Sorceress was my favourite in Diablo II. Rolled mage instantly when I got WoW.
I've tried all the classes at least up to 20. Most of the time if I'm in a bad situation I say to myself "If I was a mage right now, I could have done this..." so I keep going back to it.

I rolled a mage simply because I was tired of being a protection tank. I was a protection tank in the classic game and BC but halfway through BC I rolled a mage just for fun. I had so much fun playing him I put my protection warrior into retirement and haven't regretted it.

On a serious note, I've always been attracted to the magic wielding; I didn't particularly favor the 'evil' warlock or the 'holy' priest, so I ended up a Mage.

i liked the initial "glass cannon" description of the mage,
mages were initially "unrivalled at dealing damage from range"
things have changed a bit, but then again i dont get beat on damage meters by anyone :)

ya....
i rolled a mage cuz i wanted to see the epic boss-fights and such from afar instead of bein up in teh fray all confused.
ive seen videos of raiding from teh tanks perspective, and i gota say....
...things look way better when they're a good hundred feet away, and theres a big plated cow between you and that ungodly boss with 293845y203970572034730247230430472 hitpoints >:)
o and i was also persuaded by the laid-back "im in my jammy robes" feel even tho im killin mobs quicker'n anybody :P clothie ftw

I'm a fantasy buff, particularly magic-users, so it's a no-brainer for me. :)
