Looking from a purely convenient point of view, feral will be easiest.
However, balance can be a lot of fun. You're saying it's for when your leveling partner isn't online, so you won't be focusing on efficiency I guess. In this case you can go for balance. I must say gear is much more deciding here than it is for ferals, so you won't be progressing as fast until you hit outland. From that point on gear will even out much more, but in Azeroth it can be a pain in the ass.
I have never played as balance before, so I do not know the ins and outs. I can say that feral is also a lot of fun and gives a huge amount of survivability. Not to mention, when you reach level 38 and get pounce you'll
really
be advantaged over others.
Resto leveling is virtually impossible without dungeons. Damage output is too low to be efficient, but a resto druid from 30+ can be really useful in dungeons. If your server isn't highly populated or you don't like pre-northrend dungeons, do not go resto.
If you'd like further information on these specs there are plenty of threads on the druid forums that go into every little detail.

I just finished leveling a new balance druid 1-60 on a new realm. It's definitely possible. You just have to get used to drinking water all the time. Not being a mage, you don't get free food. The high prices of water combined with the huge number of druid skills makes it hard to afford things early on. I made a DK on the realm first and went through Hellfire. I ended up with around 200g I could lend her for training new skills, lvl 30 mount and water.
I didn't have to buy any items to level. I just used what quest rewards I could find. Most of the time it was cloth items that had the best stats although there were a few good leather items. I had about 120 spellpower by level 60 with all talent buffs. Not great but not horrible either. On same level stuff in Azeroth it took about 3-4 Starfires and a Insect Swarm to down them.
I think I will have to drink a lot even up to level 80. Unless you have epics, your mana regen isn't that good and you don't have a huge mana pool to begin with. I find with that because Balance is a pretty fun spec. I already have a feral druid at 70, so I wanted to try something different.

1-20 is a lot less painful if you pretend you're balance.
I say: Go for it.

Still makes me feel old... Old school would be more like thundercats or GI joe
And 1-20 should actuall be easier as a balance the only problem is you will be in mostly cloth.
