A classic account should be able to play on a classic install with no issues. They just can't access certain things like new races, classes, or zones. The content, as Iralima stated, will still be WotLK; most of it just can't be accessed.
As for installs, I'd suggest possibly installing the classic-only install, updating to present (lots of data will come down to bring you up to date on things like Saronite Bars, Draenei, and bear mounts), but it shouldn't force you to completely update the program to BC \ Wrath. After that's in and good, install and update your Wrath install.
I'm not sure why one would want to fully upgrade if that's the install that it contains. My gut says there's some setting in registry that's reading a Wrath install and wanting to push the full install.

You shouldn't need 2 copies of WoW. As long as you have a classic account, you won't be able to access LK stuff. So you can play your classic account on your copy of WoW with LK, but you'll only be able to play classic stuff.

It's good to know that it can be done on one install, since I've been considering dual accounts for a while.
My only question would regard the ToS for the software. I'd think they'd not want to have one software key running two instances of the game, despite two accounts. I'd love to know more, if someone has greater knowledge of this.
