I like threads like this.
Everyone who said they'd give it back gets to feel superior because they're so noble.
Everyone who said they would keep it gets to feel superior for being honest (with the assumption that everyone else is lying)
Also, justinc gets +1 because we agree on something. :D I don't feel superior because I think they're lying. I feel superior because I know that if it happens to me and one of the "give it back" people is on the other end, I win no matter what side I'm on.

I would give it back, no doubt. It's not my money, simple as that. I would trade it back and ask if there was a "finders fee" and feel really good about the 200g he gave me for being nice and honest.
It reminds me of the old joke. A guy at a party asks a woman "Will you go to bed with me for a million dollars?". She looks in disbelief, so the guy repeats the question and after a bit of consideration, the woman agrees. "Okay, will you go to bed with me for 20 bucks?". "OF COURSE NOT! what kind of woman do you think I am?" she replies. "I already know what kind of woman you are, now we are just haggling the price"
With that in mind, I'm not a thief, no matter what amount I have the chance to steal.
(however I am a bastard, so making him do the naked teapot dance first sounds like fun)

It's not my money, simple as that. I beg to differ. My proof lies in whose bag the money is now residing in.

Wonder what a GM would say about it?
Nothing, except "Check the amount before you trade people".
If you were scammed you would have a case. I once had an item for sale and a guy whispered me. We agreed on a price of 500g. He popped open a trade window, entered 500g, I put up the item and clicked trade. He quickly changed the amount to 50g and hit trade, hoping that I would miss it and press trade again. I spotted the change and didn't click, instead saying "Dude, wtf?" and he logged off immediately. I reported him at a GM just the same.
In the OP's example, there is no "foul play". One guy decides to hand a large amount to another, no tricks involved and no scam. An open and shut case of "be more careful next time".

I'd give it back, if they noticed that is.
I once had this happen:
/2 : WTB FROZEN ORB PST
/w from : 60g
/w to : Alright, sounds like a good price.
/invite
We meet and he happens to put up 5 frozen orbs instead of 1, I put up my 60g and
PRESTO! I have 4 free Frozen Orbs=free 250g for me:D
I later found out that he joined my guild and still hadn't noticed his loss so meh.I've had people do this, giving me a full stack of infinite dust/dream shards/whatever when I enchant for them. I consider it part of the tip.

Hehe, as far as wow rules are concerned it's my money once it's in my bag, but in my mind it will never be my money. My clean conscience is worth more that gold.

Another question for you all though is
Some of you suggested that you'd only give the money back if ther person was in a respected raiding guild. Why does that make any difference?
It doesn't. Moral values shouldn't be defined by what a person stands to lose, that's weak.

This is what I think I would do: I'd keep the money and I'd pay my flying mount training. After which, I'd proceed to give the money back overtime (like a loan).
There we go, I get my flyer quicker, and you still get your gold back (eventually).
P.S: I'd love to know how Mr. Cloverfield feels now... Does he feel guilty? Does he want to give back the money? Or is he now saying to his guild: "Hey gusy (intentional mistake) some jerk just gave me 4k g roflmaoz!"

I'd mess with them for a while most likely. "Thanks for the epic flight for mah alt, brah", and so on. Or the classic "Uhh..you didn't give me 4000g man, idk what you're talking about." Then they'd receive mail an hour later containing said gold. Harmless fun? Yes please.
