this over in my head for a long time, it really is just best to use this on epic quality followers who have traits and abilities that are useless or redundant. I say epic because you can train uncommon to epic, and first see what they learn. If it sucks, then re-roll. Its a true gamble though if they have stuff you want to keep, which is the most likely reason to train them, so its pretty desperate all around to use this.

I just used this on an epic lvl 100 follower which had abilities a bunch of my other follower had. Guess what?

Not sure what to think of this..

I had two of these items and used them on two different (epic) followers.. Both of the followers got the same abilities as before (the traits changed though). Am I very unlucky or could the item be bugged?

I am playing since WoD release day and I haven't gotten any of those two missions EVEN ONCE. I had the amazing luck to get 8 epic followers but their abilities overlap too much and I desperately need this thing. Well, still waiting...

I think your just unlucky i just had crazy good luck made my night. I have an epic ilvl 649 leeroy jenkins, i used this item and got 2 good counter spells EPIC MOUNT AND SCAVENGER! so lucky, 200% resources in 50% mission time woooohooo.. 150 resources in 45 min yes pls!

I would quest and grind and pay gold so hard for something like this that simply resets them back to their original traits. The "Hearthstone Pro" ate professions I wanted on two different characters before I realized they were overwriting profession traits. Now my JC has minimal chance of ever having a JC follower (tried using one of these, and it gave him Blacksmithing), and my main can't stick anyone in the mines.

Please, Blizzard. Pretty please give us a follower talent reset?

To USE this item, go to your command table, open your followers tab, select the item from your inventory and then the follower you want to use it on.

Given how unlikely it is that you will level a follower to epic (purple) just to find that it has all useless abilities and traits, you may want to consider using this on an uncommon (green) follower with a useless single ability and trait. Yes, the follower might learn more useless abilities and traits as she increases in quality, but there's no risk of overwriting something good, and at least you use it.

It's been stated, but I just wanted to re-state as clearly as possible.

This item re-rolls all abilities and skills.

The only exceptions are:
1. Bodyguard
2. Phylarch The Evergreen's default trait: Evergreen
3. Blook's default trait: Combat Experience
4. Nat Pagle's default trait: Angler

It's also worth mentioning that Evergreen's tooltip mentions that it boosts his effectiveness at the Lumber Mill, HOWEVER, Evergreen & Angler ALSO counter Swamp, So they're profession AND zone preferrence traits. So they're the most useful of tradeskill traits on missions.

by default, each faction has ONLY one follower with each profession. So if you want to reroll a follower with a profession, make sure you wont ever need it.

Do not use this on Nat Pagle!

He's the only follower in game with fishing as a skill, so hes the only follower that can be assigned to the fishing shack. If you re-roll his traits, you risk to lose fishing, and you'll be fishermanless!

Just used this on Qiana Moonshadow / Olin Umberhide. Before this item, her abilities were: Growl and Dash. After this item, her abilities stayed the same, but her traits had changed. Looks like a guardian druid WILL have the ability to Growl and Dash!

I've just found out recently that: you should use this item as soon as you get it, assuming you have followers with bad traits (who doesn't?). You will get the new mission soon after that, otherwise you will NOT receive another mission for this. At least in my case it was a week+.

I guess this system works the same as other things like if you are at 100 you will never get any char XP rewards and so on.

I just used this on Image of Archmage Vargoth as most of my followers had the same abilities. Ended up with the same abilities but his traits change. This fine arcane mage with beautiful robes of cloth is now a blacksmith.

Could it be this is somehow gone? Or is the chance quite low, so that you need luck?

I am playing WoD on a daily basis since release of WoD and have never seen a mission with that Follower Re-training Certificate, let alone getting the reward anywhere. While I got highmaul-missions and alot of other out-of-the-box rewards this was never one of them. Thanks for an assumed answer!

This is the stupidest thing Blizz has ever come up with. So i'm an engineer, I had no idea you had to pick the right follower for the first of only 2 engineering followers in game. ok, fine, one left, so I get Pinchwhistle. had horrible stats so I used one of these on them. I had NO idea, no warning, nothing that this would re roll the eng. trait.

So now I have no way of getting an engineering trait follower, except for using this thing, and relying on Blizz RNG. No thanks, this was a MAJOR fail in planning. This game has lost it's glimmer, i've seen so many stupid things with this expansion, it's amazing to me, that people are still playing it.

They really need to Either make these missions turn up more, Make the item Buyable, from say your barracks, or Make them account bound, I have yet to see any of these quests for these books (which i could really use) on my main, yet my alt have seen the quests like 5 times.

Piece of advice: keep them for the legendary follower that's just been announced! Not sure how that'll work, but he might have more traits and skills, and you don't want to be stuck with bad rolls on him!

Works on inactive followers. Used it on an epic inactive Admiral Taylor whose abilities were all dupes, got lucky with the rng and now he's a key Highmaul Raid mission guy.

I guess i got lucky. It actually re-rolled my follower like it said. Not just 1 thing but all of them. Which is what i wanted and gave me Kick Jewelcrafting and Cave Dweller on Weldon Barov. I didn't have Cave Dweller till now. :)

Follower Retraining Certificates will never replace these six guaranteed, permanent traits:

Bodyguard (on Talonpriest Ishaal, Tormmok, Defender Illona / Aeda Brightdawn, Delvar Ironfist / Vivianne, and Leorajh)
Evergreen (on Phylarch the Evergreen)
Combat Experience (on Blook)
Angler (on Nat Pagle)
Mentor (on Harrison Jones)
Master Assassin (on Garona Halforcen)

It also never randomly assigns those permanent traits to a follower, or eight other non-randomly-assigned traits: Bird Watcher, Dancer, Hearthstone Pro, Lone Wolf, Mechano Affictionado, Ogre Buddy, Speed of Light, and Wildling.

Warning: It can replace ANY non-permanent trait, including profession traits like Blacksmithing, and item-added traits like Dancer.

The same is true for other trait-replacing items, like Follower Trait Retraining Guide and Supreme Manual of Dance.

There are no permanent abilities in-game as of 6.1, so unlike traits, all abilities can be replaced.

Since version 6.1, you can purchase Follower Trait Retraining Guide to replace just traits or Follower Ability Retraining Manual to replace just abilities for 1000 Garrison Resources each.

Kind of disappointed in my experience. My Millhouse Manastorm had Polymorph to counter Deadly Minions and Blink to counter Danger Zones. I have 8 followers that counter Deadly Minions and 9 that counter Danger Zones. Since I also have Followers that do every one of his Traits, I figured he was the perfect candidate for this item. I figured all his Traits and Abilities would be changed. I did not expect he would keep anything the same .... now he still does Blink for Danger Zones and Time Warp for Timed Battle.

An interesting note; if you've been unfortunate in your travels through Draenor and have yet to score a rare or epic follower, using the Follower Retraining Certificate effectively re-"recruits" the follower in question - so if you use it on a rare or epic follower you leveled up to rather than recruited as, you will get the achievement A Rare Friend or An Epic Buddy, respectively.

Probably not the most useful of information, but nevertheless confirmed on my Lv 98 Death Knight who sits in his garrison all day doing missions rather than questing for new followers!

The mission this item comes from NEEDS to come more often, especially if you faction change since your followers get rerolled. I faction changed yesterday and EVERY SINGLE follower except ONE is completely garbage now. One follower with epic mount and scavenger, the rest have traits like panda lover, gronnslayer and plainsrunner. Now I have to rebuild the inn and recruit epic mount followers etc if I want to have a reliable roster of followers.

Ouch, OK, so please read carefully. I used on follower Dagg who only had 1 Ability and 1 Trait.

It did NOT give me more abilities or traits. I'm thinking it only re-rolls the current number of traits or abilities you have on that follower.

Thats sad.

This thing only re-rolls what you have, and sometimes it only re-rolls ONE trait or ONE ability, and you have no choice....it it totally random what it does and random if it does both trait and ability. I would say use is extremely limited as you have no control in what you are going to get.

It appears that not all followers can have all the abilities, but that the reroll will only give you abilities available to their class/spec. The Master Plan addon will show you all the possible abilities for a follower that is not yet epic quality. The reroll certificate will reroll from those the follower might have gotten when it was first created.

For instance Blook could have Massive Strike, Danger Zones, Minion Swarms, Powerful Spell and Timed Battle. You won't ever see Wild Aggression, Group Damage, Magic Debuff or Deadly Minions from rerolling him since they aren't available to him.

You will be prompted with a confirmation before using either item on a follower.
Rerolls any non-permanent Abilities/Traits.
View the tooltip to see if a Trait is permanent or not (ex. Bodyguard).
Upon reroll, you may receive the same Ability/Trait as before.
Does not affect follower iLvl.

Could be a bug alike to Follower Ability Retraining Manual, but sometimes it rerolls to the same abilities. Perhaps, if it happened once twice to you, it is better to wait for any official information.

As of 6.1 (I believe) you can now buy the equivalent from vendors right outside your town hall garrison. They are two separate items, one for rerolling traits and one for rerolling abilities. They cost 1000 resources each.

When I got this Follower Retraining Certificate, I used the Master Plan add on to help me pick a follower to retrain.
This might seem like a no-brainer but I

Looked at followers that were redundant
Checked out which redundant 100 epic follower had the lowest iLvl (I only level up gear if it's going to help percentages on a mission)
Then I looked at the missions of interest to see if he was useable for anything. Turns out my choice wasn't required for any missions of interest.
Then I looked at available missions to see who was needed. My choice wasn't needed for anything.
I looked at his traits. Hm. Jewelcrafting. I didn't have a need for that...

Turns out this guy (Artificer Romul Follower: Artificer Romuul) wasn't useful for anything. Hadn't sent him out on a mission in months.

Basically, I was left with a choice: Recruit someone useful from my Inn and level them up (which gets a little old) or take a chance on rerolling this dude.

So I had an Thunderbelly mead with him (well actually he had a Moonberry Juice - to be professional) in at my Inn and said "Look bud, either you go in for retraining or ya gotta leave."

His face went ashen - even for a draenei, and a little juice dribbled out of his mouth. He was shocked.

But since I am a fair employer I said "Look, Rom, I like you. I was real excited when you came on board. You get along real well with everyone and I like your neon pink glasses. Plus you feed my cat. Let's roll the retraining certificate and see what we get."

He hastily gulped down the last of his juice and said, "I'm ready commander... For the light of Karabor, the Naaru have not forgotten us."

Oh yeah Baby! Epic Mount Trait, booyah! And the abilities aren't too shabby either!

I then checked Missions of Interest and my man Romul was now listed top tier for ELEVEN of them!

We quickly ordered up a round of more Thunderbelly Mead (he accepted this time) for everyone and shot off fireworks.

I'd say that worked out pretty well! What's more, he's heading out on a Mythic Highmaul 100% tonight!

So yeah, use it on someone you're gonna kick any way and have fun doing it! Archenon Poros!

Does anyone know if abilities to counter group damage and to counter wild aggression ever turn up with the re-rolls? I have re-rolled probably 50 times and never gotten these ability "counters" to show. I keep getting abilities that counter danger zones, minion swarms, and powerful spells over and over again, with followers continuously getting the same abilities again and again. I have pretty much rerolled almost every one of my 27 followers at least once to increase the number of those first two traits, and never gotten an increase. Of the 27 followers, only 2 have the wild aggression counter, 3 the group damage counter, and 3 the massive strike counter. I'm totally frustrated that I cannot get more of followers with these abilities and I'm tired of spending garrison resources trying.

Sometimes its good, sometimes its bad. On one character I have many followers that have abilities that counter the danger zone thing. So you pick one follower that you wouldn't mind losing some of their other traits and abilities that they have. I rerolled Shelly, who had Sprint-Danger zones, traits, leatherworking, and I can't remember what else she had, she now has, Evasion-Massive strike, high stamina, and humanists,

Follower Retraining Certificate no longer reassigns all of a follower's non-permanent traits. Now the guaranteed trait when you get the follower is always present ... haven't rerolled Harrison Jones or someone else with 2 traits but on Bruma Bruma Swiftstone it always rolls alchemy and Rulkan Rulkan always BS.

Lately (after Legion pre-expansion patch) it seems that using Follower Retraining Certificate or Follower Ability Retraining Manual can have as effect the follower gaining same ability twice. I'm not sure if is intended, or is accidental and will get fixed.
I added some screenshots to prove it, I hope they get approved.

I have a bunch of these, and all the other random "retrain your follower by randomly deleting a skill for another skill lol" items that have been in my bank since WoD was new. Always figured them for "might be of use, but too damned risky to be honest" and was hoping for a change that allowed you to instead PICK the skill you wanted removed to retrain. After all, it is training not "drink this random potion lol"

But yeah, years later, this crap is still wasting space in my bank, and I've never used even one of them. Time to vend this trash

Edit: seems to be fixed few days after my reports? Need to check if it's actually fixed.

The ability reroll function of this item is still broken in 2023. Traits reroll works ok.

Garrisons can still be lucrative and that's a shame you cannot optimize your followers as intended.

If you read this please report this as a bug (you can also try reporting it on PTRs), you can copy paste this:

"The item Follower Retraining Certificate (item id 118354) no longer works. It should reroll non-default and permanent abilities from garrison followers. Nothing happens on abilities when the item is used. Traits rerolling works well, no need to change this specific function. Please fix this item. Thank you."
