How to deal with a dk...

... who can't DPS to save his life (literally), and so has to swap to a tank role?
Ok, so for a bit of background, one of the other senior members of my (very noob) guild is a DK. Primarily, he's spec'd for dps, and dual spec'd tank at 80, principle being that I (a prot pally all my life who dual spec'd into ret to gear up) would be the MT.
Fast forward a few heroics later, and we quickly realise that this often doesn't work. Not because I can't tank, but because we can't plough through bosses fast enough before we get slammed by enrage timers, snakes, you name it. More frustrating is the fact that this is the case with the very first boss of the instance (read: eg, DTK, Gundrak). So it forces us to swap roles so that he tanks and I dps instead - he does maybe 1.2k dps as dps, I can easily get 2k without Avenging Wrath.
While this *does* work (we downed the snake boss in Gundrak on our first go once I suggested we swapped), how can I make him realise that a) this wasn't what I signed up for; and b) he doesn't deserve to be MT on the basis that he can't dps (and no other basis)...
And has anyone else had to deal with this sort of situation too?

Tell him straight out.
Get him to read up on his class, gear up and then try out again.
Untill then take with you some dps who can carry him if you are still intending on taking him with you to the runs. But don't ruin things for yourself by doing something you weren't supposed to do in the first place. I know I would be ^&*!ed off if I was forced into a role I didn't ageree on all the time.

DKs in general are usually a pain in the ass to deal with, most are young kids who grinded a hunter to 55 and jumped to a DK. On blackhand I actually see a lot of lvl70+ DKs with SP gear! I booted a DK from my nexus grp before because he had full +sp gear. But for your situation you just need to tell him whats up, tell him you're not trying to be rude but you just wanna point out what he is doing wrong. If he finds it offensive well it seems he will always be a hassle to grp with. Or....just let him tank? maybe you would like Ret or even Holy better who knows.

Why does it really matter? The point of running a dungeon, raid, group quest, whatever, is to complete the mission. Preferably in the most efficent manner possible, minimizing deaths, repair costs and unnecessary drama. End of story. The means don't really matter in the long run, only the goal.
It matters because of the long-term heroic/raiding balance. He's a passable tank, not a good one. He's not a long-term option in the tanking role. Given the few opportunities that we (I) actually have time to run heroics (remembering that we're a fairly casual guild), it doesn't make sense to deprive me of the tanking opportunities that will help us in the long run. It's exchanging short-term gain for long-term pain.
1 bad player never ruins a good group; I've done all heroics with one poop DPS in the group, and it is not that hard. Especially now that tanks can put out so much DPS themselves. I think the best example would be on my moonkin, where I burst 4500 dps, which more than cover for someone else being 500 dps below average.
Agree, 1 bad player doesn't. But when you've got a relatively fresh group, you need everyone to be passable, you can't afford to have one person slack off, because the others aren't going to be able cover it. With 5 entry-level guys, there won't be someone who can turn out 500dps above average to offset. It's a concern at any stage that I can churn out higher dps as a tank than he can in a proper DPS role.
As for why I want him leading the charge, simply because he needs to learn? I'm trying to get it in his head that he'll never run Naxx10 or higher at the rate he's going (which he's already started advertising for).
@Murrdurr - he's an older guy, not some young kid, which is the only reason it's still bearable. I enjoy Ret, but he's not going to make a long-term tank solution - he's undergeared, underskilled, and doesn't follow fight dynamics well enough.
Anyway, overall, I'm going to be working with the other dps in the guild to try and encourage people to actually work on getting better - maybe with some peer pressure, he'll be inclined to work out what he needs to do to improve. It's probably a rotation thing, I might go scouting out the boards and then watch what he's doing more closely and see if I can pick anything.
Thanks for the comments, guys.

show him this picture "
Exhibit A"
then tell him to go read up on his @#$%ing class and learn to play properly, 1200 is a poor effort at best.
Note i have 0 *!@#ing idea how to play a dk, i have played a hunter BM (now survival) and a prot / holy paladin all the time and i could still faceroll my keyboard and do that.
