Critical Strike Rating vs Spirit

Since most gear in Ulduar now has spirit its important to know how it will affect my character. So, point for point which is better for a mage? Specfically a fireball mage.
Logically, it would seem critical strike rating is still better since 35% (i think thats right with glyph) of spirit is converted to back to crit rating. Spirit also helps with mana regen, but that isnt too much of an issue for fireball mages.
I guess i'm missing the point of why blizzard made these changes to spirit and gear. Could it be to keep fireball mages dps in check with the other specs which could benefit more from it (FFB-more crit, arcane-more mana regen)? Or is it meant to control all mages dps? Or is Blizzard just trying to force a once useless stat onto us?
Look at the highest rated staff from Ulduar, The Staff of Endless Winter. Its got a lot of SP, crit rating, and spirit. If instead of spirit there was haste i would think this staff would be sooo much better.
So whats the deal with spirit? Someone break it down.

It's so that more drops are viable to more builds and classes, thereby you shard fewer items.

55% of spirit is crit with glyph. Like other classes that get use out of spirit, it is obviously not something that you actively desire on your gear, since point for point, it is of course inferior than the stat it converts to. It's a consolation stat, but otherwise a waste of itemization points.
