Depends on the trash in question.
Antechamber trash? Hell yes it helps, even if you arent undergeared.
Trash before the first boss in AN, it helps.
Its main use is not to make up for undergearing, but to make up for lack of experience. Archavon made it too easy to get "geared", but its no substitute for experience. If your tank is only tanking 1 mob, then CC away. If you are out TPSing your tank because they dont know how to maximise threat, CC something.

There is nothing wrong with cc. While it is true it isnt needed in a vast amount of the current content with most groups, there is nothing wrong with using it if you want to.
If your tanks gear/skill is not quite up to par in surviving damage and is susceptible to spiky damage intake (still learning how to properly manage their rotation/cooldowns can cause this) then cc'ing can be helpful, e.g. you have a pack of melee mobs and 1 caster, you can cc the caster who is likely to cause additional spike magic damage, aoe the melee mobs then dps is free to smash the casters face.
If your tanks gear/skill is causing them to not output enough threat for the dps to comfortably do their thing, CC'ing mobs or having the dps hold back/remove gear would make sense, cc is often just the easiest recourse if the tanks threat output is seriously lacking, especially if its aoe threat they arent doing so well at.
If your healers gear/skill is not quite up to par Reducing the damage to the tank/party isnt going to hurt anything, especially if they are having issues healing multiple party members. CC'ing aoe causing mobs until they can be focus fired is not a bad strategy.
If your dps gear/skill is not quite up to par...then if the tank can take the damage and the healer can heal through it cc'ing things really isnt going to do much good, then you're just making a slow run slower.
if the whole party is undergeared/still learning....go do something else, get gear from normals/rep and come back when you are ready, wiping yourselves over and over in a hero isnt getting you anywhere.

If your tank cannot tank trash, or can't take hits from trash pulls, or healer can't heal through that, than most likely you won't be able to down boss so there's no point in clearing trash anyways.Thats the thing though, most trash is HARDER then a boss when it comes to heroics. A tank could have trouble taking all the adds in, lets say CoS. However, once the boss comes that same tank might have no trouble at all taking the hits.
Another good example would be ulduar in cases trash can cause wipes if your not careful.
CC is important when the tank isn't geared enough to take in such much damage and the healer isn't able to heal so much at once. CC is in the game to be used and as such many of the trash mobs tend to be harder to take on without CCing them to prevent them from doing big group damage or large burst to the tank.

Grab a guild healer and take a few guildie alts who needs some heroics and a couple of pugs. Does it bother me that I was always top DPS (pulling 2-2.3K DPS) while the DPS was pulling 900-1400. Naw, because I out geared the instance so much, the healer got bored and started to DPS. Mind you this is back to back pulls... the only rest anyone got is if the boss had to talk or there was just that long of a run to the next pull.
I remember those days at 70, steamrolling through H ramps, SP, ub, even H Black Morass.
having a healer in half dps gear pre-spellpower change. ahh... good times. :)
and to the OP. if the healer or tank cant take the damage, or if you're wiping/dying more often than you should, its perfectly acceptable, and preferable, to use CC.

I miss the days when CC was utilized. It added an element to the encounters that I found somewhat challenging and fun.
Making sure my consecrate didn't break CC and placing mobs away from the CCed mob made my day. It also helped me weed out scrub DPS. I held on to mages that could keep a sheep up and do decent damage, and I marked on my calendar the day that I found a hunter that could chain trap!

lol, me too! i was so proud of my hunter solo-CCing Shattered halls, with his CC spec. i hardly did any damage, but we brought a dps warrior and shaman to make up for it. :)
this thread is makin me all nostalgic. :P
