I actually agree with that to a point too. Just look at how often certain people report (btw it counts all reports in the reputation leaderboards, not only the ones that are accepted).
In short, I would like to see more 'controversial' posts, more discussion of the content and more bans of problematic users.
If.
Only.

I didn't realize they tracked reports publicly- lol.

The thing is, if you (we) all agree with MyTie's point, why is it working like that? Posts don't exactly report themselves - and I'd be eager to know who it is that believes that reporting everyone they disagree with help anything but extensive group pat-on-the-back'ing. If we're going to discuss things, especially controversial and/or hot subjects, reporting posts is not the way to go about things. Unless a post is extreme, I prefer not to report things I believe is offensive - "offensive" is mostly subjective, anyway.

I think it's because everyone agrees that you should be able to discuss controversial topics, as long as you're not derailing, being abusive, or needlessly insulting. Just none of us ever think we're the ones being derailing, abusive or needlessly insulting.

Yep, they do.
Edit: In short, what I'm proposing is stronger self moderation from the users. If we can manage it, the mod staff won't feel the need to censor stuff that we tend to jump on.
I wish it would happen. Honestly, I think I manage myself better than some* other users while completely smashed*.

Now is this to say that I take issue with the way I have been personally moderated? Not really. I've taken issue with the way people have personally moderated me since skyfire.
Skyfire. I am amazed either at your memory, or your capability to hold on to grudges.
My beloved battlefield was turned into a paintball arena which was turned into a nerf arena which was turned into a dodgeball arena which was turned into a place where we all sit around and say nice stuff.
This. So much. You guys need to be more confrontational.
I still think this is all because of the name change. Randomness just gives off another vibe.

IMHO, you have 2 choices when it comes to moderation of a forum that is going to, pretty consistently, end up hitting on very personal, very controversial topics, like OT was doing for a while there.
You either heavily moderate it, which will likely result in lack of participation, constant work for the mods, and sore feelings towards them, or you let it run wild, which will devolve into chaos at some point.
I think the mods
tried
very hard to find a happy medium here, but I don't think there is a happy medium to be found in topics like religion, abortion, and homosexuality. Side A feels one way, Side B feels another, and nothing that either side can say will change anyone's opinion, so it eventually turns into a personal attack fest. Couple that with the mods actually participating in the discussions, either from their own standpoints, or playing "devil's advocate", and you end up where we did a few months ago. While I enjoyed a large part of it for a while, it ended up, as I described it in another thread, "feeling like an abusive relationship".

Magician;
The thing is I don't believe that middle is necessary on the internet. If we were moderating real life, sure, staying there is the way to go, otherwise people start killing each other.
However, on the internet we have this great medium where the
worst possible thing
that can happen from a very heated argument is someone not coming around anymore. And, honestly, if the person can't handle someone else's opinion being fervently
typed
at them, the problem doesn't lie with the forum or it's users. It clearly lies between that person's computer and their chair.

Actually, how does one become moderator around these parts of the Internetistan?
You can request it, I think. No guarantees, obviously.

I find it a funny mentality that people aren't people when they're on the internet. That it's ok to be insulting, disrespectful, harsh and say the types of things that have only the purpose of jabbing at things that are emotionally charged because they are huge parts of people lives. It begs the question are you decent to people because you don't want to be hurtful to them, or are you decent to people because you don't want anything to happen to you? I think that people who have that disconnect tend to be the second type, which ironically are the kinds of people I find it unpleasant and a waste of time to deal with in real life or on the internet.
Like those people who go an write horrible things to the families of dead children- there's just something missing in a person like that. Some part of being human that never grew in right.
