Today Norton flagged and quarantined wowhead_client.exe for Trojan.Gen.8 and called it a Heuristic Virus.
I've already reached out to Norton to have this false positive corrected. They say the turn around time can be 10-14 working days. In the meantime, you can visit your program settings to add it to the safe/white list.
Edit:
Norton says this should be fixed in 24 hours if you have LiveUpdate enabled (or you'll need to do an update manually after 24 hours).(##RESPBREAK##)2##DELIM##Sas148##DELIM##

Today, made no system changes, but client shortcut was not on desktop. Looked for in programs and it is just totally gone. I've run this thing for years and it just dumped me. Anything weird going on at your end ?(##RESPBREAK##)2##DELIM##Sas148##DELIM##Do you have Norton? If so it probably removed it. Norton says that should be fixed in the next day or so. You will likely need to redownload it after they fix their end first.

I have used the Wowhead client for years. Two days ago my computer remove the whole program from my computer. When I went to download it again, my anti-virus blocked and removed that. It showed there was a trojan inbedded in it. Is this a known issue or any workaround for this?
This sight will be obsolete if I can no longer access the info I need other than reading.
I read all the comments here and I do have Norton. I ran a live update, rebooted the computer, and still have the same issue with the trojan. I don't know what a "white list" is or how to do what is suggested. Help?

PsydeSho, I'll have to see about trying to contact Norton again about this on Monday. This isn't something we did or have any control of, unfortunately...
As far as adding it manually to Norton's "safe or white list" I'd recommend a Google search, I'm sure there's probably a tutorial that will be useful for you. I don't personally have Norton to be able to provide you assistance with it directly. They also have a support area where you can Live Chat with an agent who may be able to assist.
Norton's reply is quoted below from February 6, 2017:
Upon further analysis and investigation we have verified your submission and, as such, the detection(s) for the following file(s) will be removed from our products:
File name: Wowhead_Client.exe
MD5: a1bf7485f5522b5a055f7672d8797cdb
SHA256: 1c296142d9ee05657820bb3aee0d21f34771ec4683cc28c44114cd66fdf14e98
Note: Whitelisting may take up to 24 hours to take effect via Live Update(##RESPBREAK##)2##DELIM##Sas148##DELIM##

So I was finally able to download the wowhead client, which seem to indicate that the Norton issue has been resolved.
BUT when I go to install it, the Wowhead client displays a dialog box that says "An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by...." with the rest of the message being truncated by the size of the dialog box. And then windows shows a message that the Wowhead client and addon have stopped working that that windows will close the program.
Is this still somehow related to the Norton situation or is this a new/different problem?

Hi Gordon,
I've never heard of this particular issue. Keep in mind the Client never actually "installs" anything. It's just an .exe. Try having it 'Run as Administrator' and see if that resolves the problem at all. If not, feel free to send me some screenshots of the issue to . Thank you!

Thank you for the reply, Sas148. I tried to add it manually, but the issue isn't downloading from your site. So my Norton rightly accepts it. And there is no way to add an already allowed program.
It's when I click on the icon in the downloaded zip file. It starts and "updates" then closes with the "removed because of Trojan".
I did notice a different file path name in the zip file and the file inside when I looked in my Norton list..
Allowed file: wowhead_client.exe
Removed file: Wowhead_Client.exe
Thank you.

I believe Wowhead Looter is causing my game to crash.
For the last two weeks, I've been having an Error 132 in WoW when switching servers, where the game crashes on the loading screen when loading into a character on a different server than the one I had just been playing on. This may have been going on for some time, but I only experienced it because of the Love is in the Air holiday dungeon and running the dungeon on all my forgotten and neglected lowbie toons on servers I haven't played on in years. I have 6 servers with toons and each time I switched, I would get Error 132 and have to crash out and reopen the game.
Following the recommendations from Blizzard on how to solve the problem and eliminate potential causes (update drivers, defrag, reset UI, etc.), I've determined the most likely cause is the Wowhead Looter addon.
I determined this by doing every other step first and resetting my UI last so i could pinpoint potential addon problems. After resetting my UI and immediately opening the game, I experienced no crashes. Then I reinstalled several essential addons including Wowhead Looter, and the crashes returned. Reset UI again, crashes stopped. Then I added JUST Wowhead Looter back in and nothing else and the crashes returned.
Sadly, until there is a fix for this, I have to remove it from my game. I will continue testing with other addons to see if any others are ALSO causing it, but it seems pretty clear the looter addon is just not agreeing with my system.
Edit: I doubt that the problem is that the looter addon wasn't updated. I have the addon set to start with Windows and I restart every day so it checks for updates every day. Also, when I readded it both times, it updated itself again.

I also had a crash issue when I would switch realms. But since my anti-virus removed wowhead looter from my computer, I no longer have this issue.
So it seems that Wowhead CAN'T fix their problems.
I even contacted my anti-virus tech support, Norton, and they say it's not on their end or their program.
So what will Wowhead do now? Hmmmmm?

PsydeSho,
As I stated via email, I've contacted Norton 3x about this and they say they have removed the program from their flag list. If you're still having it removed by Norton I'm unsure how they can claim it's our issue... we have no control over Norton. I honestly have nothing more I can do to help prevent Norton from removing the program improperly. Other users have had the issue resolved since my contacting Norton. The only thing I can think to suggest is that you triple check that your Norton security software is completely up to date... including the definition list involved.

Not sure what is happening, but the Wowhead client keeps closing on its own after various periods of time. Sometimes it closes multiple times in a day and other times it will run for a few days before it closes.
I'm not seeing any error messages or indications of when it closes. Would like to solve this problem so I don't have to restart the client all the time.
Thanks for any info provided.

Hi Sas148,
In the process of making some screen grabs on this "attempt to access a socket in a way forbidden by" issue, I managed to figure out what was happening and how to fix it.
In short, it was Norton still doing things automatically with respect to the wowhead client.
In addition to falsely identifying the wowhead.client as a heuristically identified trojan (which I was able to override and restore the file within Norton), Norton was also automatically creating a firewall rule to block the client's access once the client was running, effectively keeping the client from working/causing it to crash.
I made a series of screen grab images of the original error dialog box (1st and 2nd image) and a windows popup notification that was from Norton (3rd image), along with going into the Norton security history (4th image) and seeing the creation of the firewall rule to block the wowhead client, which I changed from "Block" to "Allow" the client to access (5th image) .

This may be something others are having problems with, so I posted it here in the feedback thread so other folks can see it and try to see if it fixes their issues, too.

Appreciate you providing this info. So evidently Norton is interfering in more than one way when blocking the client. I'll try contacting them again about this. Hopefully the info/screenshots you provided will be of use to others if they're still having issues (though Norton keeps ensuring me that it shouldn't be happening anymore).

When I attempt to download the client, it's named "$" and asks for an app needed to open the file. I'm using Windows 10.

This is due to an adblocker. It's stripping the file name/type. The file is intact though. You can rename it to
wowhead_client.zip
and it will function as expected. You can test this by disabling your adblocker and downloading again, you can re-enable it again afterwords if you wish.(##RESPBREAK##)2##DELIM##Sas148##DELIM##

I just started getting "Invalid status code: 500." tonight. Been using the client for years, and for months since wiping my hard drive and installing everything afresh. Never had this before.
I tried reentering my username and pword as recommended in some older threads on the error, but didn't help.
