No, he's right. I tried it out. A few minutes ago I prayed to President Obama to turn on a light. It didn't happen. Therefore, President Obama does not exist. I also prayed to the Pope that a large amount of gold would appear in from of me. Didn't. Pope doesn't exist.
Hang on...
I tried to pray to Malgayne to get me a glass of OJ... no OJ... no Malgayne.
Like he said, science works.

The counterargument would be that none of those examples are supernatural, and what you've requested of them is outside of their governing powers within my reasoning anyways.

That was kind of what I said, The religion that I practise also states that God will not grant selfish requests or something that I can readily do.
Asking for light to disprove other people is selfish in the regard that I'm trying to prove that I'm superior.
or to put it in other words, God doesn't want to give me light just because I asked for it.

The difference being that the Pope, President Obama and Malgayne are not claimed to be all powerful and all knowing beings.

The thought of a higher being, along with pretty much any scientific explanations we have, are just theories. Early civilization needed a way to explain the reason as to how/why we are here on this planet. The thought of a higher being(s) brought them security, a reason to grow, and social morals. History shows that civilizations that had a religion were far more powerful than those without.
Me personally? I don't know if there is a higher being watching us grow or if there isn't. I can make arguments for both sides. Social stigmas have but atheists in a bad light, but they are entitled to believe what they want. Same thing for any religions; Christians and Catholics will believe in their God, Buddhists will believe in theirs, and Hindus will believe in theirs. No matter what you say, it will be difficult to change their minds. All have reasons to believe in what they want.
The thing about religion is that its all pretty much stories now. Whether its the Quran, the Bible, or the Buddhist Tipitaka. All these 'stories' have stood thousands of years of writing, re-writing, translation after translation, more re-writing, etc... How accurate do you think these are to the original scriptures?

MyTie's counterargument will be that even if Obama had the power to turn on the light, why would he have to?
Boottspurr... not only are you able to see through my sarcasm, but you are able to extrapolate the point I am making, and THEN repackage it into something even these people will like to read.
I'm making you my official spokesperson.

Alright, I admit that praying for light is a bit selfish. Why don't you pray for something that is a bit more altruistic of you. Perhaps for an end to the war in the Congo? Or maybe smaller scale like to cure a rape victim of AIDS? I mean, Jesus cured people of diseases so that's gonna be okay.
I doubt that you would believe that it was the inference of God even if the war ended, nor will you think of it as a answered prayer if AIDs was defeated by a new cure that someone found accidently. God doesn't have to work in miracles, he can work in completely scientifically valid ways.
My point was that you can't lump supernatural religious beliefs in with science. Science CAN be tested and is pretty regularly.
Except the tests are at your own pace. It's perspective.
If you are really interested in disproving science or declaring it a religion please show me that you can live without it and that it hasn't worked for you. I apply science pretty regularly as a career and it pretty much works for me every time. Maybe it's weird for me to put my "faith" in science but it's been right and useful a hell of a lot more often than Christianity.
Again, this is your opinion. I believe the Christianity has proven more useful to me than science has because adhereing to the values even if they did not always agree with my instincts helped with getting along with other people.
If I have to restate my point of being in this thread, it's to prevent people from trying to shut each other up on the basis they are more right.

I apply science each minute of my career. Really, just... all the time. To this day, Christianity has helped me more than science has. I don't care how much better my life is, I never would be able to appreciate it if it were not for the humility and gratitude I learned through religion. I'm not saying that is the case for everyone. That is just the case for me. What I am really saying is that your claims are right from your perspective, and JUST from your perspective. No one else ascribes to your perspective. I'm sure some people's perspectives agree with yours, but you can't apply what you believe to everyone.

MyTie, you would never have been born if it weren't for science. You wouldn't exist. So, no, your religion is not superior to science.

That is a very ignorant statement TheMediator.
No its not. Its totally true. The world population couldn't sustain itself without the aid of fertilizers, medicine, etc. etc.

And you guys clearly underestimate the benefits science has on our society. Almost everything you have done in your life has been made significantly easier via scientific endeavor.
It hasn't just made things easier, its made things that were impossible, possible.
