If you didn't actually do anything wrong, you should probably get in touch with Customer Service and try to figure out what's going on. Worst case scenario is that your account has been compromised and someone else has been using it for less than savory purposes. You'll have a lot more to worry about than a 3 day suspension if this is the case.
To answer your question - assuming you didn't do anything wrong and you don't have a history of run ins with the powers that be, I don't think you need to worry about being permanently banned. Different infractions will net you different penalties. The penalty volcano is in place for people who insist on repeating the same offenses over and over again without learning (or caring).

You just said you were hacking and your confused that you got punished.
The education system as failed you.
Next time you mess up, you account will be no more.
Well, you're the one who is unable to read.
Sorry, had to do it.
But yeah, if you were unjustly banned then you need to contact customer support. If it is not resolved then your next punishment will be a final warning.

Well the other day my account got a 72-hour ban because I was hacking but I really wasn't.

wowgeek; dont try and confuse people and say "or had a web browser open to a website about cheating on WoW" this is simply illegal on Blizzards end to do, lawsuits would be flying around and the goverment would be stepping in. They can however have a quick scan of already running programs that would fall under their banned list (kinda like Steams anti-hacking program) they dont/cant check every program youre running obviously but it can detect ones that they dont want running when you load up wow
