I've got a lvl 65 frost mage and I was wondering about the spell invisibility. Do Mages get it at a certain level or is it linked to your spec? Sorry if this seems like a newby question but i've looked around and can't seem to find the answer.

You're so close you can taste it. You get it at level 70. And it's available to any spec. Though it's considered an arcane spell.

Thanks that's really helpful :P

Quick little search on wow head for "invisibility" would have done the trick, apparently it was lv68. You bought it from the trainer at the appropriate level. There done. There is some arcane talent that lowers CD on it as I recall it.

Invisibility
.
With arcane talent
Prismatic Cloak
, you are fading instantly.
With arcane talent
Arcane Flows
Invisibility's CD becomes 180*0.7 = 126 seconds.

Thanks guys, that's all really useful. I have specced to Frost but I've also now started adding talents to Arcane as I find I use Arcane Blast and Arcane Missiles a lot. The thing that threw me was the Prismatic Cloak talent, which it looks like you could pick up at level 30-40 if you specced Arcane. I wondered why you could get a talent for it at that level yet I couldn't get the spell...

It's the same with
Ice Floes
. Some of the things the talent affects you already have and some you will get.
There are others, too.

Sure. I'm probably not the best mage around and I think sometimes our rotations are personal choice, so this might not be the ideal method but it works okay for me. When I'm fighting a high level npc I usually start by summoning my water elemental, then hit them with a with frostbolt (or 3 if I've judged the range right). I have my mana shield and my ice barrier up but I usually freeze them to the spot when they get close and 'cone of cold' them.
I've always found cone of cold to be quite expensive for mana so at that point, while they're still frozen I use arcane blast and then either repeat or arcane missile them depending on how much health they have left. That's usually job done and I have enough time to take on one or two more before my mana runs low or my elemental fades.
I'm more than happy to hear how anyone else does it tho and try new combo's...

Well, you know a lot more than me about mages... no argument there, but I thought since arcane blast buffs arcane missiles (and I should mention I have the glyph for arcane missiles) I would get more dps from arcane at that stage of the fight for the mana used. I also find that if they break the freeze early and I'm part way through casting a frost bolt there's more chance of it being interrupted than with arcane missiles. Also I have to admit I like the instant effect of AM as opposed to watching something beating on me while I my frostbolt winds up.
PS I haven't got a frost spec glyph yet and the ones I've seen on the AH don't really inspire me that they'll improve anything I do in any serious way. Is there one you could recommend?

If something hits you while you're channeling Missiles you lose ticks, which makes it do a lot less damage and cost more mana than if you had spent the time casting a Frostbolt.
Glyphs you should have while leveling: Highest priority glyph is
This one
, then probably the
water elemental
one seeing as you're frost.
I can totally understand using Arcane Blast while leveling, since it is a fairly cheap spell (Or it was while I was leveling, though that was two incarnations of the spell ago). But if you're not Arcane specced (Thus, the importance of the buff to arcane damage is low) then it's really only a spell you want to cast if you know it'll kill the mob.
As Frost, it's binary Frostbolts until the mob is close, then distance-makers such as Cone or Nova, then more Frostbolts. Really, there's no reason to use Arcane Missiles. Arcane Blast, sure, it's a nice and cheap spell (Though Scorch, depending on the mobs remaining hp, is potentially better.) but Missiles is inferior to a frost-specced Frostbolt by a lot.

Well I really appreciate the input and I will try that out. I've only recently re-specced from fire to frost so I'm still getting used to it. The two major glyphs I have are Improved Scorch and Arcane Missiles. Last night I had a go with this combo: Frosbolt, scorch, fireblast, frost nova, cone of cold, but the again I finished with arcane missiles. The reason for the arcane missile finisher was that I was farming SM (still saving for my epic mount) and some of the npc's walk away past you. AM follows the target so I never get the 'Target must be in front of you' error message.
All that being said I will try to stick with frostbolt and see how I get on...

because it's still a fixed damage reduction from all sources.. always helpful for squishy people like mages.

if you're specced frost, glyph of imp. scorch is doing you no good sinec it only works with the talented imp. scorch. If you're specced frost, frostbolt is pretty much all the spell you need. if too many mobs are getting too close to you, simply frost nova, blink, blizzard.... profit!
