You should be making a lot of money from mining. when you can prospect the higher levels of ore and you get the better (blue) gems you really start to make a lot of money. I've made tons of money from mining and JC but I didn't make a lot of money from JC until I could make gear greater than level 70.

anything from BC is trash unfortunately. This was my fairly recent experience of leveling JC. If you have an enchanter alt DE whatever you can and sell the enchanting mats, you'll make some money back off them.
Everything else vendor, I ended up with hundreds of green BC gems, they're worthless and just take up bank space. even more so as they do not stack.

JC is kinda like enchanting, its an endgame moneymaker. If you stick with it and get it maxed, along with your mining prof you will make alot of gold. If you try to level it and always keep it around your level you will probably spend the entire road to 80 broke. Personally, I am proud to say until I hit 80 on my toons I was a gathering #$%^&. I went with mining and skinning, and sold the leathers while I kept the ore i mined in my bank. Once I hit 80 I dropped skinning and powerleveled my JC to max in no time at all, while only spending gold for the actual new recipies from the trainers, required to level any skill. This gets a little expensive, as does any crafting profession. The beauty of crafting is once you are at level 80 and have your skill maxxed, you will make a killing.

Get the recipes that people need in high demand (Delicate/Bold/Runed Scarlet Ruby), and monitor the auction house for a big difference between the raw gem and the cut ones.
Else.. well, get a lot of recipes, and look for people looking for a JC'er. The more rare stuff you got, the bigger chance of success you have, and some might consider making you their "prime cutter" :)

-Vanilla gems can sell with a fairly decent profit.
-TBC gems is worthless, bcs wotlk is so much better and not so expensive.
- Wotlk gems does sell well, some cuts sell alot more than others.
