When I was leveling my 54 ret paladin through Winterspring I encountered the same level 59 mage a LOT. He easily could have killed me, but if I was at low health, he would always kill the mob. I saw a him a few more times through Outland later, but he was a nice guy who didn't gank people endlessly, but only became angry when they took his mob or killed him.

I think this depends on many factors for most people, like have you or an alt been recently ganked? When I come across Alliance and I see them struggling I'll probably kill the mob for them and then take off but I wouldn't help them more than 90% of the time. Really depends on mood or how bored people are.
Edit - I've been helped by Alliance before, I was soloing a elite mob 3-4 lvls higher than me and some Ally came back and just dropped the thing for me.

Actually just earlier today I was playing my level 34 priest.
I was killing these trolls in STV for a quest. I needed like 15 ears or so.
And I happened upon this level 35 undead priest who was killing the same mobs.
We helped each other out the whole time and communicated with
emotes and stuff. It was very nice! And then at the end when we were both done he gave me a hug and waved goodbye.
I love when that sort of thing happens. I always love to dance and wave at horde. Well nice horde anyway.

I was a low level rogue during the Zombie invasion. Once a zombie attacks you, you turn into pvp. So of course I die, run to my body, rez, and im pvp running through durotar. Didnt think much about it til a skull level dranei (i say skull cause of course i couldnt see his level) comes flying past me on a broom. He stops, I stop. He gets off his broom and stares at me, I stare at him. I get on my knees and beg him not to kill me. A blood elf on her knees....can you believe it. Well he bowed to me, blew me a kiss, and took off.

On PvE servers, it's not all that rare (though not particularly common). I know I sometimes help, such as on Monday when I (a 68 Rogue) ran into a 48 BE Paladin while I was in Felwood to get Rugged Leathers. Lots of skinnables in the area southwest of the Alliance camp (just north of where the elemental cave hang out) and I noticed him sitting down to drink after each fight. So I hung around, jumping in when the wolf/bear's experience bar went gray (after all, they weren't skinning, and I could use the corpses and had no real need for the loot), for the next 15 minutes or so, 'til they left. Got several /thanks and /bows in the process, so I assume they weren't too unhappy with the interference. :P

It depends. Sometimes I have been taunted by ally players, for example I was fishing just minding my own business trying to skill up, and a Nelf hunter got right in front of me, stood ON my bobber trying to get me to click on him. That's just childish.
It was a lot of fun during the HH event standing around SM with ally players. Several times people would /dance with each other or otherwise just have fun with it.
Other times both factions would come in flagged for PVP and the whole entry area looked like a bone pile.
Unless it's a PvP objective like Halaa or something, I'd generally rather help an ally player than just pvp because.

Sure, I've helped out allys and been helped out by them also. I've seen it more on the Isle doing dailies more so than anywhere else, especially the quest with the damn demons, because we always tend to pull more than two, lol.
But when questing, if I saw an alliance in trouble with a couple of adds, I don't mind helping to kill one or two. Now, just recently I was ganked on the Isle doing that same demon quest, because I was flagged from a bg and got ambused by a boomkin. Now, courtesy demanded retribution, and really, was it my fault he was getting beat upon by the unholy demon guy at that time? so anyway, it's nice to see good relations, but don't be afraid to hit back when it's needed.

I also play on a PVP server and i have helped alliance (as horde) when i could tell they were getting ganked or such. But, when i was leveling from 1-70 i did have a lot of people kill me. So, my idea was this. I kept a little notepad by my desk and wrote down all the names of the guilds who camped my lowbie's dead corpse. Now that i am 70, i only return the favor. ^^

I originally rolled on a PvP server.
After realizing that a level 70 will run in and take out every new player in a level 20 questing area for no honor and seemingly no reason... i became wary of my choice. As I leveled up much higher, I found myself passing lower characters in contested areas. I once passed a 17 Night elf that was running away from 3-4 elementals in Ashenvale. I stopped, killed all of them for her. She bows, smiles, and I die. Seems another Alli was also in pursuit to help her, I just got there first. Embarrassed or something, he one shots me and sits on my corpse.
I'm now on a PvE server and help those of the opposing faction whenever I'm able to.

Alliance vs Horde arguements are old. Stop whining about alliance being kids and horde being nolifers and just play instead..... both factions are needed to make a good game.
And the Horde = nolifer, alliance = kids is fake. I got 70's on both and they are not so different.
I don't see anybody saying all ally are kids or all horde are nolife.
Me personally I said I had a run in with ONE ally who behaved in a childish manner. I also play an ally toon on a different server from my main, in a guild of all-Moms. They're really great people and we voted before we started the group on whether we would roll ally or horde. Ally votes won out. None of them are childish, I can tell you right now.
I have had run-ins with Horde players who were horrid. Nasty rude and every bit as childish as any other jerk in the game. Neither faction has a corner on the market of bratty immature players.
Of COURSE both factions are needed for the game to work as intended. No one is debating that, just asking if on your server do they ever actually cooperate or is it always an all-out war?
The answer seems to be that on some servers there is cooperation, on others there isn't as much.
