Retiring Artifact Weapons Cutscene (Spoilers)

A better ending for it than I thought they were going to have, but since day 1 I've had the question of how they're going to explain us losing the weapons in a future xpac. You can't just say "Here are some of the most powerful weapons ever created" and then turn around and say "But here are some weapons that are more powerful, you can just toss those others in the trash". As much as it would pain me, a better ending would be the weapons turning to dust at the end of this cutscene.
Presumably this cutscene will air sometime during 7.3.5. Probably at the culmination of a quest line in Silithis. So to actually destroy the weapons now would be premature. We need them through the end of the expansion, after all. Rather, I expect when we begin the intro to BfA questline, upon the expansion's release, something will happen that will deal the final blow to the weapons, rendering them useless. This cutscene sets up for that well.
I’m pretty sure the dev talk about them was just that they’d be powered down. In any case, there’s no need for them to be destroyed. The ap we’ve been building in them this entire expansion was exclusively for defeating the legion.
This way:
1. They’re now basically powerless in lore, so we don’t have to think of them as a cliffhanger anymore.
2. We can still have them equipped and used outside of lore until next expansion hits and we start collecting weapons again.
If they just destroyed them in 7.3.5, they would need to replace them with other weapons. The artifact trees would be gone since we wouldn’t have them equipped, so they would either need to implement the skill changes immediately mixing the base trees and artifact trees or hack another system to still use our artifact trees without them equipped until 8.0. Also, we worked hard on them and they would be out of our inventory forever. I’d rather keep mine in my bank.

Titanstrike; I never liked you. Being forced to wield an ugly plastic gun with the soul of the world's derpiest wolf inside.
Even so. part of me is sad to let you both go.
Even if I did have you & that wolf mogged pretty much the entire expansion.
Hopefully Blizz will realise that a loud firearm isn't what someone working with animals should be using.....regardless of what the original cinematic showed, & let us mog into the MM bow in BfA.

in some of the earlier data mined text the AP we have been using up to power the weapons is depleted when we do the cut scene. so they have no power left in them
Which they can't do because all of legion's content is designed with artifacts in mind.
You vastly misunderstood what he meant. It "says" the power is depleted, not that your artifact suddenly has no AP anymore. Reading comprehension is hard right? Nothing actually happens to or will happen to the artifact in your bag. But as far as the story goes(or would have went in this case) the weapon is now depleted of it's power in lore. But that was old info and who knows how much of it is still legit.

So if we're not healing the area and we're not sealing off the sword... we're just corrupting 33 very powerful weapons, and what? Magni is all that's gonna stop anyone taking them? Seems pretty legit.
inb4 a raid made up of bosses throwing our own weapons at us

It wouldn't make sense to remove artifacts now because people will just skip the Silithus stuff and go right into BfA in the future. They have to remove them at the beginning of BfA during the quests you can't skip over.

So they do not get destroyed. I wonder how are they explaining the fact that they won't be useful anymore if they still exist.
What happens is your Artifact Weapon is reset to AK1 AP1 after that cut scene, your hero throws it on the ground in disgust and says "I'm not doing all of that all over again!" Then they pickup a green weapon from a local vendor and move on with their lives.

I'm assuming the corruption destroyed their power

The artifact weapon wont be removed from the game.. and by time BFA is release first (Prob Green item) weapon you get in BFA will replace it..
The Artifact is needed for legion since there are no other weapon in legion to actually replace it for lvling or doing those content..
My Theory is we lose all the AK/AP we put into it and weapon becomes a standered ilvl (prob whatever ilvl you had it at) and relics will be removed .. Basicly making it a normal weapon you get from a raid just without the other crap with it..

They will probably be turned into a lesser Epic version with an Ilvl of 1000 or something still making it the best weapon in "legion"

Do we at the very least get to keep all the appearances we unlocked on our weapons for transmog? Losing the unholy mage tower appearance would be a real let down

YEs all the Unlock Appearances you have will be Transmog items.. so its best to complete everything you can for it

I guess you basically used all their stored power and now they cant be infused with another AP again. Who knows :)
This is my guess, too. They'd be left out with just the skills, not the AP, probably they'd also baseline them for everyone? Like... 75 traits top?

I believe the reason we can’t use them is because they are overloaded with corruptive energy.

This is exactly how I felt when I was a kid, watching the ending of
The Empire Strikes Back
for the first time. "What? That's it? It just stops right there?"

I don't mind so much losing the ACTUAL weapons so long as transmog remains an option. Has this been confirmed?

In my mind this is not and ending to our wepaons, more an ending of the power we collected during our trials in the broken shore. I think Battle will have us power them up this time with the neckless and have a new way. It makes no sense to me to destroy our weapons when the whole point of these weapons was to replace the normal gind for weapons. Tanks especially hate the grind for a good shield and Sword, but we will have to wait and see.

Where you get all those things? :-/
I was on PTR and can just kill few goblins, explode few robots and talk to Magni. :-/

Hopefully, Blizzard does lots of work on that cut screen before releasing it! So happy Legion finally is ending and we get rid of those artifact weapons that feel so strange when you see that every other member of your class/specs got the same weapon really sucks for RP!
