One of the great draws to WoW is the setting of goals and meeting of accomplishments. Goals can be quite varied. Maybe you want to hit 1800 arena rating by the end of the week. Maybe you want to clear Naxx in under 3 hours. Maybe you want to get enough Heroism badges to get your first piece of Tier 7. All of these are goals and you feel good when you accomplish those goals.
Achievements are the same thing, for those types of people that it interests. I like seeing something presented (e.g Complete 3000 Quests) and working toward that goal. So what if all I get is a "useless" point value and maybe a title or a tabard. It's something to work for. "Alright, only 100 more quests. 75 more quests to go. Alright, down to 10, getting close..."
What I don't understand is why a player of WoW would disparage other players by putting the moniker of "Nerd Points" or "E-peen Points" on something that a great many people enjoy doing. I don't like to PvP, I don't care what my Arena rating is. It's just not something I care for. It doesn't mean I think Arena is stupid, or that I would try and start name-calling those people who do enjoy Arena and working toward high ratings.
I'm sure a lot of people call it Nerd Points because they think it's cool (or it somehow makes them look more cool), but in reality, by saying that, they are just racking up @#$%head Points.
