Falling through nothingness?

I dc'd while in Strat. When I was able to log back in, the character menu placed my toon in Strat, and the correct loading screen displayed. However, when the loading screen was done, I was not in fact in Strat, but in Gadgetzan. I cursed the gods, and attempting to port myself to Ironforge to being the long trek back to Strat.
I then dc'd again. The next time I was able to log back on, I was in neither Ironforge, nor Gadget, but falling through nothingness from a very great height. I was surrounded by lots of other toons. I then "landed" on nothing. I briefly saw the resurrect button, which quickly dissappeared as my ghost continued to fall through nothingness. I couldn't log off, so I used task manager to quit the program.
The next time I logged on, my ghost was in the graveyard outside of Gadget. Hurray, a bloody great repair bill and a long slog back to Strat, and oh yes, the elixirs I had popped just before all this fun started had "expired" even though far less than 2 hours had elapsed.
Is this just the gods of WoW playing silly bugger with me, or is this a common system response to dcing in Strat?

Yep, disconnects can cause this. Basically, the connection was disrupted so the server doesn't know where your character should be. They have some standard areas where players are ported that don't have any location. Usually, it fixes itself after the connection is good but sometimes you get stuck in nothingness and have to get a GM to teleport you.

Also Elixirs expire when you die
True, however since this really wasn't a "normal" death, I didn't think the usual rules would apply. Something occurred to me last night; I wonder what would have happened if I had spammed Slowfall? Where would have been when I landed? Could I have mounted up or walked anywhere?
I'm considering intentionally doing this to find out.
