This is a well written post. However It is currently well out of date, given the changes to feral DPS for WoTLK. Is there anyway to get an updated post. The OP did a marvelous job and I would love to see their take on ferals in WoTLK.
Edit: I saw Erona made a nice post about a WoTLK PVE rotation. Thanks.

Also remember that rake has been increased to be the most energy efficient attack for a kitty dps. Just want people to remember not to leave it out of their priority list because of pre-WOTLK numbers.

i attempted to make that cat macro, and it didn't work. All it did for me was cancel form. So i pushed it twice real quick and it returned me back to where as if my energy bar had never moved. What am I doing wrong? the macro seems simple enough.
I understand what you are trying to do but the ability to power shift to gain energy has been removed from the game do to changes to the talent Furor. That talent no longer gives you energy every time you shift it just allows you to retain any energy you have built up in the background while in the other forms. So in bear form you will still generate energy at the same rate that you would if you were in cat form but once you switch into cat form you will now have either a full bar or whatever energy you managed to generate while in bear form.
I find this extremely beneficial for allowing you to pop out of form to drop an innervate or a off heal then drop back into combat without losing any energy in the process which allows you to keep up your DPS numbers.

I've just completed collecting an alternative PVP set that is based on cat dps but I still can't figure out a good rotation or which abilities are most effective in quick fights. Obviously this is a pve forum but everybodys had their fair share of battlegrounds/arena including Nabterayl. I've got the feral talent tree down from copying one of the top kitty PVPers on my realm just need tips on what abilities to use.

There is no reason why a Cat oriented spec would leave out Master Shapeshifter. Reduced Shapeshifting Mana Cost, 4% Crit in Cat and 4% damage in Bear >>>>> 30 second shorter Bash, 1 second longer Pounce and 2 Energy off Mangle.
Take those 2 points from Brutal Impact, that 1 point from Imp Mangle and your 2 Extra Points and put them into Natural Shapeshifter/Master Shapeshifter.
For a pure PvE Cat build take those 2 points from Feral Swiftness and those 3 points in Infected Wounds and put them in Feral Aggression.

If you are reaching for a PVE kitteh dps build, start with the resto tree. Make sure you have your 16 points in it with
Furor
,
Naturalist
,
NS
,
MS
and
OoC
. These are some of the
most
important talents you can spec into given that they all do something incredibly important for you. I know for me, MS has put me over 41% crit.
With
Feral Aggression
with raid buffs I typically get ~15k Ferocious Bite crits, despite being an energy drain, I use it when Savage Roar is up and Rip hasnt worn off yet.
Brutal Impact
will NOT benefit you in PVE dps, it's nice to have if you like to switch into bear and bash for some reason and you shouldnt be using Pounce when Ravage is the superior stealth attack.
While
Infected Wounds
is a nice talent on mobs that run away, you dont really run into too many of them in raids/heroics. Though it also reduces attack speed, I cant justify spending 3 points into it for something that is more of a raid utility rather than an offensive talent. If there is another feral druid in your raid and the leader really wants the talent for a certain fight or for trash, there is no reason for both of you to have it.
King of the Jungle
is the only talent that I really would have liked to have picked up for the extra 60 energy, but an extra 60 energy every 30 seconds when you will most likely only use it during boss fights doesnt seem like a good use of points, you want to get the most out of what your points can be put into.
I never looked at any of the forums either here or MMO-Champ or even EJ before I finally decided on my raiding build and what I came away with was
0/55/16
. It has everything you really need in all the best places. Again, this is strictly PVE, but I still do plenty of Wintergrasp with this spec and do just fine.

This might possibly be the best points i've ever spent. you'll be surprised how much you will use this ability. I love this and use in on almost every pull.
From what I've seen so far, rotations for a cat are completely situational.. Shred is awesome, except in fights where you can't stay behind the mob or the group wants you stacked. Mangle is nice because it can hit from anywhere around the mob. Sure its not the most energy efficient but its a lot more functional in a lot of fights. Also a lot of what you do depends on how well your tank is generating threat. I've had both ends of that spectrum.

That said, you should be never be using
Pounce
or
Ravage
on trash.
An initial stun on a mob is bad for the tank trying to gain rage, and if you get a high crit with
Ravage
you risk drawing aggro, and last I checked it doesn't have a great dpe ratio.
While
Ravage
is an expensive attack, I havent had any problems using it and drawing aggro. If your tank is competent you shouldnt be able to pull off of him. Ill crit on
Ravage
for about 7-8k dmg, and like I said I dont pull aggro from bosses. Maybe its just me, but I really like this attack. You could be right and its not very energy efficient, but its only something you use once per fight, right at the beginning and is something you should at least try.

I think I am going to try speccing into
KotJ
, with the 2 of you giving some more info on it.
My reasoning behind saying it wasnt viable in trash pulls was due to the fact that trash doesnt seem to last long enough, currently doing only 5/10 man content and a dash of pvp here and there.

I was wondering, we got 2 kitties in our 25man Naxx. We both use mangle in our rotation, but isn't it wiser to say that one of us keeps mangle up all the time? I mean, it's kind of wasted energy if I refresh the others mangle while it still ticks for 10 sec.
And does rip, rake etc. work beside eachother? What I mean is that when I put rip up on a boss, can the other rip as well so there will be 2 rips up?
Somehow my dps and damage done is way too low. I see numbers from around 3 - 5 k dps, but I still struggle to get around 3k (if i'm lucky). I think it has to do with the 'stress' of keeping up my rotation. In HC it's not a problem at all to keep it up and my dps is almost the highest in the group, but as soon is I go 25man Naxx I somehow suck. Got to say that I've only done Patchwerk in Naxx10, so I sort of skipped Naxx10 and went 25man with my guild. And I never raided in TBC btw.
I open with mangle - rake - savage roar - tiger's fury - shred - refresh rake - 5cp rip. The problem with me is the timing I guess, to keep everything running at all times. I use BadKitty, but are there other addons for timing?
I don't think my gear is that big of an issue or is it?

That's right, 2 or more players can have Rip/Rake up on the same target without one overriding the other. We have 3 feral druids in our guild in most raids, one of the other 2 are usually a tank while the other and myself are kitteh dps and I noticed that there is often 2 of those debuffs on the target.
As for kitteh Swipe, it's a nice gesture for Blizz to throw in, I just cant do it. Im sure someone will point out how it's an awesome attack, but I don't care, this is how I feel about it. Yes, when you spec into TF attacks cost 50% less when used, but unless you are running with non AOE classes, it is by far the last thing I would use. Say you have a Paladin in your group, he is going to throw down Consecrate, a DK is going to throw down D&D, a Mage is going to use Blizzard/AE/Flamestrike and the mobs are going to be dead before you get off your 4th Swipe. Just think if you have all of those classes in your raid! You may not even get off an attack (ok, that's an exaggeration but you get what I mean). Truth is, we don't need an AOE, we do awesome single target dps and from some of the things Blizz has been saying, we might be getting a buff soon.
Again, that last part is my opinion on the matter, so if anyone else has some decent success using it, that's awesome and I congratulate you, I'll be over here shredding someones face off.
