Yes, druids can AoE grind. Cat Swipe is very powerful but due to reduced survivability, Bear Swipe is better used for grinding more than 6-7 mobs at the same time. Get a glyph of Maul (Maul hits 2 targets) and spam Swipe / Maul. Dead mobs in less than 10 seconds.

I can't. While questing (in quest greens of cause!) I can take about 5-6 of my level with bear form and 2-3 as cat. In very easy areas maybe a little more but that's rare.
Especially in cat form I never really used swipe. If there are enough enemies to make it worth it I'd die as cat within seconds anyway so I have to switch to bear.
The basic problem is that to heal we have to leave bear form. No bear form = HUGE damage = dead. So healing while fighting multiple mobs is very difficult if not impossible. Which makes Paladins or even Shamans the superior AoE grinders.
However, picking a class just because of their AoE grind capabilities is ... a little short-sighted. You will not AoE grind for long. You do it until you hit max lvl and that's it. Then you go raiding. How a class is played in raids is MUCH more important then its AoE ginding capabilities.
Paladins are totally boring in raids ;)

Not sure why you'd bother when stuff dies individually in 2 cat mangles?

One of the best grinding methods I've been using involves the excellent
Oracle Talisman of Ablution
. For instance, when I am grinding
Seething Revenants
for Relics of Ulduar, Eternal Fires and some green items for enchanting mats, I Mangle > Rake > Rip, continue to the next mob. Until the one I Raked & Ripped gets to me, I am already Ripping the next. I do this with 6-7 mobs (it takes about 6 seconds per mob to execute the sequence) and then I use Flight Form and loot all corpses in a few seconds. Rinse & repeat. It is faster than AoE grinding in Bear form, since the mobs are usually pretty scattered around and cannot be effectively rounded up in large numbers.
The absolute best spot for Mangle > Rake > Rip > Next Mob technique is inside the caves with
Exhausted Vrykuls
in The Storm Peaks. Those linear caves provide the best terrain configuration. Start at the entrance of a cave, Rake/Rip mobs along the way and then loot all the corpses while running back to the cave entrance. This way I can gather about 80-90 Relics, ~45g, some green items, ~5 stacks of cloth and a lot of vendor trash (another ~45-50g) per hour. Pretty profitable I say (~300-350g per hour, including the profit from posting Relics and Cloth at the AH).
Cat Form chain grinding > Bear Form AoE grinding in many cases. Especially with that IMBA trinket. Only areas such as the one described above (where you can pull more than 9-10 mobs simultaneously without losing them) favors Bear Form Swipe grinding.
