ohmygosh check out this combo
Cytoshape
Chamber of Manipulation
Mirror-Mad Phantasm
Got the combo yet?
You steal an opponent's creature, turn it into a Mirror-Mad Phantasm, and then activate it's ability. It gets shuffled into your opponent's library and at the same time ceases to be Mirror-Mad Phantasm, then your opponent mills his entire library looking for a Mirror-Mad Phantasm.
Obviously, the easiest counter to this combo is for the opponent to have Mirror-Mad Phantasms of his own, but that chances of that happening in a legacy match are slim and you could always put other wincons into the deck as well. I just love the epicness of this combo :)

Same thing works with
Necrotic Ooze
to deck yourself (once you have a Mirror-Mad Phantasm in your graveyard) with a Lab Maniac apparently. When the Ooze gets shuffled in, so long as you only have one Mirror Mad in your deck (in your graveyard), no more library.
Standard legal even =) Obviously easier methods exist in Legacy (ie.
Leveler
)

Well I went and bought a standard MtG deck today. Played 2 games against somebody, and lost but oh well. It was a Green/Black deck but after the first game I changed it to a mono Green deck, thanks to a friend who gave me some green cards. It's also part of the M14 core set.
All-in-all I enjoyed it very much so. I like the strategy it has, and there seem to be quite a few people that play it in my area. They had a FNM tournament and there were 18 people signed up for it.
Figured this thread could use some love as the RB might be week in the knees after the recent debate.

I've been playing a lot of Pauper lately on MTGO. It's refreshing to be able to make semi-competitive decks for under 10 bucks. Unfortunately the metagame is currently dominated by a blue control deck that I don't like.

I like my green deck so far, but I'm looking forward to building other decks and learning them. I played my friend who had a Morph deck, if that is what it was called.
I would try the online game, but my internet sucks so I went ahead and bought a deck at the store to play with. I think I got the basics down so far, except for some things I forget like the summoning sickness. But I'm itching to play some more lol.
It's also nice to meet actual people, since all I've done lately is stay at home and go to work.

I dislike the competitive MTG community where I live, and while I do have friends who play, I just really like the convenience of being able to play whenever I want with 1000s of other people in a practically stressless environment. I also haven't played Standard in a while, and that's really the only constructed format anyone does around here. I much prefer drafting and formats like Pauper.

From what the owners of the shop told me, this area up here is really nice. And most, if not all, players will be willing to help, Even one of the owners holds a MtG class on Thursdays, which I plan on attending next week. They also said that the area south of us isn't as great because the community much rather play to win and not have fun.
After looking up what drafting and Pauper is, they both seem like interesting formats. Next time I go to the shop I'll ask if they do anything like that. Seems like an interesting way to play.

I play exclusively Sealed Leagues (besides just screwing around with friends). They're far more fun, imo. There's more of an element of chance and you won't run into a ton of decks that are completely tricked out.
So far, though, I've really enjoyed the Return to Ravnica set. I've set up an Azorius deck, a Boros one (my current favorite. The commons hit like a truck and the rares back them up like a charm), a Dimir one (my first deck I really played after losing interest for awhile) and a Red/Black madness deck.
And I finally set up my White/Green Phyrexian deck. Infect is MEAN. Phytoburst was made for infect, imo.

Most card shops that have a MTG scene hold drafts. Pauper is more of a longshot.

Ahh, sounds good then. Guess next time I go in I'll have a few questions to ask about the different formats they have.
Kinda wish I got into MtG earlier

It's sorcery speed though. In my opinion an instant like Groundswell, Might of Old Krosa, Titanic Growth, Vines of Vastwood, Ferocious Charge, Might of Oaks, Stonewood Invocation or Invigorate (that last one is tailor made of infect shenanigans) would give you more much more flexibility. I would almost definitely play every single one of those over Phytoburst, with a special eye on Groundswell, Vines of Vastwood, Might of Old Krosa, and Invigorate.

Don't get me wrong, I use most of those (Titanic Growth especially). Phytobust gives a straight up +5/+5 though. Even if they know you're going to be attacking, it's +5/+5 for 2 mana.
Though my two favorites are Rancor and Unflinching Courage.

Magic: the Gathering died when 6th Edition came out. 8th Edition was the funeral. Sets from "Magic 2010" onward have been like watching the corpse rot. If you want to play
real
Magic, go buy a box of Fourth Edition starters on eBay, make a red/green deck and a blue/black deck, and hand one deck to a friend.
Whenever I hear WoW players complain about Cataclysm, I'm like "I disagree, but I know exactly how you feel".
The Minecraft equivalent was the Adventure Update.

Elitest mode: ACTIVATE!
No seriously, why? Because the playstyle you enjoyed died?

Yup MtG is so dead, just like WoW is. Look at all the people "not" playing it throughout the country/world.
OT: After doing some reading, it seems like I want to make a deck of all kinds lol. Maybe a G/W or a G/U deck at some point. Once I learn which cards work well together I'll experiment more. The deck I bought was mainly a green deck but it had a few Black cards thrown in. After playing it some guys at the store suggested going Mono green instead of G/B.
Wish I had gotten into the game sooner. I would have loved to make all kinds of decks.

G/U is generally bad unless you're running a Simic deck. They just don't synergize very well.
For a hint on which colors work well together, look at the back of a card. The colors are arranged that way for a reason. Each color has two next to it, which are it's "allied" colors. These colors tend to work well together, both mechanically and philosophically. For example, white is "allied" with Green and Blue. White/Green tends to build very large creatures with vigilance, lots of defense, etc. Things that build up your army while controlling theirs.
White/Blue, on the other hand, tends to focus more on controlling the field (e.g. counters, Riot Control, things of the sort). They try to keep your opponent down so your more defense oriented creatures can destroy them, while stopping them from destroying you.
Then there are "enemy" colors, the two which are not next to the color. There's White/Red. Red focuses on dealing lots of damage really quickly and forsaking offense completely, while White focuses on defending yourself and whittling them down.
White/Black. Black sacrifices creatures and life to get what you need, now. White, on the other hand, gives you life and builds you creatures.
Now I'm not saying that there aren't viable, non-constructed decks with enemy colors, because there are. However, if you really want to build an enemy colors deck, it's easiest to purchase one of the Return to Ravnica guild decks and expand it from there. They have specialized keywords to make them work well together.
For example, there's my White/Red deck. It's built around a keyword called Battalion, where if two or more creatures attack
along with
the creature with Battalion, special things happen. To make a quick example, I have my Wojek Halberdiers. WR for a 2/3 that, if it attacks with two other creatures, gains first strike. Frontline Medic. 2W for a 3/3 that, when it attacks with two other creatures, ALL my creatures are indestructible that turn.
Additionally, it has cards like Smite, which destroy a creature that is being blocked (great for hosing large creatures, especially ones with trample) and Aurelia's Fury, XRW that does X damage, divided how I please among players and creatures. Creatures dealt damage are tapped and players dealt damage can't cast noncreature spells that turn.
These cards synergize in that they focus on attacking, but working with each other to pump my attacking creatures and gibe me life (Firemane Avenger, which battalions for 3 damage to target creature or player and I gain 3 life).
They also work well together philosophically, as the Boros Legion is absolutely dedicated to the concept of Justice, unfettered by Law (as dictated by the Azorius Senate, which is White/Blue). They represent two sides of the same coin. Azorius is Order and Law, emphasized by their White/Blue pairing, indicating Order through Law (White) and the Serenity (Blue) to use it.
On the other hand, Boros, White/Red, shows Order through Justice (White) and the Passion (Red) to carry out their version of Justice.
Wow, that turned into a rambling freakin' lecture. Whoops.

I would add a caveat to Benzene's post. That's a fine analysis of the current block's flavor and casual possibilities, but if you're playing competitive, you'll most likely be looking for a 3- to 4-color deck in the current environment. And competitive decks rarely follow flavor trends like "simic" or "batalion". For instance here's a
Green/Blue splash-Red
deck that got 18 points at Pro Tour Gatecrash which doesn't really go the simic route at all.
And that's just Standard. If you're playing an extended format, your deck archetype possibilities are endless. And in draft, it gets even wonkier.
