ASH, I just have this to say: I have a couple of friends who have gone into physics/astrophysics as their major in college. You have to keep in mind that there is a very limited amount of job opportunities if you are a pure physics guy. Either you do another, different degree afterwards, or you stay pure physics and join the Acedemic community.
As a pure physicist, your likely professions are with a company/university working on grants given by other companies/government. It's a great experience for some, but for others, it's a little bit of a crapshoot. You're not guaranteed to have employment all the time.
Physics is a really good base though. From a degree in physics, once you know what you really like doing, you can go into another program that is more your style.
I personally have avoided medicine in my acedemic pursuits, not because I don't want to be a doctor, but because I was being pushed by my mother to be one - so I never considered it to be an option. If you like medicine but are avoiding it for the same reason as me, that's not that great. But otherwise, go with what you like doing.

You're not a child anymore, if they really care for you, they'll respect your decision no matter what. You don't have to do what they say.

I don't have to, I know. But why are they so persistent? maybe I should choose medicine, my mum reckons I will like it, she keeps saying that I will regret it if I don't :S. /sigh

Well every parent would love to have their children follow in their footsteps, I'm sure.(unless of course they led a bad life in a bad neighborhood and such, but you know what I mean.)So of course they'd be persistent when its near their grasp, but don't let what they want you to do override what you want to do.
Its your life, not their's.

Then it is what it is. We have pros and cons with every choice we make, there's *always* a chance you'll regret the choice you make. But you're guaranteed a regret with medicine, you'd regret just following into what your parents want instead of what you want, and you will never know how good you might have had it had you chosen physics.

if you're worried about making the wrong choice, go with the medicine route. Once you've made a pile of money, you can always go back to college and go into another field.
That's what my mother did, she was a computer engineer but she was unsatisfied with her job, so she ended up going back to college much later and became a clinical dietitian.

Hes stated before he'd very much dislike going through a boring 7 years of studies for a subject what isn't even his forte. The only thing that's keeping him from just going with physics is his parents, from what I can tell.
I mean, I doubt your parents would totally shut you off for doing what you like.
