I would tend to think that it's at least in part due to the fact that the vast majority of able-bodied workers in the US are worked harder, for less money, with FAR less vacation time than any equivalent country in the world.
I know that I work 45-60 hour weeks on average, and the only time I can find between that and being a husband and father is weekends. It's not easy to devote what could be family time to a raid, but I manage. Everyone needs some "down time" and my family understands that. I do 10-man raids on Ulduar every Sunday morning, and that's about all I get.
I couldn't imagine devoting 4 hours a night minimum, 3-4 nights a week to raiding. Even more than than if I were *hardcore*.
As a tertiary note to the OP, isn't it humorous how the "casuals" like myself are, I would think, the vast majority of the population of our game (and likely others), but yet when in forums, when I mention my schedule, I'm met with derision, as though being a "casual" makes me less of a gamer? I think it's entirely possible that American ego is also a big part in our lagging behind the more "hardcore" EU guilds. They have a clear purpose in mind, and rather than fighting/dramatizing over who won the loot roll and who needs it more and blah blah blah, they just knock the hell out of whatever's inside them.
Good topic, and holy crap I just wall-of-texted...-ish.

I never really thought about it but looking at the rankings now I do see there seem to be more EU guilds around. My husband is from the states, and only moved here a few years ago. I have lived in the states and the UK and to be honest I didn't find Americans any more hard working, or to work longer hours - at least we didn't when we were in the USA compared to here in the UK. I did find that one difference is in the states when the clock hit 5pm my husband was out of the office and heading home, regardless of whether work was "finished", he'd pick it up the next day. Here he often stays an hour or two after work, generally going by when a task is completed rather than when the bell chimes over. I don't know if this is a typical work ethic though - but perhaps would explain a willingness to stay on and complete content even on wow long after raiding times are technically "over".
One thing may be the benefits system in the UK (I don't know if this is true for the rest of europe). I know a fair amount of intelligent people on benefits because they're over qualified for stacking shelves (or even earn more from claiming benefits than minimum wages in some places) whilst they wait for a job in their sector. We have more and more university graduates not finding jobs but not being forced to immediately seek basic wages because of our benefits system - I do know quite a few unemployed - but very intelligent - people who play wow.
Also for students, with considerabley lower (or in some cases, nil) tuition fees and easily available zero or low interest student loans, many university students are not forced to get a job to pay their way through a 3 - 5 year uni course, giving them a lot of free time, to either spend binge drinking or playing wow, i've seen a lot of both! I think this is true of a lot of europe.
I would say the majority of my raiding guild are either students or unemployed, with a few hard workers who don't have massive family commitments so can still easily fit in 5 hours after work. I don't personally know any serious raiders who have both a full time job AND a family.

Would just like to point out not all EU players are hardcore 24/7 players. I found my server doesn't have any hugely hardcore guilds, but has steady progression.
In my opinion you can't generalise a continent of people based on who downs what boss first.

Certainly not trying to generalize, but the question was why are there more "hardcore" EU players/guilds than US. My answer, at least, and I feel Shamanic's addressed that particular issue.
The part of the answer is that while the US has more players total, the progression on the EU side is higher, which lends credence to the fact that, yes, in
general
, EU players tend to be more hardcore.
If you can explain to me how they can be more hardcore and progressive without putting the time in, I'd love to hear it. Otherwise, put your thicker skin on, we're actually complimenting them, if anything.

Anyone rising to the obvious troll attempts here shall be ridiculed.
By me, anyway. ;)
P.S. Captchas suck. Sure, the bots can't read them, but half the time I can't either. ;)
