One last time:
Patron of the Wild

When using burn spells that can target either a creature or a player you will almost always prioritize killing creatures in the early and mid-game, and only ever use them to hit the player in two cases: endgame when you it'll help you finish off your opponent a turn early, or when there is some sort of synergy with some other card that makes targeting the other player a better option. Specifically for this game, that burst lightening you cast should have taken out my Ghoul.
Patron of the Wild's ability is a little tricky. In mtg, the choice of words for cards' abilities is very important. "When Patron of the Wild is turned face up" if referring to its morph ability. Playing the card as a one-drop (1 green mana) just summons the creature like any other, there is no turning face up. It's using its morph ability (paying 3 to cast it face down as a 2/2 creature, and then paying 2 and a green to turn it face up that triggers its ability. So remember, if any card seems worded weirdly, it's probably for a reason.
Good game. Green/Red is a tricky combination because burn spells don't directly help creature spells and vice versa, but with the right cards it can definitely be good.

Thanks, Jubilee! It was a great learning experience and a lot of fun.

Have any of you tried the various options to play online (ones that don't require purchase or membership)?
I found a website that listed them
... OCTGN, Apprentice, and MagicWorkshop all looked like decent options -- maybe we could all play some games against each other in a slightly less 'clunky' format than forum games. I used Apprentice back in '96 but it was rather difficult to connect to each other (required knowledge of IP address and possibly port forwarding); maybe its changed now. This website makes OCTGN and MagicWorkshop sound better though -- let me know if anyone has any experience with any of them.
(Though I will say, I really like reading these games you two have been playing, both as they happen and after the fact; so maybe this forum format isn't all bad... like mail chess.)

WHAT DOES MONO MEAN!
everyone says mono--color

That means the deck is only that color.

WHAT DOES MONO MEAN!
everyone says mono--color
Just a fancy way to say "the only color in my deck is green (and some colorless stuff, like artifacts and land), I don't use any white/black/red/blue cards in this deck." Maybe it would be more proper to say "Mono-color green" but that's a bit wordy, and mono-green does the job.

One of my geeky magic friends showed me octgn, I think, or it might have been magic workstation. Both those names sound familiar. He wanted me to try it out, but I remember it being complicated to set up so I never did.

I use Magic Online, which is definitely the best, but you have to buy cards. I've never used any of the others except Apprentice. Do they even keep that updated with the new cards?
I think the card libraries for all three are user-created, so I'm not sure. I'm also relatively sure they have no rules functionality like MTGO does, I think they just give you a medium to build decks and play exactly like you would at a tabletop (where the players are the rules judges). I'll check them out if I get some time this weekend, if no one else has.

Yeah, so been trying to setup OCTGN and get it working the way I think it should and it's not happening. I couldn't get all the sets downloaded because support for those is non-existent and the program freaked out every time I tried to do something.
I just finished downloading and setting it up and it's working perfectly for me. I was going to try magic workstation too, but apparently that's shareware, and I don't want to have to pay for it.
The sets seem to be quite actively supported here,

. They even have a temporary Innistrad set up.

I found this page with links for OCTGN sets:

I couldn't even get all the sets downloaded from that site you linked. That's actually where I was getting them from already. Also, program was still screwing up.
Did you do all these steps?
Download octgn
Download the mtg game file
Download the mtg token file
Download any number of the set files
Stick all files in a permanent directory
Run octgn
Add mtg game file
Add set and token files under mtg
That's what I did and I did not have any problems. I'm even playing an "online" game right now by myself =P
