I said no in the most "I'm actually very theological and like and respect Judaism a lot... etc." way possible.

I don't understand why they have talents. You pretty much HAVE to select a certain build to be good at something, and the builds don't allow a lot of customization. I understand Holy/Prot/Ret, but why not just push a button and it automatically just gives you the abilities, and stats, that come with that build? It's like glyphs. Why not just permanantly modify the spells that everyone modifies with glyphs? Why even have them?
If they really want to make it fun, they could give fun talents to the different trees, to change the WAY the charachter is used. For instance, a DISC priest could change all of their spells to be 90% preventative. What I am saying is that all thier spells would become 'shields', instead of heals, except for 10% of each spell. Maybe they could do this at the cost of their group heal spells. Another discipline priest could make all thier spells group heals, except one or two. Another discipline priest could make all their heals heal ONLY one target for 70% more total healing... but maybe they take 30% longer to cast.
That way you drastically change the way each class can be played.
(please don't pick apart the numbers, and mechanics, as if I spent years constructing this idea and balancing formulas. I just posted this to give a general idea)
Actually, as true as this is, I like doing variations and altered specs. Those which deviate from the cookie cutter.
(You could almost say the same thing about ANY OTHER GAME that uses a similar system as well)
That would be fun, but it actually probably wouldn't work out. Actually, in most cases, it won't. It'll just make your numbers smaller. That is all. It is disappointing that talents affect number SIZE instead of number APPLICATION.

Mastery will help with this, a lot.

Mastery will help with this, a lot.
I understand mastery like this:
You put points into holy, you become a better overall healer... HUURFF DURFFF.
You put points into prot, you become a better overall tank... HUURFF DURFFF.
You put points into ret, you become a better overall dps... HUURFF DURFFF.
Why not just completely leave off the mastery system? Am I missing something? How will this make it any less cookie cutter and more fun? It will STILL be neccessary to pick certain talents over other talents to keep your numbers "big" until they COMPLETELY REDO TALENTS. Adding an idiotic band aid on top of it isn't going to fix the necessity to stick to an exact talent build with zealot obedience to make yourself even with everyone else.

The point is that he makes it so the passive bonuses that create the cookie cutter specs get rolled into a passive bonus, so they'll add more dynamic moves that will really affect your game play, as opposed to making you able to take 1 more hit before you go down. It becomes a matter of personal preference and how you like your game. There will always be a 'best spec in an ideal world,' but this allows you to make more choice to cater to your style of gaming/guild's style of gaming.
