Headset mic problem

Okay, I've got a really annoying problem.
When I bought my first headset a while ago, the mic worked, but my voice was extremely faint. A bit later, mic completely stopped detecting my voice. I thought it was a small rupture in the wiring, but I just purchased a new headset today, and it still doesn't detect my voice.
This is not just ventrilo, but WoW voice chat, and everything else. I'm guessing then that it's a setting in Windows XP that I somehow changed, or some other setting.
It's nothing stupid like being plugged into the wrong jack, or the microphone options muted in Volume Control.
My computer, however, does detect playing music and I can put it on vent and others hear it, but my mic does not pick up my voice at all.
If anyone's got some suggestions I'd love to hear it.

I have experienced such a thing before trying to change settings here and there. Inevitably I skip over that one specific setting that fixes it all.
I can't recall in Windows XP, but somewhere in the Control Panel there should be a setup for "start speech recognition" or "set up a microphone" where it asks you to recite a sentence or two. Running through this setup often unplugs whatever it was I missed.
