I know the min/max people hate my build idea, but I suggest this:
Full 71pt Arcane
.
That's a good place to start for a build that can solo and raid. It won't be top dps but it is fun and good enough to do well.
Everyone will say get Torment the Weak and you can take points from somewhere else for it if you want.
Modify it as you wish too and Arcane Blast and Arcane Missiles are your friends with Arcane Barrage for high mobility fights.what makes you think someone wouldn't hate your build when you're missing out on 18% arcane blast damage for not having spell impact and torment the weak?

this is an odd thread. someone saying in ulduar that student of the mind is a waste
Mana regen formula for level 80
MP5 = 5 * (0.001 + sqrt(Int) * Spirit * 0.005575)
Now, assuming you have 1000 Int and 700 spirit (which is very generous)
MP5 = 5 * (0.001 + sqrt(1000) * 700 * 0.005575)
MP5 = 617
With Student of the Mind, you'd get an extra 70 spirit, and if you plug it into the formula, your MPS becomes
MP5 = 5 * (0.001 + sqrt(1000) * 770 * 0.005575)
MP5 = 679
That's an increase of 62 MP5.
But wait, you said it increases crit too. at 70 extra spirit, you'd get about 38 crit, which works out to be around 0.8% crit chance
In summary, for 3 talent points, you get an extra 62 MP5 and 0.8% crit chance .....
So no, Student of the Mind is not worth it.

...for Arcane. It's absolutely worth it for Fireball specs. If you don't cast scorch you generally do not need flamethrowing so those two points can go somewhere that actually (though poorly) increases your damage.
See eg Parissa's spec in the sig below.
I stand corrected. :)
For an Arcane spec, points spent in Student of the Mind can generally be better spent on other talents that increase DPS by a lot more.
