Hi there!
I'm currently leveling
my paladin alt
. I read the stickies about leveling and they point out that it's a wise choice to switch to prot for AE-Grinding once you hit level 40-something.
But let's just assume that I'm not into grinding very much. I like to follow quest paths and nodes. I like to be carried by the quests during leveling.
Now, considering this playstyle, is it still advicable to choose
a protection spec
over
a retribution one
?
Note: I'm currently questing through the last bits of
Stranglethorn Vale
and have no downtime and no problems with mobs of my level or slightly higher.

my prot pally is lvl 75 right now. i switched to prot around lvl 71 after going ridiculously slowly thru outlands as holy. the great thing about prot... you won't need to group.. like almost ever... like it's almost ridiculous... even when I was levelling my DK, usually the 3 man quests in northrend I needed help with. i worked thru all of the 3 man quests in dragonblight, grizzly hills, and thus far into zul'drak without any need for grouping.
I also don't do any aoe grinding either, cause it's not really my style. but as prot, with halfway decent prot gear when you get higher up, you won't need any help with much of anything. seal of vengence and judging light on everyone, keeping blessing of sanct up, and divine plea up when you're in longer pulls.. you'll be able to basically continuously run from groups of mobs to groups of mobs.... it's like aoe grinding, but you're doing the quests as well... I really have a lot of fun with it.
here
is my pally if you're interested.

General consensus is that retribution is easier to quest in, because you plow through single / small groups of targets much faster. You'll probably see a bigger impact once you hit L50/60 and you get Crusader Strike/Divine Storm.
Achloryn is right though in that prot pallies find it very easy to do 'group' quests. You can basically ignore the 'group' tag on a quest unless it's 'Group ' in which case it might be slightly more involving, and you may need to use Lay on Hands...
Having said that though, if you're playing for the joy of running through the quests, then you're probably also the type who'd enjoy being mobbed occasionally and using your divine-granted powers to wipe out the evil and emerge victorious. It was incredibly satisfying to ride straight into the middle of Andorhal (in WPL), surrounded by skeletons and ghouls, slay Ajax the Summoner, then consecrate and exorcise my way out. That's something you're not going to be able to do as Ret. You're a high enough level - pick up dual spec and play according to the situation.

I was tempted to try and do the Wanted: Kreug Oathbreaker quest in Dragonblight solo, but I figured i would save myself the trauma and group up for it anyway since I saw people in general chat lfg for it.
althought, if I was on my alt (a mage) levelling, and went up to see some 73 prot pally solo that mfer i would've crapped my pants, cause that was a relatively hard fight... actually, idk if i'd have been able to solo it simply cause of the knockbacks usually throwing you into other mobs.. the last thing you need when you're trying to solo a 5 man quest at level is adds.. haha
Ret will indeed let you just blow thru most quests cause of the lulzy amount of damage you'll be outputting, but you put out quite a good bit of damage as prot too.. Between avenger's shield, hammer of the righteous, shield of righteousness, holy shield, judgement of light, and divine plea, you can pretty much last forever against a group of mobs at level..
For instance, there's a quest in grizzly hills (at least for alliance... i'm not sure about the horde) where you have to go up this tower that's much like shadowfang keep, and fight the shade of arugal (i think his name was)... Randomly during the fight he'll summon adds.. The first time is a group of four, the 2nd time is a group of 7, and the 3rd time is a group of four again.. As a ret pally i'd have had my arse handed to me if I tried to solo it.. however, as prot, I just consecrated my way thru them, turned to face them and kept activiating holy shield as soon as it went off CD, and absolutely facerolled my way through those groups. Occasionally healing myself cause Arugal basically spams shadow bolt. I only got below half health once, and that was when the group of 7 showed up. another group showed up and was watching me fight him alone and luled and cheered at me when i beat him. :)

Actually, I almost did solo it... but decided against it likewise because I had a guild druid who wanted to do it too. Funnily enough, we saw a 76 mage try to solo it, watched her get her arse handed to her, then followed up and finished the quest (making sure to gank the mage on the way out).

I remember that fight. I do remember doing basically exactly that - one of the other moments (similar to Andorhal) where the stun in Holy Wrath was absolutely useless, because my computer froze for the same amount of time in attempting to render the graphics of countless skeletons getting smashed.

too bad you couldn't do something with a knockback like a mage's blast wave or shammy's thunderstorm to knock him into kreug and let him gank the mage for ya. lmao.

y'know, to be perfectly honest, i never even thought about using holy wrath on those guys... just thought "whoop.. ton of mobs.. better kick their arses"... heh

You can very effectively quest as both prot and ret.
Ret is gonna be quicker but not necesarrily by much.
Prot is gonna have an easier time with the kill XX amount of Y mobs. Just pulling XX amount of mobs together and taking them down in one go (Nesingwary quests anyone?).
And group quests is like previously stated a cake walk.
Ret is gonna have an easier time with pretty much every other quest. Because of the high burst they're able to put out.
What you chose to play by is totally up to you every talent spec is viable. If you like getting smashed in the face just to smash them back with your shield, go prot.
If you like falling asleep at the keyboard and still finishing the quest, go ret. (Not because of boredom)
If you like to feel invincible go holy and heal the mobs to death.
My best tip to you would be to try them all out.
With appropriate gear otherwise you wont get the feel of it.

Ok, thanks a lot for the replies. I guess I will stick with retribution then. :-)
Especially, since I bought
some stuff
that's not really useful protection-specced.
