Rematch - This addon will allow you to save a pet configuration for each pet battle so that you only need to look up a fight once. It also helps manage pet data.

Pet Tracker - This addon shows the location of pets on the minimap. You'll usually want it off, but when looking to capture a pet, it's super helpful.

Terms/Glossary

Pet Family - Pet battles employ the basic rock, paper, scissors mechanic, however they use Humanoid, Dragonkin, Flying, Undead, Critter, Magic, Elemental, Beast, Aquatic, Mechanical.

Master Pet Trainer - NPCs scattered around the world that you can challenge. They're often World Quests.

Legendary Battle Pets - These pets were introduced in 8.2 with Naz'jatar. They are intended to be challenging pet battles. They award 250 reputation the first time they are killed.

Look up the trainer. For example, Dilbert McClint. Then go to comments.

Take note of the Family of the pets that the trainer is using (ie. Aquatic, Mechanical, etc)

Use this chart to find your level 1 pets that counter those pets, then put them in your line-up. Think rock, paper, scissors.

Enter the fight and spam 1 (your only ability) until you win.

Anubisoth Idol - Humanoid - This bro is a must have.

Unborn Val'kyr - Undead - Another must have pet. I couldn't find one in the AH, so I went and captured one, boosted her with leveling tokens, and then boosted her to rare.

Ikky - Flying - Very popular.

Lil' Bling - Mechanical - Useful with a great name.

Emerald Proto-Whelp - Dragonkin -- Easy to go and trap if you don't see any in the auction house.

Spring Rabbit - Critter - Common in the AH, super cheap (I paid 5 gold), and very fast.

Zandalari Kneebiter - Beast - I see this guy on a lot of guides.

Molten Corgi - Elemental - WoW 10th anniversary reward, so you probably already have it.

When You Can't Buy a Level 25

Buy the pet at level 1 (should be much cheaper this way)

Summon that pet (right click in pet journal and Summon

Use an on it (tips below on obtaining them).

It's okay if the pet is uncommon in many cases, but it is recommended to strive for rare pets. You can use a to upgrade an uncommon.

Look up where that pet is found in the world

Go fight it with your highest level pets and trap it. That pet's level will be scaled based on the pets you are fighting it with, so use high-level pets and you can capture it at level 20+.

Use for the final levels up to 25.

Cheese a bunch of BFA Pet Battle World Quests to get a nice stock of pet upgrade items.

Go get your several free from your garrisons.

Buy the primary level 25 rare battle pets in the AH.

Grow your team to 10 to 15 rare, level 25 pets.

I love the "Who is this guide for" answer. It describes my hubby perfectly. I, on the other hand, was an avid pet collector before pet battling became a thing, so my collection has been nothing but level 25s for ages. Hubby decided he needs a mount that is gated by a couple of pet battles, so I agreed to help and needed a refresher on where to start. This guide is great for that! I only have input in one area that isn't a correction as much as a note.

You cannot learn a level 25 pet until you have one already. In your buying versus leveling section, this is important. I could loan hubby my 25s to complete his battle, but he couldn't learn them because he'd never taken a battle pet to level 25. I'd forgotten all about the garrison Menagerie, so that was the answer for us. I just bumped up one of his pets and could then learn the caged level 25s.
