I've been using WowHead for about a month now just as a guest/ visitor, but this topic riled me so much, I actually bothered to create an account just to throw in my two pence worth.
Seriously - what's the problem? An ad page pops up. You right click - close. It's gone. I maybe see it once or twice a day. It costs me 2 seconds of my precious day, then I forget all about it and carry on playing/ reading.
I remember the "olden days" of the internet when every damn site you went to threw 15 new windows in your face, then every time you closed one, that action triggered another 30 of them. What we have right now is nothing, so it makes me cringe when I see some people bursting a blood vessel because they have to see an ad once or twice a day.
I say: WowHead, carry on, business is business, money is money, and this is a damn good site and resource. People want it, people need it, and I really think only the most absolutely hardcore, anally retentive objectionable whiners would "stop usin teh site 4efah!" because of the microseconds distraction of seeing an ad.
Get a grip.

As annoying as I think the damn popup adds are, I know that is the ^&*! you have to deal with if you want to keep a free site running. If you put up a donate/premium user option, I will gladly pay to support the pure awesomeness that is wowhead, and get rid of the adds.
If you think its great that wowhead is free and would never dream of paying, fine - Then you just deal with the adds. I dont know how many hits you have a day but I can imagine the bandwidth/hosting/hardware costs being non-trivial.
Keep on trucking, wowhead! <3

I have to say that the damn party poke pop up is certainly not pop-under or once 24 hours. I understand where you are coming from but this add always comes up above my current browser window and always several times an hour when I'm browsing.
I haven't seen any others but this one is just infuriating. Particularly when it gets more confused than normal and opens twice when I go to a new page.
At least with pop under ones I could close them down later and they not get in the way.
If it is possible to stop the Party Poker one misbehaving it would be good.
I know it probably isn't under your control, but I would be more inclined to click on ads if some of them weren't the old fraudsters "you've got mail" or "you're the 1,000,000th customer". Those just stink of scams.
Anyhow thanks for being up front with us about what's going on.

I'll notify the ad team that the pop-unders are still coming up more than they should be.

Oh yes, wanted to ask for a "donation perk". No captcha - please! I'd pay just to get rid of the captcha, seriously.

Hehe—that one also is on the list. :)

Why don't you also notify the ad team that people are getting real sick and tired of them? I've been away from the site for a couple hours, click on the browser window to activate it - popup appears.
I close it, hit any link on the site, another popup flies into my face.
Hundreds of tech websites and more somehow manage to scrape a living without this sort of nonsense, how do they do it? I don't know, but it must be doable, obviously.
What should I do? Install noscript/adblock to get rid of it, along with all the more legitimate ads on the site? Not nice perhaps, but if I'm treated like 2nd rate goods then I'm tempted to repay in kind.
Uninstall the looter plugin and stop visiting altogether? Real tempted to do that too. I really >REALLY< don't like popups, and whatever company is serving these ads obviously don't pay too much attention to any kind of rules you set, considering they have constantly and persistently appeared a LOT more frequently than just once a day, ever since the site started spawning them. I've had about three just in the last 10-12 or so hours.

The ad guys have asked me to check in with anyone who's seeing this ad more than once a day and get some information so we can get to the source of the malfunction.
Will anyone who is seeing these ads more than once every 24 hours please post here with:
What ads they are seeing (screenshots, and URLs of the actual ad banners are ideal—see
this thread
for a rundown of how to get URL information)
What country they're located in

Argh! And here I thought that my husband and my PC were having viruses. Always wondering why Party Poker popups were occurring when we went to WoWHead. I googled this a few weeks back and got no returns on what it could be, but today, I finally came here and saw that no, our PC's are just fine. I can now step down my military scanning of our PC's several times a day. I would have appreciated it though, if there had been a clearer message on WoWhead about this. I totally understand why you're doing it though.

Simple solution, though marginally annoying, simply set IE 7's pop up blocker to High security and the site simply cannot load the pop under ad period.
Does mean however you have to press key combinations to follow links, but not the end of the world once you get used to doing it.

Bumping up this thread as it can be more interesting today, after the "warhammer" scandal ;-). This reply is just to support the cause and
ask/vote for a "pay-per-features" subscription to Wowhead
. Let us know.

I simply can't pay for this online. I'm underage and my parents wouldn't allow it for sure, it took enough to convince them to let me pay monthly for WoW.

IE 3 is clearly the future of browsing.

3) For items/spells, between the tooltip text and the Quick Fact box, you have space for an ad there. (of course it doesnt work for quests and some other stuff). That space is more or less in middle of the screen which imo is alot valuable for advertisers
I have to disagree with this idea. I dislike the idea of having adverts in between things I want to look at on a page, it's really annoying and will end up with Wowhead losing hits and income from adverts.
I think the premium accounts idea to get special perks idea is good, and having an option to donate can't do any harm at all, can it?
Having adverts on the homepage would probably work, as they would be more valuable to potential advertisers.
Oh, and one last thing: you shouldn't worry if you're not getting that much money since no one is at the moment. :(

I actually created an account just to say this-
Ads = Advertising slots on a website.
Adds = Oh sh#@, who pulled the #$@ing whelps?
So for all you people complaining about adds, l2raid ;)
