I'm elemental, but when I DO heal things I use X-Perl and Clique... Clique is a great mod, and X-Perl annoys the hell out of me so I shut off every part of X-Perl except the essential menu stuff and the raid UI.
As for Clique, it's nice because you can bind any spell to a mouse click, when clicking on any unit frame. The ONLY problem this creates is if you attempt to right click, you'll cast say Healing Wave on that target... I've worked around this by going into the macro settings and setting shift+Lclick to swap to a profile that doesn't do anything except swap back...
Sounds complex, but I love it!

I've been healing for a long time, and my recommendation is, at the very least, to use Grid. Create some mouseover macros to ride shotgun with it, and healing will become so much easier. To give you an idea of where to start, I use macros that do the following:
Left click - Chain heal
Right click - Lesser healing wave
Middle click - Healing wave
Ctrl Left click - Riptide
Ctrl Right click - Earth shield
Ctrl Middle click - Nature's Swiftness + Healing wave (my emergency button)
These are all mouseover macros, so the heal/spell is applied to whoever's Grid icon I've clicked. If I'm not hovered over Grid, the clicks have their default mappings (middle click I use to refresh my own Water shield).
I also use Clique to manage my mouseover macros, mainly so that when I actually click on someone's nameplate outside of grid (like their pitbull name plate) it doesn't trigger a heal. :)
Oh and once you have Grid, to save on screen real estate, turn off all other raid frames. You don't need them.
As far as the other suggestions, Clique will work with any window frames, so if you really like the raidframes of Xperl/Pitbull/etc (puke), then don't worry about Grid. I use Grid because its extremely small, simple, and clear. At a glance you know exactly what's going on with everybody in the raid. Healbot works similarly, but is still too bloaty-looking for me. I used it for a while but find Grid to be a far superior alternative.
And for my mind,
some
sort of healing assistance addon is a must for raid heals. When healing is light its not required, but when the 's' hits the 'f' you'll lose control very quickly.
Edit: Forgot to address Decursive. Grid has this base covered too. If you have Grid, its all you essentially need.

How exactly do i do this? I just started using clique (dinged 80 2 days ago and am healing heroics) and I love it, but the only problem i have with it is that its ALWAYS on and when Im sitting in dalaran and right click on a nameplate to open a trade window, i cast riptide on the target.
Open the Clique config window, and click the Frames tab at the bottom. Untick all of the frames you don't want Clique to work with. Done. :)

Personally, i just use Grid, and that's all i think i need. Make sure to change the setting round a little bit to 'Shamanize' it, for example set the middle icon to not show Magic, because you can't dispel it and it gets in the way otherwise.

Well first of all I have to say that I am an add-on maniac (admitting is the first step :P). I use a lot of addons (love X-Perl btw), but for healing on my shammy I use Healbot. I've disabled the raid groups that X-Perl displays and I've set it:
- left click: Lesser Healing Wave
- shift + left click: Healing Wave
- right click: Riptide
- shift + right click: Chain Heal
My only problem is putting Earth Shield on the MT, because I have to find him between the mobs and other players if he's not in my party (only in raids), so I refresh ES on every occasion.
Maybe I'll find another add-on for that......
Oh, and I would say Decursive is a must.
I like this combination more than Clique because I found it easier to set-up (I got lost in Clique settings).

I use Grid, Totem Timers, and macros for all my healing spells for mouseover healing. This is extremely helpful as it allows me to target anyone i want while healing. I usually target an enemy so I know when to dispel or interrupt. I also have some macros for purging and interrupts. I try to keep everything easy and simple so I can still visually see what's going on and if I have to relocate myself.
Put Earth Shield on the tank that needs it (don't get lazy with earth shield). You'll mostly be casting Chain Heals to keep the raid alive. Let a paladin, priest, druid healer keep the tanks topped.

In a fight where you have to move around a lot (hodir), cast Riptide if you need to move and heal at the same time. That's really the only good use for riptide as it's a weak heal. It's also good for making your chain heal really strong but focus on ppl who actually need heals first.
Here's an example of my healing macro.
#showtooltip Chain Heal
/use 13
/use 14
/cast Chain Heal
If I have the mouse over a player on grid, they will be healed. Otherwise the targeted friendly player will be healed. If there's no friendly target then I heal myself. Repeat this macro for everything you'd use for raid healing (healing wave, cleanse spirit)

I use clique and x-perl. They are awesome for healing.
For clique my bindings are:
shift - left click : healing wave
shift - right : lesser
shift - middle: chain heal
ctrl - left: riptide
ctrl- right: cleanse
ctrl - mid: gift of naaru
I've set the Q key to earth shield and my E button to water shield.
